Clear garnet pour with a 2 finger, frothy beige head that has great retention. Aroma is earthy, grassy, citrus and pine hops, woody, husky grain and something of a strange floral note. Flavor is woody, husky grain, fallen leaves, woody tannin-like notes, grassy, pine and herbal hops, some crusty bread and light caramel sweetness. Light to medium, dry body with a slightly chalky feel and medium strength, sharp carbonation. Decent, but has a bitter, planty undertone all over that doesn’t really work for me. Tastes like maybe they used all of the expensive hops listed, but neglected to use any hops at all late enough in the boil to add much flavor or aroma on the more vibrant side of the hoppy spectrum that Citra and Centennial suggest. I might try this again to see if it smoothes out a bit as some of the strange planty notes could just be a little IPA greenness.

Unclear reddish dark amber. Grayish off white head. Mild to moderate bitter. Fairly dry. Perfume. Pine. Citrus. Pineapple. Caramel. Its different. Good.

DATE TASTED: October 9, 2015 ... GLASSWARE: Barley Creek pint... OCCASION: a good week and a good time for something flavorful... APPEARANCE: dark, amber-brown body with intimidating, slow-rising effervescence... thick, off-white, almost dirty snow head that chunks and bubbles in its center, but clings and characterizes as mountain ranges at the glass... ... AROMA: this would be the high floral breeze of Hallertau, if it were not for the slightly earthy aromas that suggest the label’s Simcoe, with the melon/tropical fruit of Centennial powerfully on display--no doubt about it, Sierra Nevada always manages their trademark allure into just about everything; the bitterness is palpable but welcoming... PALATE: medium-bodied and creamy, with a prolonged aftertaste, active, sippable but weighty...this brings an Autumnal feel to the IPA, with a heavier foretaste and subdued fizziness... TASTE: immediate maltiness apprehends the tastebuds--again, is this what the Fall tastes like? The caramel and toasted bread linger as the mango, melon, stone fruit, and a variety of flowery herbs enter the profile... the creaminess packages the flavors attractively, though this lacks--on purpose--the lighter, airy, intoxicating aspects of the traditional IPAs... OVERALL: what a solid beer to pair with an Autumn night such as this--could this beer stand up to a mild cigar? ESB overtones make for a heartier, less bitter, blunter experience; the mango and melon persevere and make a lasting impression, in what can rival both the Pale Ale and Vienna Lager in the Fall mix...no losers here...

Pours a dark auburn body with limited light khaki head. Fruity nose of pineapple, tangerine, grapefruit, with hints of malty goodness. Taste is earthy, pine, spicy finish. Good level of bitterness. Different and decent IPA.

Dark brownish ruby color with two finger light khaki head. Smells of citrus, tropical, pine, dank. Taste is tropical fruit sweetness on the front of the tongue with a piney tea like bitter on the back. Caramel malt with a spicy bitter half way through. A bit of a rye like bitter is present as well.

Brown pour, perhaps red tinted. Nice fluffy tan head. Aroma is subdued at first but comes out as the beer warms. Malty nose, a bit of heavy roast, some astringent resin, nothing like the hop aromatics of contemporary IPAs. Where is the citra and simcoe in this? I can’t find them! Rather old-school resiny hop flavor, plenty of caramel, some stronger roasty notes, not bad in any way, but far short of exciting. More a complaint about the style (I could live without hoppy red ales quite easily) than about the crafting.

Bottle. Clear chestnut pour, creamy head, good retention and lacing. Hop profile: citrus, spice and pine. Malt profile: biscuit, caramel, and bread. Nicely balanced. Moderately sweet, pleasant bitterness. Creamy texture, medium body, average carbonation. Overall: this "style" of beer (the heavily-hopped but still assertively malty beer) is pretty much completely missing from my diet these days, and I don’t really ever crave a beer like this, but this ain’t bad.

Multipack of Sierraness. Without pouring it in the glass one has a lightly hoppy full bodied malt based beer with a twang for a finish. A decent drinker as this is my second of the afternoon. decent with pistachios and cheese.
