Totally solid Black IPA. Expect nothing less from SN. All the nice dark roasty flavors are there- chocolate, coffee, toast, raisiny, molasses with some hop presence to balance it out. Drinks pretty smooth- the hops are definitely there, but not overpowering. Solid, balanced, smooth- really good. Nothing overly exciting, but good.

A really lovelly beer this. Like a strong porter with a querky character. Not too sweet, nice hop and malt balance, without the coffee of a porter style but heading in that direction. Lovelly.

Not as deep as expected...a little more for the masses if you will. They’ve made a great black ipa before so this pretty good one was a little bit of a letdown. Really little of the chocolate & coffee versus orange peel and citrusy hops that I love. Light porter type roast with lighter than expected aroma and flavor hops with some dry bitterness at the end

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
BOD 109/14. As advertised, this one pours just like a stout - almost black with a massive head. Lacing and retention are excellent. The nose is more IPA like, pine and floral hops over a light chocolate with roast notes. Medium body with a slick texture that is almost creamy. Below normal carbonation with no effervescence on the finish. The unique flavor profile is quite nice, balanced and complex. It begins with citrus hop, then flows to pine over a light chocolate sweetness. Bitterness follows that is citric rind in nature over a very light smoke from the roast - very well balanced so each component is evident, but not over powering. The smooth finish leaves you with a lingering citric bitterness with a chocolate note. An Outstanding example of the style.

I had this at Global Brew. Pours black with tan head. Taste roasted malt, fruit, coffee. I wasn't impressed. I would not drink this again.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Aroma has a hint of smokey roasty, but also that soapy oily hop note. Some floral notes. Dove soap. Like plastic. Waxy.
Looks fine. black brown.
Taste is... hoppy. Oily. But smooth. Smokey notes are subtle: more so than I would like in a black IPA. Pretty malty.
Plate is watery. Long finish. Hops are bitter but not overpowering.
To me this is an IPA that is black, not a black ipa. Which I swear makes sense. I feel like a black IPA should marry roasty and hoppy notes (like Victory Storm King). This is more IPA than roasty.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
[Bottle (12oz)] Pours a very dark brown with a huge lasting frothy tan head. Some lacing on the glass. Aroma of lightly roasted malt, leafy peppery hops, chocolate, a hint of vanilla and some coffee. Flavour of toasted malt, leafy hops, notes of coffee & chocolate and a moderate bitter finish. Medium bodied. pretty good Black IPA.

As black as a stout, with a billowy, off-white colored head and beautiful, sticky lacing, I would never guess that this was any sort of IPA from its appearance. The aroma reminds me of a spiced stout, heavy on basic, roasted malts that smell like smoke from a hookah (the fruity tobacco kind, folks). Those fruity hops are what makes this beer really work. You’d even think this was a stout from the flavor if it wasn’t for the flavors of resin in the finish. I don’t think it’s as hop-forward as Sierra Nevada states, but it’s enough to catch your attention and turn this beer into something exciting and new. And it’s expecting you.
The first half of the flavor, from the moment it enters the mouth until halfway through the drink, is fruity and dry, with notes of charred wood and roasted malts, husks and all. Then, halfway through, a resinous bite and some hefty bitterness washes takes control, leaving an almost lambic-like fermented fruitiness to keep you engaged. I like it… the hop bitterness really doesn’t interfere with the roasted malts at all, like a well-practiced, choreographed dance.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pretty much a textbook BIPA. Citrusy hop aromas and flavor, roasted malts, medium bitter finish. A bit of an overwhelming acrid bite at the end, too stout like, bit of a clash between the roast and hops

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle. Fairly dark brown with a large beige head. Aroma has grapefruit, pine, kumquat, a little char, mocha. Nice but not all that vibrant. Dryish side of bittersweet with rather dull mocha, citrus and pine floating through towards a fairly bitter finish. OK, maybe a bit old.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
12oz bottle, 4-Way IPA Variety Pack. Dark pour, huge lacing. Aroma of roasted grains, pine hops. Sweet malts flavor, tastes of roast. Finishes with a sharp pine hops bitterness. Well done. (4152)
