A group of hop-heads and publicans challenged our Beer Camp (#19) brewers to push the extremes of whole-cone hop brewing. The result is this: a 100 IBU, whole-cone hurricane of flavor. Simply put- Hoptimum: the biggest whole-cone IPA we have ever produced. Aggressively hopped, dry-hopped and torpedoed with our exclusive new hop varieties for ultra-intense flavors and aromas.

Hops, hops and more hops are the stars of this big, whole-cone Imperial IPA. Resinous ‘new-school’ and exclusive hop varieties carry the bold and aromatic nose. The flavor follows the aroma with layers of aggressive hoppiness, featuring notes of grapefruit rind, rose, lilac, cedar and tropical fruit – all culminating in a dry and lasting finish.

God was this stuff hard to get. I didn’t even know they had it for sale but I met a fellow hophead who told me they had it stashed behind the counter. Pours amber from bottle with a decent head. Big citrus notes on the nose and even bigger on the tongue. There’s bitterness but at a certain point the bitterness is so extreme it becomes sweet. The mouthfeel was thick almost like pudding. It has some linger to it but yet it hides it’s 10% fairly well. A great reward for a long day of work.

Thanks to bleeng and texasjeep for this beer. Golden orange pour with small head. Big nose of hops...grapefruit, flowers, and some sweet malts too. Flavor is a bit sweeter than expected, but works with the hops...easy drinking and flavorful.

Sampled at an ESBLS tasting. Clear golden with some copper. A small off white head. Very little aroma. Flavor is quite nice and they roll over the tongue in waves. There is pine, then floral, then grapefruit, then malt, then pine again. Flavors come one at a time. Delightful!

Bottle from South Bay Drugs: Created a thick fluffy layer of head where as the liquid was a dense golden honey color with slow rising bubbles. In the nose, there is a strong aroma of green wet hops that smell as if they were freshly picked but there is also a scent of nuts such as pistachio or maybe even cashew. The initial flavor is an overly intensive bite of bitter almost tart tasting green hops that boast of sticky oily resin fresh from the vine. The hops are highly potent and have a similar resemblance to orange, tangerine or grapefruit. Also, there is a base of sweet syrupy malts that when paired with the flavorful citrus hops, it becomes a complicated beer that requires attention.

(Bottle, 0.71 l, at Kaisla, Helsinki - shared with tiong and nokku, thanks, 20110512) The beer poured amber and clear. Its head was medium sized and white. The resinous hops dominated the aroma. Some notes of sweetness and malts could be found in the background. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were hops, pine resin, sweetness, malts, lightly almond and strong bitterness. Aftertaste was sweet, hoppy and bitter. This beer was quite extreme when considering hoppiness but still it showed nice balance, too.

Tap @ The Sushi Bar, McCall, ID: My oh my, this beer is quite the treat. Nice orange color with a big white sticky head. The nose is gigantic, tons of citrus and pine; grapefruit and spruce, mint and pepper. A hop monster with a floral fresh underpinning. Intense lemony flavor and a malty caramel mouthfeel, hoppy finish and a big long lasting tail. Even at this ABV, you can’t really tell how high it is because the hop obliterate anything, but with grace.

Shared bottle 70 cl at Kaisla, Helsinki. Poured clear amber in colour with thin tan head. Fruity and light grapefruit in aroma. Sweet in flavour with lots of hops pushing through. Malty notes as well, but mostly sweet, floral, grassy and fruity hops dominates the flavour. Nice apricot fruity flavour in finish and aftertaste.

UPDATED: NOV 1, 2013 710ml bottle @ Kaisla, thanks mjs and nokku.

Pours dark orange with a tiny clear head. Aroma has hints of pine and hops. Taste is quite strong. Starts out sweet and malty but hops kick in fast and balance the taste nicely. Hints of pine, grass and fruits. Finish is long lasting and a bit sticky. Alcohol is well hidden within the full body. Great, well balanced IIPA. 8-4-9-3-16 = 4.0

Re-rated on 1.11.2013. Bottled in April 2013. Tried one bottle from the same batch before and it was a boozy mess, but this one is a nice, massively bitter DIPA with a long lasting lingering grassy bitterness. Nice and tasty, even though it’s not very fresh anymore.

70cl bottle @Kaisla, Helsinki. Poured amber color with a thick white head. Aroma is very fruity and hoppy, orange, pine and pineapples. Flavor is hops, malt, pine and tropical fruit. Finish is long and bitter. Slightly sticky, oily mouthfeel. Nice full bodied brew. Not much alcohol noticeable, some warming finish mostly.

9/10/6/11/12/11
