2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Draft @ Village Beer Merchant. As a fan of the saison style, I wasnít impressed with this strange hybrid. Itís like a sour dark hefeweizen with lots of roasty brown ale-type notes, and lots of spice/banana/wheat-yeast characteristics. If it was labeled something other than saison, my brain might stop trying to make sense out of it and therefore enjoy it more. Ehhhhh....

2.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20
Draft. Murky brown color, scant edge head. Aroma of brown bread. Taste is bitter and sour, a real mess. Not good.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
UPDATED: JUN 9, 2012 A: Murky, earthen brown body, medium sized off-white head with little lacing left behind.
S: Figs, oranges, raisins, dates, lots of malt. Slight pepper present. Not much in the way of the funky, yeasty, tart, earthen flavors typical to the style.
T: Rich caramel malt, figs, raisins, and orange. A little yeast comes through here, but not much else stands out.
M: Sweet. Medium body brew. Well carbonated.
O: While enjoyable, this doesnít fit the saison profile (nor the profile of specialty noel saisons or dark saisons). The earthy, yeasty, farmhouse funk just ainít here. This beer could have been marketed a dozen other ways that would have made more sense then calling it a brown saison.

2.5 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
On tap @Sierra. Pours a red/brown hue with thin head. I got a really strong banana aroma which is a little off putting, but alas no funk at least in the nose. Thicker mouthfeel with an almost dried almonds finish and very bitter. The finish is what really did me in, but seemed too rough on the palate with not enough flavor.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Smells solid Saison, sweet with bubblegum and wheat, with a yeasty background. Pours okay, not very Belgian-like, but quite brown. Tastes like a solid Saison made by Sierra Nevada should taste. It checks all the needed Saison traits off the list one by one, hefe-like but dry and bubbly, and adds an American Brown Ale northwestern hop finish. One flows easily into the other, surprisingly so, making for a sweet unexpected growler. (5/7/09)

4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Presentation: It was served in a tulip glass from tap at the Pizza Plant Italian Pub.
Appearance: Looking into the glass it had a deep reddish brown colored body with a creamy light tan head. The head was long lasting, thick and it left tons of sticky lacing to cling to the sides of the glass in thick rings. (Very Impressive)
Smell: The aroma hits first with a bit of boozy alcohol. This has a slight sting but it quickly fades into some nice fruity Belgian style yeast notes. Apple, pear, and some faint tropical fruit notes slowly come out as it warms up.
Taste/Palate: I got a little more balance here on the tongue then its aroma was suggesting. It has big bready maltiness fading into fruity yeast notes with a mild layer of boozy warmth just underneath adding an extra level of complexity and character. It is pleasantly sweet overall and it finishes fruity with just a light touch of hop spice. The texture is lively and well carbonated but yet still smooth with a nice full mouth feel.
Notes: My overall thought was that it is a very solid brew. Itís visually appealing and it brings a nice blend of flavor to the palate.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Reviewed from interesting very interesting beer; I liked it in the end. Pours a bit of a rusty brown color with a nice off white head. Nose brings some interesting combinations with brown malt and brown sugar plus some pepper and clove. Taste isnít quite as spicy and the yeast doesnít play as big of a role. Feel is nice with pretty decent carbonation and body. Definitely a fairly unique brew.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Appearance: clear brown with burnished mahogany highlights. Garnet glitters along sides and bottom. Small blotchy head of thin tannish proportions.
Nose: intriguing. Sweet and bready upfront with pumpernickel and dark whole grains. Floral in the back with the essence of standing amidst fields of wildflowers and grass abloom. Maple syrup, brown sugar in the back; mingles with breadiness for a very breakfast like nose of pancakes and syrup. Plump raisins decorate moist loaves of raisin bread.
Palate: sweet up front as the nose promised with an almost cloying hit of maple in the back and tingling its way along the sides of my cheeks. Yowza! Full and chewy with heavy dark and brown breads; pumpernickel. Flower fields and nature blooms in the back of each quaff, soothing the maple sweetness and enticing further quaffing. Palate dries after each swallow while my breath is one of dry breads and dry grains.
Final Thoughts: borderline too sweet for me. The saison definitely ended up taking back seat to the sweet maple quality of this brew. A bit more of a level playing field and I would have enjoyed her more. Nonetheless, she was alright.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Draft. A red-brown beer with a lazing beige head. The aroma has notes of malt as well as lighter notes of citrus fruits, brettanomyces, and alcohol. The flavor is sweet with ntoes of malt, lemon, brettanomyces, yeast, and bread, as well as lighter notes of alcohol, leading to a dry and slightly tart finish.

On tap at Falling Rock poured a clear reddish brown with a lasting tan head. Aromas of toffee, spice, light fruittiness and a hint of spice. Palate was light bodied and smooth. Flavors of toffee, earthiness, light fruittiness and a hint of spice with a smooth lingering malty finish.
