It has a deep sugary malt profile, hops are significant enough to notice, but do not take a leading role in the profile, aside from some decent bitterness on the finish. Reminds me of a Belgian noel brew. Syrup and slight spice linger on the aftertaste. Iím not really excited about this one. Drinkability is ok. Still a bit hot, some time in the cellar might help. Overall this is an ok beer, which is unfortunate because I like both of these craft beer giants. I just think they could have done better with the resources that both breweries have.

*Nice and deep brown beer. Viscous, caramel, dried dark fruit. Hints of sugary syrup with a moderate bitterness. Fresh but brown dark, bitter and viscous sweetish brew. Great!

2012 vintage. Dark and toasty in the taste, aroma fairly faint. Black body with small beige head. Taste makes up for aroma in a big way, plenty of burn at the back. Some dried pit fruit, some oak, some chocolate. Extremely enjoyable.

Rating from 8-28-2010.....Bottle....Pours very dark brown...medium brown carbonated head....thick rich body....dark slightly bitter malt--sweet up front on the first sip....aroma some brown sugar/dark malts (roasted)....a little cocoa throughout aroma and palate---I get the essence of oak. But Iím sure its the birch (never had birch in this way, only in soda).....the maple is present but subtle---thanks Wayne....It got better and better the more that I sipped

Batch 1
From notes. Tasted some time near the summer of 2012 from a capped bottle that I purchased in Tucson some time in 2008. Pours clear dark caramel brown with an average tan head that leaves thin, bubbly lace. The nose is caramel, maple, dark bread, and some nice baking spices. The flavor is more maple and caramel than anything else with the same dark bread and an added earthy yeasty note. The body is full with average carbonation and a long maple, caramel, and lightly charred bitter finish.
