Limb & Life is a companion to the big beer-an acorn off the larger tree. (Life & Limb) It is a 5% ABV small beer-a low-gravity beer made using the residual sugar as “second runnings” from the first larger brew, fortified with American hops. This is a session beer.

On tap @ Papago. Really solid, sessionable brown ale. Mahogany pour with a fizzy eggshell head that doesn’t leave significant lacing. Aroma is cocoa, brown sugar, and biscuit. Flavor shows honey, chocolate, and a slight coffee finish. Medium mouthfeel with ample carbonation. Good.

Growler at a CL release. Pours a deep copper red and a thin off white head. Aroma is spicy, woody, moderately sharp sweetness, rough harsh burnt malts and toffee, roast, green woody hops, light citrus and sweet. Flavor is sweet and hoppy trying to cover up some astringency from some burnt malts, astringent over-sparge and slight solvent, some apple and earth - eh- ok.

On tap at Brouwer’s. Best part about this beer was its pour, a deep red brown with a tan head and lace. Tastes of grapefruit and floral hop with some caramel. Odd tea taste that faded quickly. Sometimes collaborations work. This one really didn’t.

ROGUE (2182) - Lewes, Delaware, USA - SEP 8, 2011
On tap at Rehoboth brewpub. Pours a dark brown color with a one finger off white head that has nice retention and Leaves some spotty lacing. Aroma is earthy and woody with an underlying piney citrus hoppiness. Flavor has a mostly mildly sweet, earthy, grainy taste with citrus hops and a light roastiness through the finnish. Light bodied with mild carbonation and a nice smoothness. A really good session beer.

Draft @ TAPS Petaluma. Pours a deep, clear cola-brown color; huge, textured light-tan head with excellent retention and lacing that coats the glass. Basic tea and light biscuity malts in the aroma; very light, bland. Medium mouthfeel: wet barley, tea, and very light brown sugar / tannic black tea notes upfront; a light, vaguely juicy perimeter of citrus and mienral bitterness; not bad, but the tea-like core is very bland: cardboard and water; it tastes, indeed, like second runnings (or a decently hopped mild). This looks and feels pleasant, like most SN beers, but the core just isn’t quite developed enough. Medium finish: wet grains, basic toastiness.
