Dark brown pour with a large creamy khaki colored head. Dunkel like aroma, dark fruit, maple, and some nuttiness. Hops are muted on the nose. Nice and easy on the palate with a warming sensation down below. Some hops are detected in the flavor, which helps to balance out the sweetness. Not quite to the level of cloying, but pushing the boundaries somewhat. This is a unique beer that would be even better if it were a little less sweet. For what it is though, I rate it a bit better than average and worth the purchase.

Batch 2, 750 mL bottle. Aroma has a fairly strong syrup note with with moderate dark fruit notes of figs, plums and prunes with light cherry and raisin character. Light honey notes with medium roast and toasted bread and light chocolate. Medium caramel and toffee along with light alcohol spice. Pours a dark brown, almost black with a thick, dark tan head with really nice retention. Fairly high amount of lacing with somewhat small legs. Flavor starts slightly sweet and fairly malty with a lot of toasted bread, moderate roast, and lighter notes of caramel, toffee and chocolate. Syrup note is present, but lighter than in the aroma. Flavor has a bit of a tootsie roll note to it. Moderate bitterness with light alcohol spice. Light dark fruit esters and a faint hint of honey. Mouthfeel is medium full to full bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. Overall, a better beer than I was expecting and the syrup notes have held up surprisingly well. Nice malt character that works well with the syrup. Alcohol is pretty well hidden and the dark fruit and honey notes integrate nicely.

Batch #2. Pours almost black with some reddish light struggling through, beautiful light tan, cake like head. Nose is pecan, caramel, toffee. Flavor is pecan pie, some age derived dried fruit and sherry, mild hints of roast, and flan. Mouthfeel seems to have thinned slightly from the mega chewy monster I remember... But that could just be a palate shift. Anyhow, age did this one right, so glad I have another.

Great aroma that is all so pleasant. I wanted to age this a little longer but I accidentally opened it (label looked very similar to another bottle). I think some additional aging would have enhanced the flavor.

Bottle aged for 5 yrs: Poured a mahogany with no head. Aroma is very complex with sap, roastiness, and maple. Taste is very full and sweet candy to the tongue yet nice roasted malt.

Vintage 2011, 2nd release A: Pours a dark brown ale with a finger of maple bar foam over the top. This head falls to a quilt of the same. Spotty lacing. Excellent, cherry hued clarity in this ale. S: Coffee, birch and maple (but mostly birch), nutty brown smell. Reminds me more of a brown ale; light and sweet. T: Sweet, hot. Tastes like the fermentation was poorly controlled with tons of roasted banana bread flavors and some more coffee and roasted malt flavors. Bad, disappointing at best. M: Thin but sticky, highly carbed, dry finish. The opposite of what I believe this beer should be. O: This does not make me happy. Does not make me want more. Reminds me of a RIS I did a couple years ago, the fermentation happened in the 80’s and the beer took 8 months to taste right. Kinda feel like that is where this one lands; making it very sub par. The beer pours great with a dark brown color that passes almost passes no light through it, has a great brownish head and has good lacing on the glass. The beer smells decently with a definite coffee scent with a sweet syrupy finish. The beer tastes great with a great blend of sweet maple syrup and a coffee finish. The mouthfeel is great with the beer being well carbonated and the mouth being sweet. Overall, I HATE COFFEE, but this is a great beer for a coffee lover with some sweetness.
