Gold Medal Winner, Great American Beer Festival (Ales: Brown, Bitter and Pale 1987, Barleywine 1988,1992,1995). Sierra Nevada Bigfoot is an award winning example of the English Barley Wine style. It boasts a dense, fruity bouquet; an extremely rich, intense, bittersweet palate; and a deep, reddish-brown color. This ale is superbly balanced between an almost overpowering maltiness and a wonderfully bittersweet hoppiness.

Vintage 2009. Great aroma, love that the hops can be found here. Nice head and color, somewhat dark copper. Very balanced for a barleywine, perfect amount of hops to counterbalance the maltyness. Definitely better than the Duck Rabbit barleywine. Aging my 2nd one for a bit as Iím sure it can be even better!

2015 bottle. Pours a reddish amber with some brown ale tones. Smells sweet and hoppy. More hoppy than most barleywines. Get tastes of caramel, brown sugar, grapefruit, and resin. Some pine as well. The hops add that signature Sierra flavor and make this stand out among other barleywines.

12 oz bottle into glass. Sticky sweet nose. Bronze translucent with scum head. Tobacco dark malt taste with stinging nettle sharp bitterness at the finish. Serious sipping beer.

Gorgeous reddish brown colour with a decent head for a barleywine. Very hoppy aroma for the style too - lots of resin, pine and caramel. The taste is really rich and flavoursome with a heap of resinous, piney and lightly citrus hops on top of the caramel malt base. Only a hint of butterscotch. Full bodied but strangely drinkable. Lightly prickly carbonation. Really good barleywine.

The Sierra Nevada Bigfoot unleashes a fruity bouquet that grabs you as soon as you open the bottle. Pours beautifully, with a rich amber palette and mild head, enticing the drinker to indulge. The first sip is a flavour explosion, with deeply entrenched hops and fruit at war within your glass, fighting a pitched battle for your attention. The potency of the flavours perfectly masks the strength of this barley wine, resulting in a deeply satisfying ale that lends itself to lazy afternoons and slow consumption. Brilliant. Frangimus

a great, extra hoppy barleywine style ale; reddish brown color; semi sweet caramel malt background with lots of citrusy, floral hops - almost a cross between an barleywine and an Imperial IPA;

Pours a hazy amber with a purple tinge. Beige head. Sweet dark fruit aroma with the signature piney hop character the Sierra Nevada delivers. Huge dark fruit character on the front of the tongue. Malty sweet, but enough of a resin and citrus hop presence to make this drinkable. Caramel malts are distinctive. Highish carbonation for a barleywine but this increases the drinkability. Very complex, but delicious

2014 edition. Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a tulip on 04.10.14. A: 3 finger head. Cloudy opaque purple/red. S: Pine, grapefruit. There is more that I canít pick out easily. Very strong and complex. T: Pine, malt, raisins dominate. Caramel is there too. M: Creamy smooth. Oily. O: This was my first barleywine and it was a confusing experience. It was like an APA or an IPA mixed with prune juice. It was bitter first, then a raisin sweetness took over with a bitter finish. There was some alcohol burn too. This one needs to be sipped for sure. Iíd like to age some of this since itís so cheap and see how it changes.

2012 bottle (date on cap & label) served in a pint glass. [from nots]. A. Dark reddish-amber with 1+ finger of bone-colored head. The head is markedly thick, has great retention and leaves plentiful sticky lacing. Thereís a very slight haze, but both coarse and fine carbonation bubbles can be seen rising from the bottom of the glass. No room for improvement here. S: The first thing to strike me was the clear hop aroma, with a mixed of resin (primary) and citrus (secondary). This is no IPA, however, and thereís a solid, sweet malt base, and hints of brandy and dark fruits. High ABV becomes increasingly evident with warming, but still mixes nicely with the other aromatics. T: Caramel malt sweetness up front is quickly replaced with a big bitter hop hit. Relatively strong, hoppy and bitter finish and aftertaste. ABV is fairly well hidden. M: Moderate carbonation. Rather full body. Smooth. Inevitable impact of high ABV does have a negative impact on the mouthfeel. O: This is a big beer in aroma, appearance, and flavor. Would not be out of place in a DIPA tasting session: it may well stick out less in a group of DIPA than with a bunch of other barleywines. Tasty, but consume slowly. {Re-tasted March 2013 -- aged nicely and is a better, less-hoppy beer. Ratings partially adjusted for aged version}

This is it for barley wines. Great hop and complex malt aroma and taste. All is so will balanced in bitterness and malty back bone. A perfect barley wine in my opinion. a+++++
