COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Blindfold Black IPA features a blend of hop varieties whose bright, fruity aroma complements the coffee-like flavors of dark roasted malts. Blindfold blankets us in darkness yet maintains a surprisingly light body and bold, hoppy character. This black IPA emerged from our Beer Camp program and builds on Sierra Nevadaís legendary love of hops with roasted malts for depth and complexity. Like its namesake, Blindfold is a bit disorienting--the color of a stout and the intense hop-forward flavors of a classic American IPA.

12oz bottle to sniffer. Nice light tan head about 2 fingers thick, extensive lacing. Dark roasted coffee aroma. Nice malty sweetness with mocha and dark chocolate. Bitterness of the hops is present but with minimal flavors. Nice dark deep brown near black color. Best of both worlds with the richness of a porter/stout and the bite of an IPA.

Pours a dark brown with a khaki head from a bottle. Aroma is a coffee, piney blend, flavor too. A little weird. Not sure I liked it, I guess it was okay.

12 ounce bottle. Pours a dark black with a slight red hue and a one inch tan head that lasts. Taste is of smoke, roasted malt, caramel, hops, citrus, resin an pine. Similar aroma. Has a full body with a fruity, dry finish. Easy to drink and rather enjoyable.

Iím hard to please when it comes to black IPAs. Brewers always seem to either put out what amounts to a slightly hoppier than usual stout, or a slightly maltier than usual IPA. Some brewers somehow manage to produce something that seems to have the best qualities of neither.
Sierra Nevada put out an excellent beer with this one, though. You immediately smell this warm rich hop cookie coffee aroma, and the taste profile is extremely rich and complex, with strong elements of very dark roasted coffee and an IPA with a hop profile that can stand up to that. Itís great for a cold windy winter night, and it a beer you canít sip doing something else and ignore- you will pay attempt to this, because the taste is that strong.
Some folks on this site are used to beers that cost a lot more and so it may not stand out to them, but I canít tell you that at a Sierra Nevada or a Sam Adams level price (Which is basically where I max at), this is the best Black IPA Iíve ever had. If youíre cheap like me, you owe it to yourself to try this. Hell, even if youíre not cheap and just want to save your beer money for something else temporarily. Itís a good brew.

From a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. Bottled on 12-10-14 so it was about six weeks old. Pours jet black with LOTS of frothy light brown head. Not much aroma. Mouthfeel is very light. SUPER roasty taste! I like it. Hops are subdued, old or just overshadowed by the roast, because I didnít taste much of any. Easy drinkable and seemed like it should have had less alcohol. Pretty decent. Iíd try another single if I could get it fresher... but otherwise, just OK.

12 oz bottle: pours dark almost black with a light tan head. Aroma of citrus hops and roasted malts. Flavors dominated by the roasted malt but citrus and resin hops provide a nice balance. Mostly an ipa feel but solid malt counter. Great example of the black ipa style.

Pours a deep brown, almost black with a medium creamy lacing head. Aroma of orange zest, chocolate and caramel. Flavor of pine, grapefruit, aggressive bitterness, dry with light roasted character.

I find that I prefer to drink this straight out of the bottle as opposed to drink it out of the glass. When I drink it out of the bottle it doesnít taste like a black ale, not that I know what black tastes like. You canít really taste a color, right? Or can you? Iím so confused.

Pours a deep brown, nearly opaque with a head which required a 5 minute rest to finish the pour.......aroma of roasted grains, slight bit of coffee......taste is coffee grounds, overly bitter in the middle and smokey coffee grounds in the end. Not overly thrilled but Iíve tasted worsee.
