COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Blindfold Black IPA features a blend of hop varieties whose bright, fruity aroma complements the coffee-like flavors of dark roasted malts. Blindfold blankets us in darkness yet maintains a surprisingly light body and bold, hoppy character. This black IPA emerged from our Beer Camp program and builds on Sierra Nevada’s legendary love of hops with roasted malts for depth and complexity. Like its namesake, Blindfold is a bit disorienting--the color of a stout and the intense hop-forward flavors of a classic American IPA.

Pours black (duh) with a small tan head that leaves no lacing. Excellent roasted malt aroma intertwined with the grapefruit citrus from the hops. Doesn’t taste as good as it smells but good nonetheless. Coffee and chocolate up front with the grapefruit bitterness at the end. Good body and carbonation. I liked this beer a lot.

Certainly black, but doesn’t taste much like an IPA. Despite this, it’s not a bad tasting beer.

From a bottle. Mild roasted aroma, very bitter coffee flavours up front that mellow to a fruity hop finish. Pretty good stuff.

Roasted chocolaty, citrus and pine aroma that pours a deep black, with a tan head. The flavor is full bodied with a distinct bitter/hoppy finish.

Transfer from BA review on 3-23-14- My second of the new brews sierra included in their IPA 12 pack Poured from bottle into a pint glass Appearance – The beer pours a deep brown, nearly black, color with a huge billowy cream colored foamy head. The head has a fantastic level of retention, very slowly fading to leave tons of foamy lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma of the beer is heaviest of hop smells of a pine and earth with a hint of a citrus grapefruit. Along with the hop are some darker roasted malt aromas with chocolate the heaviest of them, but also containing some coffee and smoky smells. With a bit of a light fruity aroma of pear and orange in there as well, the aroma is actually a rather nice mix of hop, roast, and sweet. Taste – The taste begins with a big roasted malt flavor of a chocolate and coffee taste. Along with these flavors are some very light hop flavors of a more earthy nature. A decent level of sweetness is present from the start with some light fruit flavors and a tiny bit of caramel. As the flavor advances more roasted chocolate comes to the tongue which is accompanied by an increase in the hop flavors of the brew. A pine hop flavors grow quite potent toward the end and is joined by some other hop of a more grassy nature. With a bit more sweetness of a light fruit flavor coming to the tongue as well as a bit of a lessening of the coffee at the very end, one is left with a nice roasted, nicely bitter hopped and moderately sweet and smooth flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the on the average side in terms of both thickness as well as in terms of its carbonation. The very midlevel carbonation and thickness are a good combination for balancing, but yet still supporting, the mix of dark, sweet, and hop in the brew and make for a nice drinking black IPA. Overall –A rather enjoyable brew overall. A nice mix of hop, sweet and roast that creates a smooth and easy drinking style.

At just on cool and into a snifter. A massive plume of off-white foam builds off the pour to reach a good half inch out the glass. Below the beer has deepest brown in the shallows but is otherwise black and opaque. There is rich, dark chocolate, cola soda and vanillin atop some of the strongest most stinging notes of pine needles I have yet to smell on the aroma. Roasted malt dominates this one. Dominant burnt malt notes, roasted barley, charred wood and dusty notes giving it a pasty, chalky feel. Medium to medium-light bodied with spritzy light carbonation. There is plenty of spice and pine in the finish with a medial bitterness more malt than hop. It comes together nicely. Quite rich as it warms further. Definitely sticks around, almost tarrish. A long way from other BIPA’s, this is delicious. Hefty, big, bold, malty and rounded. Delicious! (12fl.Oz, bottled on 28/05/14, The Liquor Shed, Jandakot)

Puts almost black with a very thick tan head. Rather thin like a porter. Taste is lots of coffee and some chills, burnt malts and some dark bread. Finish is bitter, lots of fruity flavors with a little floral. A nice ipa.

A steady pour into my New Belgium globe glass produces a fat-two-finger thick, lightly browned, dirty tan colored head; the head has quite a bit of structure to it, and forms a nice mesa like structure to it, plus leaves some lacing on the sides of my glass. The beer is a concentrated brown, not quite black color that shows a deeply concentrated, but clear, amber / brown tinged hue around the edges when held up directly to the light. The aroma smells of a mix of tropical fruit, pine, menthol like herbal notes, all with a backdrop of roasted, slightly burnt, whole grain bread. Specific hop notes of kumquat, guava, tangelo candies, and citrus syrup form the dominant hop notes, but the roast character accentuates herbal and woody notes to be fairly noticeable as well.

Up front there flavors of ripe citrus fruit, and a supporting, but quite noticeable flavor of floral tropical fruit notes. This continues through to the finish, and there is also a pervasive bitterness that starts at the beginning of each sip and continues through to the long, dry finish. The finish has a bitter roast character to it, as well as a bit of grain / hop astringency, a lingering pine flavor, and some spicy menthol notes as well. The body is quite light, though there is some heft to this beer, enough to keep it interesting, but not so much that this beer is not dangerously quaffable. The roast character leans towards burnt whole grain toast, a touch of complex dark coffee, and perhaps a touch of dark chocolate.

The roast character definitely brings out the bitterness and harshness of the hops. Having said that, this is still a tasty beer that I am happy to be drinking.
