3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
12 oz bottle from the Bayou - Labeled as "The best of beer camp double IPA" Camp #29 - Pours a slightly hazy straw yellow color with medium sized fluffy pure white head. Aroma has a fair presence of chewy, bready malts with a fair amount of resiny, soapy, slightly citrusy hop character along with notes of lemon and grapefruit zest and honey. Flavor has a sturdy backbone of chewy malts along with a subdued presence of citrusy and piney hops in the front end. The later stages of the flavor is dominated by a very prominent and slightly harsh bitterness. Palate is a tad thick for my tastes in this style - could be a bit drier IMO. Overall this is a good but not great double IPA. I think Sierra Nevada makes great beers, but I donít think that they really push the envelope very much, and in my mind a double IPA is a beer that needs the envelope to be pushed. This just does not have the hop aroma that beers like Pliney and Hopslam have - it seems like it needs more dryhop. The bitterness is also a bit too much, and it is not quite as dry as I think it should be, so it is not quite as easy to drink as the really dry double IPAs. Although good, I donít think I would seek this out again, when there are so many good double IPAs out there.

"served cask conditioned/hand pump at the Sierra Taphouse, Reno. Big citrus and grassy aroma. smooth and mellow beer given the strength and bitterness. it started VERY nice and kinda faded by the end, but itís still nice. lots of orange peel an lawn, though the cask mellows it out. a touch thin, but delicious. bottled beer camp double ipa 5/24/11 - even more bitter, still has the wonderful aroma, just more punch in the finish. very well done, especially for the price."

Very unpleasant. This tastes like a mildly hoppy Budweiser. I am probably going to dump the rest of this after my second sip. DO NOT BIY OR DRINK

3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle code: 108921708 (around Mar 25, 2011)
A: Pours an apricot ale with a bit of haze. A single finger of peanut foam falls in a couple minutes to a sheet of the same. Cobweb lacing.
S: Alcohol up front, then sweet peaches, light citrus, pineapple, some tea notes. Malt is sweet and crystal. Mildly appealing.
T: Warm and bitter. The alcohol here plays a big part and creates quite a bit of a role in accentuating the hops which are bitter and resiny. Some fruits are in here, boldly dominated by pineapple flavors. there are hints of chemical tastes as well.
M: Thin with hi carbonation. Dry finish. Disappointing feel here.
O: This beer has the makings of what could be a really good beer, unfortunately, they didnít really work all the kinks out to make sure this one was up to SNís standards.

Iíd take a torpedo over this any day, but this is still a decent double IPA. Very piney, some resin and orange.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle from BevMo: Created a firm layer of frothy foamed head while the liquid was a dense and slightly hazy golden blonde. As for the aroma, there wasnít a whole lot to be smelled other than some light floral hops that barely came through, but other than the aroma was to faint. The flavor is much bolder in its delivery by serving up a thick syrupy base of malts as well as an earthy yet floral combination of hop pellets that have some bitter and metallic attributes. However, this isnít as impressing considering that this was a double IPA and the fact that Sierra Nevada has done a lot better in terms of crafting IPAís that are more balanced and have been rounded out thoroughly.

Hazy amber beer, tidy white head. Smooth semi dry palate, soft. Creamy fresh malt base. Sweetish hops - pine and pineapple. Traces of orange and bitter grapefruit citrus. Dry finish with a long bitter linger. Very nice!

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
August 24th, 2011 - Iíve never heard of Sierra Nevadaís Ghidorah before - I had this back when it was a number. Reviews must have been good, because, like Hugh of the Borg, this has been given a designation. Of the four beers that came in my Sierra Nevada Beer Camp pack, I recall this being the most conventional, but also the best. It glows with a sunset orange, diffusing sunlight through itís deep and sweet haze like a thin slab of marble. For all the light play, the aroma and flavor reveal a simple and solid double IPA. Hoppy and syrupy in the smell with lots of American hops bolstering the booze with bitterness, this beer puts its best and well balanced foot forward. Sweet but reasonable, bitter but not caustic, this is a balanced Double IPA that I missed between bottles.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
As far as Iím concerned Sierra Nevada can do no wrong so I bought the beer camp twelve pack without hesitation. The fact that they are putting out a mixed twelve with brand new beers is impressive even if they are one-offs. $17 wasnít too tough to stomach given the absurd price of everything these days. Nice orange yellow, decent head but no lacing oddly enough. Smell is kind of dank and stanky in a good way. The taste is hard citrus, bitter, well done. This needs to be a seasonal bomber offering, Iíd buy plenty.
