Blindfold Black IPA features a blend of hop varieties whose bright, fruity aroma complements the coffee-like flavors of dark roasted malts. Blindfold blankets us in darkness yet maintains a surprisingly light body and bold, hoppy character. This black IPA emerged from our Beer Camp program and builds on Sierra Nevada’s legendary love of hops with roasted malts for depth and complexity. Like its namesake, Blindfold is a bit disorienting--the color of a stout and the intense hop-forward flavors of a classic American IPA.

Bottle. Black pour with a medium, dense, foamy tan head. Strong roasted malt and floral and piney hops with soft coffee notes. Big pine and citrus blended with roasted malt, dark chocolate and bitter, black coffee. Body is medium with a creamy, dense, bubbly carbonation. Lingering hop bitterness on the palate and a slightly oiliness as well. Bold roasted malt and coffee notes with citrus oils, pine resins and floral hops during the finish. Nice!

Poured a very dark brown with a medium-sized light tan head that lasted. Aroma has chocolate, veggies, and nice hops. Some grapefruit/pine. Taste is nice and roasted with nuts and malty flavors. Finish has lots of hops that balance it out, some grapefruit and more pine. Overall this is a great black IPA. I’m not a huge fan of the style, but this is very good, the balance is perfect.

12 oz bottle from the variety pack bought at Albertson’s in Hayden, ID. Aroma is chocolaty, bready, roasty. Pours dark dark brown to black with a large beige head with great retention, leaving curtains of lace after it recedes. Taste is bittersweet, with grapefruity hops intermingling with the roasted malts. Has a lingering bitterness that I wish was dialed down a little bit. Creamy mouthfeel, finely carbonated. Nice enough.

Jet black with fluffy tan head. Slight aroma of piney hops. Flavor is a burst of hops and a real nice smokey roadtllsted flavor. Much more smoke than other black ipas I have had. I REALLY LIKE HOW THE HOPS GO WITH THE SMOKE.. nice beer.

Pours a dark, reddish, brown-black with small, creamy tan head. Aroma of roasted grain, coffee, even some leather. Flavor is bitter, with coffee, chocolate, the aforementioned leather and some nice spicy hop bitterness. Finish is quite bitter. One of the better black IPAs I’ve come across.

12oz bottle picked up tonight at Brewer’s Haven... Pours with a 2 finger dark tan head... great lacing... the brew is black as any porter. Nose shows dark chocolate... dry roasty malt... piney/pithy citrus hoppiness. Dry roasted malt... a bit ashy IMO... sorta astringent and doesn’t exactly jive with the big "C" hops. Body and carbonation are about expected... Okay, but not in my top tier of Black IPA’s.

Bottled. Poured medium-deep brown with a creamy, sticky, well-retained beige head. The aroma picked up fresh pine and earthy hoppage over cocoa and biscuity malts.. some generic brown malty sweetness on the back of the nose.. solid overall. The flavor found moderately-roasted brown and molasses-y malts at the core, with fresh, somewhat grainy pine, earth, and roasty bitterness around.. finished grainy with good balance between the roasty malts and the supporting bitterness. Medium-bodied and well-carbonated.. nothing really popped here, but I thought the balance, feel, and overall presentation were very good.
