A group of hop-heads and publicans challenged our Beer Camp (#19) brewers to push the extremes of whole-cone hop brewing. The result is this: a 100 IBU, whole-cone hurricane of flavor. Simply put- Hoptimum: the biggest whole-cone IPA we have ever produced. Aggressively hopped, dry-hopped and torpedoed with our exclusive new hop varieties for ultra-intense flavors and aromas.

Hops, hops and more hops are the stars of this big, whole-cone Imperial IPA. Resinous ‘new-school’ and exclusive hop varieties carry the bold and aromatic nose. The flavor follows the aroma with layers of aggressive hoppiness, featuring notes of grapefruit rind, rose, lilac, cedar and tropical fruit – all culminating in a dry and lasting finish.

2011 Bottling - Hops on nose, copper color with a light tan head, good lace. Palate was cream, then clover then hoppy, bitter finish. Layered flavors with malt and bitter in balance.

Pours basically orange with a small head and some lace. The aroma is floral and fruity with a little bit of dank character and a nice sweetness throughout. The flavor has some pineapple and sweet tarts right up front with a bit of booze as the sip progresses. The beer is only mildly sweet and is packed with piney and fruity hops with a nice high level of bitterness. Delicious.

Pours gold into a snifter. Bright white head with medium retention recedes to hug rim. Grapefruit, resin and pine aromas. Sweet and thick with upfront orange citrus turning to a syrupy, lasting resin finish. A sipper.

This bottle pours a clear copper with a big foamy/ beige head and lots of lacing. The nose is powerful with a lot of pine and grapefruit over light malts. Relatively full bodied and a smooth, slick, and oily mouthfeel. The flavor is intense with floral, citrus, and pine hops that make the malts fade into the background. This is about as hoppy as a beer can get, yet it is flavor that dominates here, not bitterness. The finish is long and dry and now bitterness shows up the most. This is a fantastic beer.

2011 bottle. Pours a transparent orange color with a small frothy off white head. Nose is big floral, grassy, piney hop notes with a light biscuit note and some light honey. Palate is thick and syrupy with a big hop bite in the throat and an active, fizzy swallow. Light alcohol in the nose. Alcohol warmth in the swallow. Mostly piney and floral hop notes with some honey like sugars and sticky sweet biscuits.

Sampled at the superbowl party at james’ place. Clear amber gold pour with good white head and sticky lacing. Big piney resinous abrasive hop profile. Sweet and bitter hops. No balance here. hopheads wet dream.

Bottle ; Pour is dark clear golden, with a modest off white head. Retains on the average side, with decent lacing. This one has an interesting aroma and flavor profile when compares with the other cali ipas, thus far. It’s interesting to see that the bittering hops is listed as "german magnum" because it does have a feel that is slightly foreign. Interesting floral bouquet on the nose, caramel malts are present; this brew is on the sweeter side for an IPA style: Grapefruit, floral notes, caramel , and an interesting tropical feel. Nice.

copper colored. aroma of pine, tropical fruits and sweet malts. grapefruit and other sweetness hit you up front, followed by a hoppy pine-flavored wallop, then some warmness from the high alcohol content. well done.

Somewhat fruity aroma, sweet-ish malt base, floral, fruity and resiny hops in the nose. Some vodka notes as well. Pours orange amber with a nice frothy head and some sticky lace. Sweet and fruity up front, orange, light citrus, floral notes. Hot vodka finish. Nice flavors, just a little hot for my full out endorsement.

Bottle thanks to John; thanks for picking this up for me! Pour is faintly hazy copper with a meium sudsy white head. Aroma is mostly resinous hops, ligh caramel malt, and light floral notes. Not overpowering. Maybe faint citrus notes too. Flavor is loaded with resinous, piny, and distantly citrusy hops. Also a distant caramel malt background and a slightly yeasty finish. Certainly drinks smoother than 10%.
