COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Blindfold Black IPA features a blend of hop varieties whose bright, fruity aroma complements the coffee-like flavors of dark roasted malts. Blindfold blankets us in darkness yet maintains a surprisingly light body and bold, hoppy character. This black IPA emerged from our Beer Camp program and builds on Sierra Nevada’s legendary love of hops with roasted malts for depth and complexity. Like its namesake, Blindfold is a bit disorienting--the color of a stout and the intense hop-forward flavors of a classic American IPA.

Minty and smokey aroma, but there’s frying bacon in the air here. Flavor hops first then smooth, roasted malt flavor. A hint of dark fruit. Long bitter finish; the hop bitters play nicely with the burnt malt bitters. It’s more hop and more roast than others. Black IPA and bacon infused meatballs, yum.

Puts almost black with a very thick tan head. Rather thin like a porter. Taste is lots of coffee and some chills, burnt malts and some dark bread. Finish is bitter, lots of fruity flavors with a little floral. A nice ipa.

A steady pour into my New Belgium globe glass produces a fat-two-finger thick, lightly browned, dirty tan colored head; the head has quite a bit of structure to it, and forms a nice mesa like structure to it, plus leaves some lacing on the sides of my glass. The beer is a concentrated brown, not quite black color that shows a deeply concentrated, but clear, amber / brown tinged hue around the edges when held up directly to the light. The aroma smells of a mix of tropical fruit, pine, menthol like herbal notes, all with a backdrop of roasted, slightly burnt, whole grain bread. Specific hop notes of kumquat, guava, tangelo candies, and citrus syrup form the dominant hop notes, but the roast character accentuates herbal and woody notes to be fairly noticeable as well.

Up front there flavors of ripe citrus fruit, and a supporting, but quite noticeable flavor of floral tropical fruit notes. This continues through to the finish, and there is also a pervasive bitterness that starts at the beginning of each sip and continues through to the long, dry finish. The finish has a bitter roast character to it, as well as a bit of grain / hop astringency, a lingering pine flavor, and some spicy menthol notes as well. The body is quite light, though there is some heft to this beer, enough to keep it interesting, but not so much that this beer is not dangerously quaffable. The roast character leans towards burnt whole grain toast, a touch of complex dark coffee, and perhaps a touch of dark chocolate.

The roast character definitely brings out the bitterness and harshness of the hops. Having said that, this is still a tasty beer that I am happy to be drinking.

In bottle. Great on a crisp evening. Hippy. Surprisingly light. Good value beer, typical of sierra Nevada

Pours black with a dark tan head. Great resiny hop aroma, hard to find the malt there. Flavour is very dark malts, maybe even some grain astringency, but the hops, I think almost lend a sweetness to balance that. If that's even possible. Smooth finish with bitterness.

Pours black with a large, lasting off-white head. Nose shows soft clean roast, piny hops, liquorice and spicy notes. Roasty flavours with a fair bit of supporting piny, spicy and grapefruit hop notes. Actually quite drinkable with a little sweet malt underneath. Carbonation is just a little high.

12oz bottle. Pours black with a small creamy tan-colored head. Roasty malt aroma alongside some citrusy hop aroma. Roasty sweetness upfront in the flavor followed by hoppy bitterness in the finish. This might be the most balanced black IPA I have tried so far. Light-to-medium bodied. Better than expected.

Blindfold black IPA is a dark black brown beer with a thin head of off white bubbles. Nose is slightly of floral and evergreen hops. Taste is sharp on the tongue at first. malt and hops resolve nicely as on the finish into a very balance dark IPA. Body is very lively from the beginning all the way through.

Floral aroma from the hops and a coffee aroma come from this very dark brew with a creme colored head. A choc coffee taste with a slight sharp bitterness and an aftertaste where the choc fades and the bitterness grows stronger in this medium bodied brew. As a black ipa i believe it to be sweeter than most and not as bitter. Not a bad brew but not a favorite.

Pours from 12 oz bottle a deep black with dark tan edges and a nice off white head, with decent lacing. Flavour is roast, roasted nuts, chocolate, molasses, light char, a little booziness, floral, citrus and pine hops. Overall decent black IPA.
