COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
It’s a shame when good barley goes bad. This spring, the combined effect of double digit sustained winds and concentrated rainfall created major stress on the normal course of our barley maturation — our crop went down for the count. Instead of crying in our beer—or lack thereof—we decided to do one better and make something new. Featuring organic malts and our estate-grown wet hops, this black IPA is the evil twin of our legendary Estate Ale. Black in color with a mild roasty flavor and moderate body, this beer has a bold citrusy and earthy hop flavor and aroma from the use of our own wet hops. We’d never let one bad harvest get in the way of a great beer, so join us in a toast to the memory of our devastating season.

Bottle from 2013. The aroma is hops, citrus and grass. Pours a dark brown with a light brown frothy head and excellent lacing. The taste is a medium bitter. The body is medium, the texture creamy, the carbonation lively and the finish bitter.

Love it - dark and toasty but doesn't overwhelm the palate with hops - I can actually taste it, and it's everything I want in a black ipa ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

"Similar, if not the same profile as the mellow but very good estate ipa. Well balanced and easy drinking, yet leaves an impression of both roasted coffee and citric hops in the aftertaste. Nice, as expected."

Dark in color - not quite black, but pretty dark - with dark red hues where light manages to escape, it’s not that good looking until you gaze upon its full, billowy light brown head. The head slowly, but eventually, settles to a very dense, stout-like thick layer, and the lacing is actually so thick that it’s frothy. The nose is dominated by roasted malts, scented wicker baskets, and a touch of burnt caramel if you inhale deeply enough. You can tell that there’s a hop presence in the nose, but it’s hard to pick apart the bouquet. The mouthfeel is a little confusing. It’s thin-bodied, but creamy at the same time. Burnt caramel introduces you to a harsh sweetness up front, followed immediately by what tastes like a conflicted combination of citrus hops and heavy roasted mats. The whole experience ends in a charred malt bitterness and a nearly resinous hop bitterness. Too much bitterness, and too empty on the palate. I doubt that leaving this in the bottle for none months could be responsible for such a disappointing experience, but you never know. Still, it’s pretty drinkable. I mean, I’ll drink the entire 25 ounces without any(more) complains.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Dancing Camel. Thanks Yoav. Clear dark red-brown with a frothy dark white head. Roasty, a little wooden aroma, dry, bitter, woody and rusty taste. Medium-bodied, roasty finish. Good!
