This experimental beer pulls character from a member of the Fungi kingdom other than yeast: mushrooms. Dashes of sauteed shitake mushrooms dance with fruit notes for a truly elusive aroma, while the restrained use of California-grown wild rice lends a sweetness to Fungoo’s dry finish.

Very little aroma, some spice maybe. Better than I expected. A sweet strange body with some hops in the finish. Kind of like a Vienna, or sweet Okto.

On tap at burger. in Santa Cruz. Mushrooms and wild rice? God. This is funky, stinky, sweaty and weird. I don’t even like mushrooms. I don’t know why I tried this. The rice is obvious in the thin body and mildly in the flavor as well. This is whack.

Tap. Pours clear amber with creamy white head. Aroma is cereal and bready malts, light fruit, light vegetable notes, grassy notes, and faint toffee. Flavor is a smooth balance of malts, hops, and fruit esters with some light vegetable notes towards the finish; dry finish. Medium body and low carbonation.

Draft. Pours clear coper red. Tastes like sweet, syrupy, smokey bacon. Light body and low/medium carbonation. Smells like molasses and bacon.

Pouring at the Saturday sessions of Extreme Beerfest. Pours a clear amber with a thin white head. Soft toast on the nose. Medium bodied, sweet malt, not much mushroom or anything. Very easy drinking malty amber. Pretty good stuff. I doubt anyone having it without knowing the ingredients would pick up on everything in it, so certainly could have been a bit more bold, but definitely tasty.

On tap at EBF 3/16/13. Pilsner malt sweetness with an earthy lightly spicy edge. Surprisingly different, but I really enjoyed it. As a side note, this is the second beer I’ve had with mushrooms in it that I really liked, but as food I can’t stand them.

Tap at the brewpub. Pours light amber brown with a beige head. Aroma is hard to describe. Med body. Flavor is in the earthy/musty category. Seems mildly fruity also. Very different. Finishes towards dry, sort of earthy, and lightly bitter.
