Commercial Description:
Gold Medal Winner, Great American Beer Festival (Ales: Brown, Bitter and Pale 1987, Barleywine 1988,1992,1995). Sierra Nevada Bigfoot is an award winning example of the English Barley Wine style. It boasts a dense, fruity bouquet; an extremely rich, intense, bittersweet palate; and a deep, reddish-brown color. This ale is superbly balanced between an almost overpowering maltiness and a wonderfully bittersweet hoppiness.

’06 Version. I had an ’05 last night. Is this really the same beer? Aroma was DIPA hoppy. Not much of a maly smell, at all. Rocky, light-brown head, excellent lacing, and the head lasted a long time. Moderately sweet early and long. Really does taste/smell more like a DIPA than "classic" barleywines". Body was light to medium. Really can’t taste the alcohol. This has made me re-think whether I want to age an entire case for future consumption. Hmmmmmmm I think I’ll review after 6 months and see what happens.

2005 Bottling. Not as hoppy as I remember last year. Don’t get me wrong, stilll very assertive bitterness and hop character. I just remember last years vintage being the hoppiest thing I ever tasted. Bittersweet flavor with great pine/cascade aroma. VERY drinkable, this vintage is deceptively smooth.

BF 2005 pours cloudy amber with nice head. aroma of sweet barley with hint of caramel. Nice fruity palate with a little hoppy finish. This is a nice classic barley wine that ages well and has a great balance.

Excellent barleywine. Pours a beautiful dark mahogany, with a creamy head. Rich, intense, and satisfying, with a solid hop kick to balance out the deep maltiness. The hops are just a bit too aggressive, but sink back in the mix as it warms, and I expect this aspect would improve with aging. After a few swallows I liked it, by halfway through I loved it. This is another one where I wish I had the discipline to hold on to a couple of bottles to cellar, but it was so good I couldn’t help myself.

2004 bottle. Pours a hazy dark amber with a big fluffy light reddish-tan head. Lacy head. Smell of very hoppy. Surprisingly so. Very floral with some underlying bitterness. Taste is big maltiness (of course) but quickly the hoppy bitterness muscles in there. Floral and fruity hops flavors. As it warms, there is more underlying caramel and alcohol flavors present, especially in the finish. Bitter hops finish and a sticky, malty and bitter floral aftertaste. A bit of alcohol burn lingers. Much hoppier than I remembered but I haven’t had this since 1997 or so. Very smooth, good sippin’ brew. Nice!

[bottle] Deep red, almost maroon color- excellent, fluffy head. Aroma is slighty sweet- somewhat bitter.. Hops are long lasting and in your face! Excellent aroma and flavors. This is an excellent, complex brew. [1995 Vintage] Holds up extremely well, with strong caramel coming through. An interesting maple flavor shows in the finish. Outstanding.

My first rating of a perrenial favorite. I have had this many times over the years and it is a consistent favorite. I have had samples fresh, as well as aged for a variety of years. This is the 2005 version and it pours a deep crimson with a sizeable head that fades quickly leaving nice lacing around the rim. The aroma is fruity and strongly hoppy. The warmth and alcohol are noticeable in the aroma as well. The flavor is hoppy upfront and full and thick on the palatte. The finish is long and bitter, almost balancing the almost cloying sweetness and masking a rich malty fruityness. Excellent and it will be fun to see how this one ages- I bought extra.

rerate (2006 version). Wow, I killed this when I had it really early in my "drinking career" (lol), but man this is good stuff! Big deep orange pour with amazing head and lacing (esp considering abv). Strong caramel and hop aroma. Flavor is strong caramel, strong pine and grapefruit. A tad too sweet when colder, but at proper temperature this is just big flavor in all aspects. Really smooth mouthfeel. Very good!
