3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
It has a deep sugary malt profile, hops are significant enough to notice, but do not take a leading role in the profile, aside from some decent bitterness on the finish. Reminds me of a Belgian noel brew. Syrup and slight spice linger on the aftertaste. Iím not really excited about this one.
Drinkability is ok. Still a bit hot, some time in the cellar might help. Overall this is an ok beer, which is unfortunate because I like both of these craft beer giants. I just think they could have done better with the resources that both breweries have.

2.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 8/20
Vintage 2011, 2nd release
A: Pours a dark brown ale with a finger of maple bar foam over the top. This head falls to a quilt of the same. Spotty lacing. Excellent, cherry hued clarity in this ale.
S: Coffee, birch and maple (but mostly birch), nutty brown smell. Reminds me more of a brown ale; light and sweet.
T: Sweet, hot. Tastes like the fermentation was poorly controlled with tons of roasted banana bread flavors and some more coffee and roasted malt flavors. Bad, disappointing at best.
M: Thin but sticky, highly carbed, dry finish. The opposite of what I believe this beer should be.
O: This does not make me happy. Does not make me want more. Reminds me of a RIS I did a couple years ago, the fermentation happened in the 80ís and the beer took 8 months to taste right. Kinda feel like that is where this one lands; making it very sub par.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
The beer pours great with a dark brown color that passes almost passes no light through it, has a great brownish head and has good lacing on the glass. The beer smells decently with a definite coffee scent with a sweet syrupy finish. The beer tastes great with a great blend of sweet maple syrup and a coffee finish. The mouthfeel is great with the beer being well carbonated and the mouth being sweet. Overall, I HATE COFFEE, but this is a great beer for a coffee lover with some sweetness.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Poured into an Ovila chalice, this beer poured a very deep brown with small spotty off white head and lacing down the glass.
Very malty smell. Molasses and a touch of roastiness. Very little hop aroma.
Definitely a malty brew, but nowhere near cloying. Thick molasses flavor throughout with just a bit of hop spice.
Almost like a good thick barleywine. Thick consistently, but again not overly sweet.
Very good beer. Hides the alcohol well and drinks smooth.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Cellared for 2 years. Wood, syrup, caramel and toffee on the nose. Pours a deep reddish brown almost opaque almost no head. The taste is mostly sweet with only a hint of bitterness on the end. The wood and syrup come through alot in the flavor. Medium bodium slick mouth feel and very soft carbonation. Might be a little too sweet after sitting for so long but I one the less a killer beer.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle of #2 shared thanks to Matt! Pours a hazy brown with no real head or lacing. Aroma is light of caramel, toasted malt, and toffee. Taste follows, but everything is bumped up a notch, like an imperial brown ale. Good stuff, but didnít age gracefully.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pour is a dark brown/deep ruby color with a fluffy khaki head. Sweet smelling, a lot of wood coming up front, caramel, maple syrup, slightly boozy, toffee, toasted malt, and maybe a hint of pine. Still getting lots of wood on the taste, lots of caramel and maple, subtle chocolate notes, dark fruits, thereís definitely some birch there, and a light roasted coffee taste on the end. Nice dry finish. This is one of the first beers Iíve had that I aged for awhile, and I think it turned out great. Nothing drastically different from what I remember (from 2 years ago), just slightly mellowed and it seems more woody than I remember.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle of 2011 L&L #2. A: Chocolatey, nutty, rich, though overall a mild scent. (My bottle is sort of cold.) A: Black, almost obsidian. Sticks to the glass. Pile of foam fades quickly, thin layer lingers. T: Chocolate, malty. A year really calmed down the alcoholic note. O: Great maple/birch dark ale---and, moreover, benefits from age. Stick this one in the closet.
