COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Blindfold Black IPA features a blend of hop varieties whose bright, fruity aroma complements the coffee-like flavors of dark roasted malts. Blindfold blankets us in darkness yet maintains a surprisingly light body and bold, hoppy character. This black IPA emerged from our Beer Camp program and builds on Sierra Nevada’s legendary love of hops with roasted malts for depth and complexity. Like its namesake, Blindfold is a bit disorienting--the color of a stout and the intense hop-forward flavors of a classic American IPA.

Pours pitch black with a nice milk chocolate colored head. It has a sweet, dark, and hoppy aroma. It starts off piney with hints of sweet chocolate with a bitter floral aftertaste. An excellent black IPA!

Aroma has a hint of smokey roasty, but also that soapy oily hop note. Some floral notes. Dove soap. Like plastic. Waxy. Looks fine. black brown. Taste is... hoppy. Oily. But smooth. Smokey notes are subtle: more so than I would like in a black IPA. Pretty malty. Plate is watery. Long finish. Hops are bitter but not overpowering. To me this is an IPA that is black, not a black ipa. Which I swear makes sense. I feel like a black IPA should marry roasty and hoppy notes (like Victory Storm King). This is more IPA than roasty.

[Bottle (12oz)] Pours a very dark brown with a huge lasting frothy tan head. Some lacing on the glass. Aroma of lightly roasted malt, leafy peppery hops, chocolate, a hint of vanilla and some coffee. Flavour of toasted malt, leafy hops, notes of coffee & chocolate and a moderate bitter finish. Medium bodied. pretty good Black IPA.

As black as a stout, with a billowy, off-white colored head and beautiful, sticky lacing, I would never guess that this was any sort of IPA from its appearance. The aroma reminds me of a spiced stout, heavy on basic, roasted malts that smell like smoke from a hookah (the fruity tobacco kind, folks). Those fruity hops are what makes this beer really work. You’d even think this was a stout from the flavor if it wasn’t for the flavors of resin in the finish. I don’t think it’s as hop-forward as Sierra Nevada states, but it’s enough to catch your attention and turn this beer into something exciting and new. And it’s expecting you. The first half of the flavor, from the moment it enters the mouth until halfway through the drink, is fruity and dry, with notes of charred wood and roasted malts, husks and all. Then, halfway through, a resinous bite and some hefty bitterness washes takes control, leaving an almost lambic-like fermented fruitiness to keep you engaged. I like it… the hop bitterness really doesn’t interfere with the roasted malts at all, like a well-practiced, choreographed dance.

Pretty much a textbook BIPA. Citrusy hop aromas and flavor, roasted malts, medium bitter finish. A bit of an overwhelming acrid bite at the end, too stout like, bit of a clash between the roast and hops

Bottle. Fairly dark brown with a large beige head. Aroma has grapefruit, pine, kumquat, a little char, mocha. Nice but not all that vibrant. Dryish side of bittersweet with rather dull mocha, citrus and pine floating through towards a fairly bitter finish. OK, maybe a bit old.

12oz bottle, 4-Way IPA Variety Pack. Dark pour, huge lacing. Aroma of roasted grains, pine hops. Sweet malts flavor, tastes of roast. Finishes with a sharp pine hops bitterness. Well done. (4152)

The Dark IPA has been a very interesting ride over the last 5 years. Been thinking of making my own.

pours dark dark brown. leaves a ring and some film. smells pretty nice, lot of citrus type hops. Here is what this is: a really nice black IPA. I would like to see a bit more of the chocolate malt shine thru here, maybe tone the bitter down just a touch to bring out the malt. at the same time, I know we start to cross the line there. but cmon. black pale ale?

A black body with a rich tan head that had excellent retention with some lace. A nice roasted malt presence. Mostly grapefruit hops and a bit if smoke. Flavor had good balance between roasted malts and bitter hops. A bit too much grapefruit. A nice moderately dry finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
