4.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
This beer was an impulse buy prompted by a surprisingly low price. I took note of the brewery and little else. It should come as no surprise, then, that I expected a very malty beer with little hop presence and a very full body. It seems a large number of beers brewed for the holiday season fit into that mold. The initial aroma did little to convince me otherwise. My wife disagrees with the mild aroma assessment, so maybe I’m imagining that (or have a cold or something). Anyway...
Wow. Lurking beneath the mild aroma was a mouthful of hops. The body is medium-light and the head is soft and seems to last forever. But the hops... There is almost no balance contributed by the malts, and for me, that is a good thing. A little more in the area of aroma might be desired (if for no other reason but as a warning to unsuspecting drinkers), but overall, this could easily be my favorite beer for now.
Had I known at the time of purchase that this beer was this good, I would have picked up a case or seven.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Nice aroma of fresh pine, some floral notes and a hint spice. Deep orange red color, with a huge tan head. Rich malt up front. Sweet. Caramel and fresh bread flavors. Huge richness in the malt. Bitterness cuts in nicely. Fresh pine and notes of pepper on the finish. Full rich mouth feel. Malt bill must be huge on this beer. Should be an everyday beer. Outstanding.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Btl pours a slightly hazy Amber color with red highlights. Monsterous, billowy off white head lingers forever leaving huge puffs of lace clinging to glass. Aromas of fresh baked cookies, pine trees, and citrus notes. Tastes of sweet caramel, orange and resin. Medium body, soft mouthfeel, adequate carbonation and a nice mild bitter finish. I don’t know what it is about this beer but every year I try one bottle and end up going back to the store for a 12pk! Big malty backbone balanced with the fresh hop flavors and aromas make this beer perfect for the holidays. Get this beer right when it hits the shelves and you will understand why it has such a huge following.

3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
More of a winter warmer than an IPA. Scone level sweetness works well with the orange and nutmeg aromas but doesn’t quite blend with the bitterness. Also a bit watery. Good, not great.
