COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A group of hop-heads and publicans challenged our Beer Camp (#19) brewers to push the extremes of whole-cone hop brewing. The result is this: a 100 IBU, whole-cone hurricane of flavor. Simply put- Hoptimum: the biggest whole-cone IPA we have ever produced. Aggressively hopped, dry-hopped and torpedoed with our exclusive new hop varieties for ultra-intense flavors and aromas.

Hops, hops and more hops are the stars of this big, whole-cone Imperial IPA. Resinous ‘new-school’ and exclusive hop varieties carry the bold and aromatic nose. The flavor follows the aroma with layers of aggressive hoppiness, featuring notes of grapefruit rind, rose, lilac, cedar and tropical fruit – all culminating in a dry and lasting finish.

Bottle to snifter. Looks good; deep burnt-orange with nice lacing. Smells good too; nice and hoppy. Tastes solid. Hoppy without being too heavy. Mouthfeel was nice as well. Overall, a very good brew, and my favorite I’ve tried from Sierra Nevada.

Golden orange in color... Aroma of citrus hops.... Flavor has very prevalent notes of grapefruit contributing to its bitterness, tropical fruit, lemon tart.... Fairly dry overall... Pretty nice beer, but then again, I’ve been drinking Firestone Walker Union Jack IPAs all night so its tough to compare...

UPDATED: JUN 26, 2012 On tap at Pies and Pints and from bottle. Pours clear deep golden with medium white head. Some lacing, well carbonated, and light grapefruit aroma. Taste is grapefruit, hint of pine, and heavy bitter hops in the finish. Needs to be fresh and the finish is a little over the top bitter for me.

Poured clear, light amber color with white head. Aromas of citrus, pine. Taste is nicely bitter but the malts tame it a bit. Really a wonderful flavor and mouthfeel, smooth. Overall, another great one from SN. I put it up there with Hopslam.

Ar: Orange, lemon, and resiny pine - medium-low intensity. Ap: Orange-amber, crystal clear - small off-white head with medium-low retention. T: Pine, tangerine, and mango - high bitterness, with a bit of black-tea tannic quality - medium-sweet, and toasty - fruity hops are intense and juicy. P: Medium body with medium-high carbonation. O: The hop flavor is really standout in this beer - aroma is not quite on par, but the flavor more than makes up for it.

12oz bottle pours hazy gold with an rocky head. Aromas of pine floral notes of hops and grapefruit rind also grassy notes of hops and lots if hop resin. Flavor is huge and bitter lots of pine sap and alcohol. Body is medium to full with a real astringent feel lots of alcohol warmth. Finishes with a real bitter hippy flavor

Poured from 12oz bottle into tulip. 2012 release. Aroma: very hoppy floral and citrus. Grapefruit and lemon. Appearance: clear pour. Coppery brown color. 1 finger white head that faded quickly. Laces glass well. Taste: medium bitter and light sweet. Medium sour. Medium sour and very bitter aftertaste. Palate: medium body. Thick texture. Slightly syrupy. Lower carbonation. Bitter sour and alcohol in the aftertaste. Overall: similar abv to hopslam but not as balanced. Could use more sweetness. Very hoppy but maybe too much on bitter hops. Alcohol could be hidden better. Probably won’t pick this up next year.

12oz bottle pours a bright copper/orange with a large white head. Aroma of resinous pine sap, sweet caramel malts, toffee, honey, citrus, and tropical fruits. Taste of sweet caramel and biscuit malts, with honey, and bitter resinous hop oils stinging the sides of the palate. Solid!

Pours a nice looking amber orange with a small off white head and some lacing. aroma is nice with a lot of pine resin, grapefruit, tropical fruits, biscuit malt. flavor is nice and hoppy with a lot of pine, grapefruit, tropical fruits, biscuit malts, and some baked bread notes. Has a medium full body with a creamy mouthfeel and a dry bitter finnish that really hits you on the back of the tongue. overall, a very nice DIPA that is now my new favorite Sierra Nevada beer.

Poured from a draft into a goblet at San Diego Brewing Company on March 21, 2012. Color was caramel paleish. A good-looking beer. Minimal lacing on the top with bubbles on the sides. Light film on the sides of the glass. Smelled citrus hops up front. Grapefruit seemed to lead the way. Could smell the bitterness. Tiny amounts of pine. Tasted bitter hops up front but it balanced out after that. Could taste the alcohol, but it wasn’t overwhelming by any means. Smooth taste. Medium body. Average carbonation. Smooth finish. Really just a perfect feel. By far the best part of this beer. I went out of my way to try this beer (it was tapped earlier in the day at this place). Overall I was hoping for slightly more, but I did enjoy it and would try it again in a heartbeat.
