It’s a shame when good barley goes bad. This spring, the combined effect of double digit sustained winds and concentrated rainfall created major stress on the normal course of our barley maturation — our crop went down for the count. Instead of crying in our beer—or lack thereof—we decided to do one better and make something new. Featuring organic malts and our estate-grown wet hops, this black IPA is the evil twin of our legendary Estate Ale. Black in color with a mild roasty flavor and moderate body, this beer has a bold citrusy and earthy hop flavor and aroma from the use of our own wet hops. We’d never let one bad harvest get in the way of a great beer, so join us in a toast to the memory of our devastating season.

Sample at the Ale Wine & Spirits beer tasting on 10/24/2013: Pours a dark brown color with a medium tan head that recedes gradually. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malt, hops and pine. Medium-bodied with flavors of resiny hops, roast malt and a touch of citrus. The finish is slightly smoky and malty up front with a hoppy aftertaste. Above average overall.

750 mL bottle from SoHo Organic Market, Elizabeth City, NC. Cola-like dark brown pour with a frothy khaki head. Dark chocolate and smoke are most present in the aroma with muted tangerine and floral hops. Bitter citrus hops are front and center in the taste and are well integrated with the cocoa and espresso from the dark roasted malt. There is a lingering bitterness from malt reminiscent of chocolate covered espresso beans yet is toned down by the citrusy hops. A very well done black IPA.

I was excited for this beer mostly because i love Sierra Nevada beers. They are usually fairy hoppy. This one isn’t so much. Kind of watery with a little of a dry after taste. Not my favorite but is organic. I’m green now!!!
