COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
It’s a shame when good barley goes bad. This spring, the combined effect of double digit sustained winds and concentrated rainfall created major stress on the normal course of our barley maturation — our crop went down for the count. Instead of crying in our beer—or lack thereof—we decided to do one better and make something new. Featuring organic malts and our estate-grown wet hops, this black IPA is the evil twin of our legendary Estate Ale. Black in color with a mild roasty flavor and moderate body, this beer has a bold citrusy and earthy hop flavor and aroma from the use of our own wet hops. We’d never let one bad harvest get in the way of a great beer, so join us in a toast to the memory of our devastating season.

Pours a dark, dark brown with a tan head. Not much of a nose, at all. I like the taste, roasty with some citrus.

Nice and bold. Roasted and slight hop aroma. Beautiful dark in color with a decent head. Medium weight. Blended well with a slight wood and roasted flavor and bitter finish.

Waxed bottle poured a dark brown hue w/ huge long lasting rocky head and sticky lacing. Bold malty bread aroma. Initial taste is light sweet w/ a bold bitter finish. Tastes are dark roasted grain, peppery hops, licorice, and dark breads. Medium bodied. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bomber. Had to fight with the wax but persevered. Dark amber brown with a big fluffy tan head that lasts. Some lacing. An aroma of roast with soft fruit and earth. First sip makes me question this being an IPA. Just minimal hops. That is tasted until the beer warms up. Then gentle citrus fruit is tasted. A hint of chocolate and grain. Herbal notes with warming, too. As I look at the bottle it is from 2013 so I see why the hops have lessened. A nice rich feel. This has a lot going for it. Hops might have faded but there is plenty more to like.

Bottle from The Beer Cellar online store (April 2014). Brown almost black, tan head, roast grain, bitter chocolate, coffee beans, grassy/pine hops, full body, slick texture, resiney lingering bitterness. Very good.

Bottle from 2013. The aroma is hops, citrus and grass. Pours a dark brown with a light brown frothy head and excellent lacing. The taste is a medium bitter. The body is medium, the texture creamy, the carbonation lively and the finish bitter.

Love it - dark and toasty but doesn't overwhelm the palate with hops - I can actually taste it, and it's everything I want in a black ipa ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

"Similar, if not the same profile as the mellow but very good estate ipa. Well balanced and easy drinking, yet leaves an impression of both roasted coffee and citric hops in the aftertaste. Nice, as expected."

Pours a blackish brown, with tan head. Aroma of roasted hops and malts. Taste is well balanced and complex, moderately hoppy. Thumbs up on this interesting and unique brew.
