Blindfold Black IPA features a blend of hop varieties whose bright, fruity aroma complements the coffee-like flavors of dark roasted malts. Blindfold blankets us in darkness yet maintains a surprisingly light body and bold, hoppy character. This black IPA emerged from our Beer Camp program and builds on Sierra Nevada’s legendary love of hops with roasted malts for depth and complexity. Like its namesake, Blindfold is a bit disorienting--the color of a stout and the intense hop-forward flavors of a classic American IPA.

Poured deep opaque mahogany into a tulip glass with a sudsy (almost creamy) light coffee colored head. Bright citrusy hop forward nose with back notes of sweetness and coffee. Medium carbonation and light mouthfeel. A reasonably balanced flavor profile of earthy hops and deep roasty malts. It's more well composed than many in the Black IPA family. A bit too cold at 46d but the flavors really came together as it warmed slightly. I'd come back again. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours a dark, porter like Brown with khaki head. Aroma is roast malts, coffee, pine, grass. Very balanced. Taste is coffee, roast malts, grass. Bitter. Palate is medium body, high carbonation. Pretty good!

12oz bottle poured into a tulip glass. Dark brown with decent beige head. Pleasant roasty aromas, grassy hops and fresh coffee. Roasted malts, coffee, medium bitterness, faint dark chocolate notes. Medium bodied, balanced and somewhat creamy. Cool.

12oz bottle pours an inky black with some creamy, lacing, slightly tan head. Nose is very well balanced and spot on for the style, some pine, some dried orange peel, bread crust, malt, some burnt molasses. Flavor is similarly balanced, the brown sugar sweetness hits first, mild molasses, a little coffee grounds, mild toast, then the dried orange peel and pine needles follow. Bitter, dry finish.

Like the bottle says, color of a Stout, taste of an IPA. Strong alcohol content.

Bottle from mane liquor. Nice black pour with a tanned head. Nose is very roasty - coffee, malts, chocolate and grapefruit. Taste is upfront roasted coffee and malts. Nice subtle grapefruit hop bitterness. More chocolate coming through in the finish. Pretty well balanced. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

At a tasting, many thanks DSG, medium bubbly mocha head, opaque extremely dark brown colour, flowery herbal aroma with some citrus in the back, aroma of roasted malt and bitter dark chocolate, strong herbal bitterness with a touch of citrus, almost completely dry. Very good and nicely balanced.

Coffee, leather, and citrus aromas. Black with nice head. Darkness, presumably from roasted grains. Nice blend of hops. Surprisingly light body.

Black with a beautifully thick head. Coffee, leather, and citrus aromas. Flavor is bitter, but very smooth, and astringent in the aftertaste. Some juniper flavor in the finish. Another surprisingly good offering from Sierra Nevada.

Dark brown pour. Fluffy khaki head. Pretty typical Sierra Nevada hop aroma. Lots of grapefruit. Hint if coffee roast. Flavor was still 80% hop flavor, but more malt flavor than in aroma. Nicely balanced. ---Rated via iPhone
