Brouwerij (883) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - MAR 11, 2014
Bottle, label says 6.8%. Pours dark brown with small tan head. Settles quickly with thin lace. Aroma is toasted, mildly roasted, nutty, toffee malt, mildly citrus, resinous hops. Flavor is roasted, toasty, toffee malt up front, fading into citrus, piney, bitter hop finish. Mildly toasted, nutty, toffee aftertaste. Balance of roast/malt and hops, hop flavor could be bigger. Soft carbonation, medium body, smooth texture.

HonkeyBra (3108) - Lemont, Illinois, USA - MAR 9, 2014
12 oz. bottle. Pours a darkish black with a mild beige head. Aroma of chocolate, pine, resinous notes. Smoke mild smoke and meat notes. Flavor is strong bitterness with medium umami and mild sweet chocolate notes. Medium bodied, somewhat coating mouthfeel. Above average carbonation. This really tastes like Torpedo with a dark malt profile. And thereís nothing wrong with that.

Not bad. Bitter throughout. Lots of roastie character. Hop presence is lackluster... Not a bad beer but not a great black ipa... ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pour out of 12 oz bottle, thick black pour with tan head, aroma brought notes of roast, some grass, pine, earth, slight orange into some coffee, touch of chocolate as well. Taste is a mix of chocolate, roast, coffee into a bit of grass, pine, earth, finishing fairly bitter.

12oz bottle from Downer Wine and Spirits. Pours a deep, dark brown color with a tan head and some lacing. Aroma is hoppy, pine, some light citrus. Medium on the palate with creamy carbonation. Flavor is sweet, malty, roasty, chocolate, hoppy, citrus, orange, some grapefruit, some pine, with a bittersweet chocolate finish. Nice.

A solid black IPA, nice hop profile, black flavor is present, nice mix between the porter like beer and the hoppiness that you would expect from SN, rivals the other black IPAs I have had from SN, and any other brewer for that matter.

12 ounce bottle from a mixed 12 pack. Aroma is roast with charcoal and ash tray. The aroma also has some minty, herbal, perfumey hops, with reminds me of some sort of incense-smelling head shop. Mostly transparent dark mahogany body with a medium to large, fairly strong and rocky mocha head present. Starts a little sweet with some chocolate malts and a little anise coming through in the middle. Finishes with a creamy, almost milky maltiness. Late herbal hops that are rather mild and restrained. Not a whole lot different than the hoppy Sierra Nevada Porter. I fucking hate Black IPAs.

Bottle. Pours deep, but still translucent, dark brown. Good thick khaki head. Roasted notes dominate in the nose and it has just a slight touch of citrus. Flavor is very nicely balanced - wonderfully layered malt profile - soft and mildly sweet grains and robust caramely notes with just a tiny bit of toast - followed by a burst of citrus and pine with notes of bitterness and a light roasted malt touch. Probably my favorite black ipa - I really donít love this style but I love what SN has done with it.

Pailhead (4413) - Brownstown, Michigan, USA - MAR 7, 2014
Bottle: The aroma consists of moderate dark chocolate, roast grains, light-moderate pine, hay, citrus hops, and a hint of burnt notes. It pours a dark brown with some orange highlights when held to the light. It has a large tan head that has great retention and leaves behind a lot of sticky webbing on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with moderate chocolate with a touch of caramel. The finish has moderate citrus/grapefruit hops, pine, light-moderate roast, and a touch of burnt notes. Itís medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Overall, itís pretty tasty. Like most Black IPAís, itís really easy to simply label this a hoppy Porter.

cbfobes (2149) - Madison, Wisconsin, USA - MAR 6, 2014
Poured from 12oz bottle, pours a very dark brown with a little bit of a red hue with light coming through, light tan head, aroma is pretty roasty with a little bit of chocolate and citrus mixed together, the flavor has more roast and chocolate than a lot of black ipas with some bitterness in the finish, not bad.
