COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Flipside Red IPA is a rebuttal to the mild-mannered beers of summer. Tropical fruit and citrus hop flavors from the use of whole-cone Citra, Simcoe and Centennial hops are the perfect notes for this in-between season.

9/26/2013: Sierra Nevada Flipside Seasonal Red IPA 2013... Aroma: Ripe tropical fruit and melon (ugh, stupid Citra hop!) with a twish of pine; suggestion of caramel malt. Appearance: Hazy bronze color with reddish highlights and a swirling column of carbonation in the center; dense, lasting, beige-colored head on the top; solid lacing from top to bottom. Flavor: Lots of hops right up front and luckily the Citra is a bit over-powered by the Simcoe and Centennial flavors; good dose of grapefruit peel and some resin in the finish; middle allows some of the toasty, lightly caramel underlying maltiness to pop through the hops for just a slip second or two and add just enough sweetness; hints of spice, dried herbs/flowers, and tea here and there; fairly generous level of bitterness; finishes very clean. Palate: Solid medium body; well carbonated to help bring out the hops, texture is slightly slick. Overall: Pretty good IPA in general, but doesn’t quite hit on all cylinders for me as a Red IPA, but maybe that’s because the Pacific Northwestern Style Red IPA is the yard stick I use for the style... 12 fl. oz. bottle (Alc. 6.2% by Vol.; 3235111:12) from Trader Joe’s in Cincinnati, Ohio. Rating #233 for this beer.

Red copperish color. Some floral and slight tropical hops. Medium bitterness for an IPA. Sort of a red Rye base. Ok.

Pours a dark chestnut/mahogany brown with a finger of khaki head. Quite reticent aromas of some hay, cow dung, a little iron and hoppy citrus and mango. The hoppy fruitiness comes out more and more as it breathes and the initial aromas subside. Medium bodied palate with a refreshing feel. Predominantly dry and with a nice malty base, moderate use of bittering hops. The finish is a bit more than average. Pretty tasty. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Earl of Essex. Keg. Clear deep amber beer, small pale cream colour head. Palate is a little airy and is minerally crisp. Mildly creamy malts, unsweet toffee streak. Hops are thin marmalade with a crisp floral bitterness on top. Finishes light. Decent bitter linger. Very easy drinking.

On draft at Gibney’s in Atlanta. Pours red (shocker!) with a small off white head. Aroma is mostly malt with some lightly grassy hops. Flavor follows with sweet malts, caramel, bready, a little grass in the backdrop. Medium light body, medium carbonation. Definitely not an IPA here...really more of a not-so-hoppy red ale. Pretty decent nonetheless.

Draft. Pour was deep orange to red in color with a small head and ok lacing. Aroma of citrus and fruitiness. Flavor followed with earthy hops and some grassy notes. Mouthfeel was moderate to full for the style. Wanted more bopppiness but a nice brew.

Keg at Earl of Essex, London. It pours a deep amber ruby color with a small beige head. Aroma is spicy with notes of rye grains caramel melon and citrus. Taste is medium bitter with floral notes, melon, wheat, hay and citrus peel. Finishes bitter and dry. Overall, ok but woul expect more from Sierra Nevada

Nearly opaque crimson colour, mid sized head. Very nice malty aroma with notes of hops, citrus, caramel, and spice. Creamy and quite full bodied for an ipa. Absolutely delectable. Creamy malt, caramel, and dried fruit dominate the initial taste, but the finish is wonderfully hoppy just as I had hoped.
