It’s a shame when good barley goes bad. This spring, the combined effect of double digit sustained winds and concentrated rainfall created major stress on the normal course of our barley maturation — our crop went down for the count. Instead of crying in our beer—or lack thereof—we decided to do one better and make something new. Featuring organic malts and our estate-grown wet hops, this black IPA is the evil twin of our legendary Estate Ale. Black in color with a mild roasty flavor and moderate body, this beer has a bold citrusy and earthy hop flavor and aroma from the use of our own wet hops. We’d never let one bad harvest get in the way of a great beer, so join us in a toast to the memory of our devastating season.

I was excited for this beer mostly because i love Sierra Nevada beers. They are usually fairy hoppy. This one isn’t so much. Kind of watery with a little of a dry after taste. Not my favorite but is organic. I’m green now!!!

Bomber as a birthday present. Poured into my Sierra Nevada snifter. Black oily pour with a thick cream colored head. Aroma is coffee, chocolate, and roasted malt with some earthy hops. Flavor is similar with nice roasted malt notes and earthy and citrusy hops. Very drinkable. Overall a nice simple Black IPA.

Bottle. Black with a foamy tan head. A malty chocolate aroma with mild hops. A nice malty body and enjoyable finish. I like the style and this one is well done.

Bottle: dark brown pour with large tan head. Aroma is chocolate, smokey roast grain, and dark caramel. Flavor is milk chocolate, charred grain, burnt caramel, and some grapefruit hoppy bitterness running around in the background and finish. Nice flavorful sipping beer, but not much of IPA hoppiness, more of a porter with a mild hop kick. I still liked drinking it.

From a 75 cl bottle shared in Avon NC. Pours black with a frothy tan head that recedes leaving lots of lacing. Malty nose. Flavors of citrus, including a hint of grapefruit, and a bit of toasted nuts. Medium bodied. Lots of carbonation. Bitter finish.

Waxed bomber from Total Wine in Sacramento, CA. Pours dark copper, almost brown, with a large frothy light tan head. Aroma is earthy chocolate. Med + body. Flavor is smooth dark malt, dark chocolate, earthy, with citrus sort of coming in after all that. Extremely good stuff.

Bottle. Not great. Didn't like it that much. Becoming less a fan of a black IPA. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

750ml bottle @ Southern Appalachian Brewery ( Thanks go to TJ from Sierra! ). Decent for the style, mild but pleasant roastiness, a little burnt marshmallow. Nice head/lacing. No overwhelming hop aroma, and could use more throughout. Pretty hoppy finish with lingering bitter caramel...

On tap @ GABF. Just about black in color with a khaki head. Toffee, coffee, and roasted malt nose. Earthy and floral hops, bitter chocolate, and bitter citrus. Decent pine character. Flavor is roasted malt, dark chocolate, and some toffee sweetness. Lots of pine, roast, and earthy bitterness. Hints of citrus peel and floral hops.
