Gold Medal Winner, Great American Beer Festival (Ales: Brown, Bitter and Pale 1987, Barleywine 1988,1992,1995). Sierra Nevada Bigfoot is an award winning example of the English Barley Wine style. It boasts a dense, fruity bouquet; an extremely rich, intense, bittersweet palate; and a deep, reddish-brown color. This ale is superbly balanced between an almost overpowering maltiness and a wonderfully bittersweet hoppiness.

Had a 12oz bottle from 1998 thanks to Sam and Marlene at the Stuffed Sandwich. Then followed it up with A 2000 bottle. Both were amazing but preferred the ’00 bottle more because it still was very hoppy as well as insanely complex. poured a hazy bronze, smelled of ripe fruits and tobacco. mellow but stll retained its carbonation and formed a nice creamy head. tasted like a dream. one of my milestones so far in my beer tasting career.

UPDATED: MAY 1, 2016 2016/04/30 - Pours a hazy, ruby brown colour with a soapy, cream colour head that quickly reduces to a patchy film and leaves ample lacing. Aroma is caramel, dark fruits (raisin, prune, grape), mild yeast, floral notes and spicy/earthy hops. Taste is dark fruit, caramel, sweet bread, light alcohol and spicy (slightly herbal) hops. Mouthfeel is medium with sharp carbonation and a drying, bitter, slightly warming finish. Malt forward with some nice hop character. Very nice, but I expected better given the hype. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Vintage 2014 Deep red to light brown colour on the body, quite hazy, with a good sized and thick light beige head on top, very good retrention. Taste is sweet with lots of red and dark fruits, alcohol, malts, nice hoppy touches, orange peel, nocely bitter on the finish. Medium body with good carbonation, quite dry on the palate. Very nice, heavily hopped barleywine.

Bottle into snifter. Pours a hazy reddish brown with a thin off white cap. Aroma is fruity with a little booze. Taste is about the same. Great beer would like to see how it ages.

12oz bottle. 12/4/15 bottle date. Appearance: Reddish brown in color, slight haze, and a beige khaki foam head. Aroma: Rich maltiness of bread crusts and toffee. Light citrusy hop aromas as well. Taste: Deep, rich maltiness. Bready and caramel up front, giving way to more of a toasty and toffee flavor. Sharp, strong bitterness hits on the back end with citrus and pine. Overall flavors are very fresh and sharp. Mouthfeel: Medium heavy body with some chewiness, with a light carbonation. Strong alcohol heat. Finish: Sharp flavor of the beer lasts long past the swallow. Malt forward for sure, with some caramel and toast, as well as a strong resinous bitterness. Overall: The label is absolutely right, this is a beast of a beer. Strong, rich, boozy maltiness from the start with multiple layers of caramel, bread, toast, and toffee. Citric hop bitterness is very strong and does a good job of standing up to the malt. This beer is 4 months old, and the intensity is very high, almost overpowering. Looking forward to trying another Bigfoot at 1 year and seeing how it softens and develops different flavors

Bottle shared at the end of a long session. 2016 version. Feels quite young and boozy, syrupy body, dried fruit and caramel malt, quite sweet on the finish. Not very exciting, will probably revisit older versions when more sober :)

355ml bottle. (Vintage 2016) Pours a hazy deep red-brown with a medium, creamy, long lasting, tan head that laces. Sweet aroma of caramel malt, dark fruit, alcohol and piney hops. Sweet flavour of dark fruit, caramel malt, grass, pine needles and burning alcohol with a dry, bitter, hoppy finish. Medium body with a smooth, oily texture and soft carbonation. Pretty interesting, a hybrid between an ipa and a barley wine.

2012 Vintage on tap. It’s interesting how little this beer has mellowed with close to 4 years of age. The flavor profile is similar to how it was fresh -- malty and syrupy, but balanced by a ton of hop bitterness. I still think it’s way too bitter for the style, but that’s personal taste. Fun to try something with this amount of age on it.

BOD 12/4/15. Beautiful clear rich dark ruby pour. World class head volume, lacing and uber world class retention. Outstanding nose of fruit (plum, raisin, grape), caramel and light citrus hops over a subtle spruce spiciness. As it warms, notes of alcohol emerge. Light medium body with a smooth texture. Below normal carbonation with very little effervescence even in the finish. The flavor profile is outstanding with balance being the strongest suit. The flavors are rich and deep beginning with bitterness that flows into a nice caramel sweet middle. As the sweetness fades, fruit flavors emerge but don’t separate very much. The finish is reasonably astringent as the alcohol becomes uncovered but never becomes dry. A mild pine centered bitterness lingers.

Pours up a reddish amber color with a moderate tan head. Aroma is grapes, dried fruits, and hops. Taste is sticky, with wine, some toffee, caramel, a bittersweet mixture. Some cough syrup and some organic wood as well. Some what bitter finish with a healthy booze burn. A big barley wine, very hoppy though, it reminds me of a mix between an IPA and a barley wine.

2016 bottle. This guy is a beast! Nuts, bread, hops, bourbon aroma. Nicely hoppy low to mid carbonation. Slightly syrupy, but the dry hops balance perfectly. Fantastic. Far more bitter than the sweeter barleywines Ive had before and I like that a lot.
