Sierra Nevada’s Imperial Smoked Porter is a complex mix of rich, dark flavors. The aroma is big, with pronounced roasted malt and hardwood smokiness. Wood-aged flavors add the complexity of toasted oak and vanilla, with a hint of the burned sugar depth of the brandy that gives way to a satisfying dry and warming finish. A single 55-gallon barrel of the beer was made and will only be available at a handful of very special tastings nationwide.

Pour on tap at the Denver Rare Beer Tasting 2012, dark black pour with creamy tan head, aroma brought notes of smoked malts, nice coffee, caramel, toffee, and dark chocolate notes, hints of brandy in there but a bit subdued, nice sweet molasses and a hint of dark fruit. Taste is a nice mix of dark chocolate, coffee, roast, going into smoke, slight vanilla and sweet brandy, touch of toffee, caramel and molasses, finishing fairly bitter and dry.

Sample at Denver Rare Beer Tasting IV on 10/12/2012. The beer pours black with a medium tan head that diminishes steadily to an outer ring. Short strings of lace. Aroma of smoked malt, vanilla and oak. Full-bodied with a smoky character and notes of caramel malt, brandy and and coffee. The finish is sweet with a burnt malt and and fruit aftertaste. Good beer overall.
