3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
On draft at Churchkey in D.C.
The beer is dark brown, with a thick, tan head that leaves some nice lacing on the snifter.
The aroma brings maple syrup, brown sugar, candies, malt and alcohol. Very interesting.
The flavor follows suit. Heavy on the maple candy and maple syrup. The beer is sweet, with a lingering alcohol presence. That said, itís not cloying (four to six ounces isnít, anyway) and the alcohol isnít overpowering.
The feel is creamy and smooth, with some heat gaining strength in the finish. I imagine this brew will age well.
Overall, an interesting brew. Not my cup of tea, but I enjoyed my small pour.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
UPDATED: OCT 31, 2012 Bottle, Chester Beer & Wine. Poured a clear reddish brown colour . with an off white head. Aroma of yeast and maple. Sweetish, earthy flavour, with notes of chocolate and roasted malt and some herbal/woody character . Dryish. slightly bitter finish. Bit disappointing considering the price.. Ok but not really sold on this.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Notes from old backlog: Pours a deep brown ruby hue with a thick tan creamy head. Very fruity and buttery aroma. Odd esters, dark fruit maltose and lots of diacetyl. Mild rounded carbonation. The flavor is of sweet dark fruits, caramelized malts, brown sugar and some apparent diacetyl. Quite sweet with lots of sugary maltose and butter. Lacking hop character. Eh.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
January 6, 2012 - with blankboy, garthicus, gregclow, jerc & mabel. 700?ml bottle c/o j&k. Looks unbelievably deep ruby, almost black, with huge fluffy and lasting tan head (4+). Roasty/leafy dry aroma, some alcohol - unsure about it. Tastes of herbal bitterness, treacle, something sharp and vegetal ... Astringent, leaves that really odd taste on the palate quite a while; interesting, but I doubt I would drink it again.

3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Very dark brown pour, almost black, with a nice 1 cm head that lingers a bit. Very unique aroma of maple, hazelnuts, coffee, anise, dark fruit, raisins, and slightly burnt bread. Taste has a bit of overpowering sweetness upfront and it kinda prevents all the flavors to come through. Flavors came out a bit more as it warmed bit it still remained a bit too sweet. It ends up tasting a bit like prune or grape juice with a hint of maple, coffee, and bread. Medium mouthfeel with a little stickiness. Soft carbonation with a long raisin, anise, dark fruit finish. This could be an amazing beer if properly balanced. Maybe more age would help it. Itís still very tasty though and I recommend trying it if you can.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from Total Wine, aged for 9 months. Deep, red-brown pour with a medium, persitent, fine-bubbled beige head which leaves a heavy coat of lace. Nose is birch, chocolate and a bit of booze. Heavy body and light, fine carbonation, yielding a lovely, smooth mouth feel. Licorice, birch, chocolate, maple, vanilla and brandy-soaked black cherries. Hops are there and resinous, but very much in the background as an accent. Balance is on the sweet side, but the bitterness and umami hold it up and keep it from being overly sweet. Finish is sweeter, with a touch of vanilla and wood in the aftertaste. Delicious ASA, very well done. I hope this becomes a regular íspecialí!
