Blindfold Black IPA features a blend of hop varieties whose bright, fruity aroma complements the coffee-like flavors of dark roasted malts. Blindfold blankets us in darkness yet maintains a surprisingly light body and bold, hoppy character. This black IPA emerged from our Beer Camp program and builds on Sierra Nevada’s legendary love of hops with roasted malts for depth and complexity. Like its namesake, Blindfold is a bit disorienting--the color of a stout and the intense hop-forward flavors of a classic American IPA.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle. The pour a dark brown tone but not quite black with a very foamy tan head that maintains its carbonation level. The aroma has the dark barley malt and molasses characters I might have expected but not a big hop nose. The taste is bit better than the nose suggests with a biting bitterness and black licorice like qualities.

Bottle. Dark black pour, 1/4 inch tan head and an aroma of roasty aromatic malt and citrusy hops. Flavor is mild roasty and peaty malt, licorice and more nice mellow orange hops. Almost like a dialed back version of Surly Blakkr

Black pour, thin tan head. Roasty, dark malt aroma, slightly hoppy, citrus. Taste is coffee, roasty, orange, very smooth. Pretty good.

Pours black with a light tan head. Roasty nose with a good bit of pine in there. Medium to full body, relatively round on the tongue. Slight burnt notes, light coffee, pine needles, and some earthy hops. Lasting bitter finish. Pretty much what I think of when I think black IPA.

Good name. So in ten years will we distinguish styles with the name "pale IPA"? Bottle. Very dark brown. Roast, hop petrol on the nose. Flavour is pretty sweet with roast, along with the berry and citrus flavour. And garlic. So much garlic. Can’t say I’m a huge fan of this, too much garlic/hop petrol, and tips too far toward sweetness.

~Roasty malt aroma with citrusy earthy hops. Well balanced between the two. ~Pours a very dark brown color with orange tints. Big foamy brownish white head. ~Strong roasty malt flavor that lingers hroughout with earthy hops. ~Medium bodied with medium CO2, burnt roasty long lasting finish. ~Roast is a bit much on this one. still enjoyable just a bit off balanced in flavor.

Bottle. Black with a light brown foamy head. Coffee, ritz crackers, orange rind, rubber and earthiness. Taste has a dry bitterness that increases before fading.

Pours a rich dark brown with frosted head and substantial lacing. Earthy malt notes, hints of caramel on the nose. Creamy mouthfeel, bitter on the back of the tongue. Really nice black IPA.

Black as night, thin head, minimal lacing. Very hoppy. Tastes grassy and is heavy on lemon zest with a finish of aromatic grains....possibly rye?

Bottle shared at a tasting at Beer Market Jaffa. Black, not opaque, with a light brown head. Aroma of roast, a bit of dark chocolate, nice fruity and piney hops with a herbal note and a light coffee hint. Nice bitter and hoppy flavor, roasty, with a bit of dark chocolate and a hint of coffee in the finish. Rounded mouthfeel.
