Blindfold Black IPA features a blend of hop varieties whose bright, fruity aroma complements the coffee-like flavors of dark roasted malts. Blindfold blankets us in darkness yet maintains a surprisingly light body and bold, hoppy character. This black IPA emerged from our Beer Camp program and builds on Sierra Nevada’s legendary love of hops with roasted malts for depth and complexity. Like its namesake, Blindfold is a bit disorienting--the color of a stout and the intense hop-forward flavors of a classic American IPA.

12oz bottle. Pours black with a tan head. Very malty flavors but the hops come through enough so that it is not too overwhelming and balances it out nicely. Overall another very drinkable brew from Sierra Nevada.

355 ml bottle as a gift by WheatKing at Q Club in SoHo, Central. Thanks Adam!

Looks: Deep blackish brown colour with no yeast sediments; Less than one-quarter finger head and soapy beige foam which fades in 20 seconds; Good sticky lacing with notable slight carbonation.

Aroma: Fragrant grapefruit as soon as it was popped, with passion fruit, blueberry, tangerine, strong pine, floral, dark roasted malt, black coffee, molasses, light earth, yeast, lemon and grass.

Taste: Mid to light sweet dark malt, with strong roast, nuts, strong black coffee, cocoa, burnt toast, grapefruit, strong molasses, pine, earth, yeast, strong lime and strong bitter grassy hops.

Body: Mid to light body. Slick and slightly oily palate.

Mouth Feel: Very roasty dark malt in a fair but slick body. Very intense black coffee and cocoa powder, more so than the hops! Balanced by pretty thick molasses sweetness. Also expressive grapefruit, moderate pine, no ooze, palatable earth. A multi-pronged attack of senses. Kinda exciting.

Hoppiness: Intense in all fronts - fragrant grapefruit, tropical fruit, subtle blueberry, pine, floral, earth in nose. Zesty grapefruit, pine earth, strong lime and grass in taste; Bitterness is very strong but scattering, for a lasting, strong bitter-sweet finish.

After Taste: Quite dry. Roasty, fruity and strong bitter to mouth.

Comments: This is one of those typical ‘intense for intense sake’ beer - expessive Mosaic aroma, strongly roasted malt for incredibly strong coffee and cocoa, barely balanced by sweetness and piney hops, but the bitterness is not focused. It’s massive alright, but not well-balanced or impressive.

Bottle from Mane Liquor. Sipped from the bottle. Big citrus in the nose, plenty of coffee and roasted malts. Flavours are malt dominated, espresso, roasted almonds, dark chocolate. Less hoppy than I hoped, and a slightly heavier mouthfeel. Borderline hoppy stout, but still a good brew.

7/12/2014: Sierra Nevada Blindfold Black IPA... Well it looks dark, really dark with a tan head. Nice aroma of creamy chocolate and herbal hops. Roasty and dry with a good bit of cocoa with a heap of herbal and slightly spicy-citrus hops. Medium, smooth body. This one is quite good and the best of the Sierra Nevada Mix 12-Pack (well, Torpedo is also good, but that’s a mainstay beer). Overall, it’s a well-done Black IPA that just about fits my definite of the style. 12 fl. oz. bottle from Kroger in Harrison, Ohio.

Pours a very dark amber brown with a tan head leaving moderate lacing. Aroma of malt and a little spice. Smith maltiness with a hop bite on the middle. Very easy to drink excellent addition to Sierra Nevada series.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Buy Rite, 7/11/14

Aroma: The nose is heavy roasted/burnt malts, dark coffee, underlying earthy hops
Appearance: Pours a dark brown-black color with a sheeting brown head and plus lace
Flavor: It reminds me of a hoppy porter, plenty of roasted/burnt flavor, and an earthy bitterness
Palate: The body is medium-plus, kind of a dry, ashy/chalky feel, with a lengthy finish
Overall Impression: This is another nice one from Sierra Nevada. Very roasty and very dry. This is something I could happily see drinking again.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle. The pour a dark brown tone but not quite black with a very foamy tan head that maintains its carbonation level. The aroma has the dark barley malt and molasses characters I might have expected but not a big hop nose. The taste is bit better than the nose suggests with a biting bitterness and black licorice like qualities.
