Gold Medal Winner, Great American Beer Festival (Ales: Brown, Bitter and Pale 1987, Barleywine 1988,1992,1995). Sierra Nevada Bigfoot is an award winning example of the English Barley Wine style. It boasts a dense, fruity bouquet; an extremely rich, intense, bittersweet palate; and a deep, reddish-brown color. This ale is superbly balanced between an almost overpowering maltiness and a wonderfully bittersweet hoppiness.

2013 bottle. Pours a clear, deep copper with low head that dissipates fairly quickly. Some slight lacing. Aroma is fruity with a nice blend of caramel and hops. Hop aroma could stand to be more pronounced for such a young barleywine. Flavor is fruity caramel and brown sugar with big hop bitterness at the finish. Big mouthfeel. Overall impression is bold and nicely balanced. A true classic seasonal that I look forward to every year.

2013 bottle. Huge hoppy barleywine. Bit like lagunitas brown sugga. When I first tried this about 7 years ago I really hated it - thought the US citrus hops really clashed with the sweet malt. So I don’t know if my palate has just completely changed (likely as a result of drinking US barleywines and imperial stouts non-stop this winter) , or if a few years in the bottle has mellowed it out a bit. Pine in the nose and resin all the way through the finish.

Pours a cloudy, ruddy brown with thin tan head. Aroma is fantastic - malty with booze and a touch of piney hop. Flavor has a more pronounced bitter that takes the forefront, with slight malt sweetness almost balancing. I find this just a little rough on the palette between the bitter and the booze, but the liquid is very smooth, low carbonation, and slightly cloying - all of which I enjoy.

From Uvinum. In Teku glass. Watching Sons of Anarchy 5x01. Amazing aroma. Great taste. A bit alcoholic but with a nice touch of bitterness that compensates it.

Clear mahogany color with brownish head. Aroma has nice caramel malts but also some earthy and resiny hops. Taste starts slightly sweet with caramel and dark bread notes and gets hoppy and bitter towards the finish. Aftertaste is quite bitter and dry. Really classic, american style barleywine taste profile.

This is one complex beverage. Pours clear amber-red, beige froth head. Aroma is huge array of flowers, juicy fruits, berries. Taste is boozy, fruit, tons of complexity. Finishes with juicy fruit, floral and chocolate. That’s good.

Bouteille 355ml, 2014. Carbonatation faible, corps moyen.

12oz bottle with commonmac. Mahogany with small head. Sweet alcohol nose. Aggressive from the start. High sugar and high alcohol, . Sharp tingling finish. Drying alcohol sticks with you for a while. Not a ton of complexity. Better barley wines out there but this isn’t bad, considering it’s not a big style for this brewery.

Courtesy of Slovak Sniper! Pours a rich amber, with a dark fruity head. Aroma notes include deep fruity esters of plum, raisin, and licorice. It has a rich mouthful of malty grains, with notes of plum, raisins, bread, licorice, and a slight bitter finish. The alcohol is nicely hidden, this is a superb Barley wine!
