COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Limb & Life is a companion to the big beer-an acorn off the larger tree. (Life & Limb) It is a 5% ABV small beer-a low-gravity beer made using the residual sugar as “second runnings” from the first larger brew, fortified with American hops. This is a session beer.

Reviewed from notes. On tap at Churchkey. Pours a moderate caramel brown. Almost looks woody. Nose is fairly light, but there are noticeable notes of leafy hops, leather, maple, and molasses. The taste certainly brings a lot of these elements, though they are certainly faint. The finish is dry and brings out a bit more. I wonder if this would have been better in cask. Draught at Capone’s: Faint aroma of malts and slight birch. Poured very deep orange/very deep amber/brown in color with a small, off-white head that diminished but lasted around the edges. Clear. Not sparkling. Flavor is lightly sweet and lightly bitter. Tastes of light roasted malt, burnt malt, wood, and birch. Medium body. Lightly dry texture. Soft to average carbonation. Roasted malt finish. Disappointing.

On tap at PP Carlsbad. Dark amber/brown pour, frothy off-white head. Hops, grapefruit, some herbal grassy notes, and nutty malt. Decent, not great.

Tap at Capones. Pours a lightly hazy deep amber with a medium creamy off white head. Aroma of hop tea, light birch, some maple, floral hops and toffee. Flavor of hop tea, weed, very resiny hop profile.

Location: On tap at Capital Ale House - Innsbrook, 11/24/09

Aroma: Aroma of dough, pine, citrus, caramel, orange, brown sugar, and nuts
Appearance: Pour is a somewhat murky brown color with a nice beige head
Flavor: Taste is kind of sweet with a lot of the same components as the nose
Palate: The body is light to medium, with a smooth feel and a doughy texture
Overall Impression: Overall, I liked this one more then some of the other raters it seems (though as the 15th rater, I guess there isn’t enough data to know what other raters really think. I thought it was an interesting beer, a nice attempt. I’d like to try to big brother (Life and Limb), and see these two breweries collaborate again in the future. This one could probably use a some work rounding it into shape, but overall I enjoyed what they did here.

Draft @ Isaac Newton’s. Low gravity beer is dark, has birch and sugar notes but really is less drinkable than the big beer version. Not a fan.

Tap @ Rattle n’ Hum. Poured a clear deep chestnut color with an off-white head. The mildly roasty aroma was of light coffee beans and chocolate. Grapefruit citrus hops also mix in. Citrus and grapefruit hop flavor from front to back with some mild notes of chocolate and coffee. Light body. Long very hoppy finish with a mild bitterness.

On tap at Capital Ale House - Downtown on 12/22/2009. Clear dark brown body with ruby highlights and a medium creamy tan head that lingers. Sweet malty aroma with light roastiness and a bit of floral and earthy hops. Malty, roasty and hoppy flavor. Medium body with moderately low carbonation.

On tap at Del Cerro Liquors in San Diego. Pours a clear medium brown with a fading beige head. Aroma is caramel and bready malt, orange peel, and floral hops. Flavor is caramel, toffee, orange peel, and citrus/floral hops, some leafy notes. Body is medium light and the finish is bitter. Decent overall but didn’t live up to the hype. Will need to try Life & Limb.

On tap at the special Max & Joe’s Life and Limb release party and paired with its big brother. I actually liked this second running even better than Life & Limb. Pours a dark brown, almost black color with a thin off-white head. The body was no where as watery as I had expected. The roastedness was so pronounced that the hops were not so out-of-whack as you typically get in a parti-gyle style of beer. Smooth and drinkable. Delicious in fact This is simply the finest small beer that I’ve ever tasted.
