A group of hop-heads and publicans challenged our Beer Camp (#19) brewers to push the extremes of whole-cone hop brewing. The result is this: a 100 IBU, whole-cone hurricane of flavor. Simply put- Hoptimum: the biggest whole-cone IPA we have ever produced. Aggressively hopped, dry-hopped and torpedoed with our exclusive new hop varieties for ultra-intense flavors and aromas.

Hops, hops and more hops are the stars of this big, whole-cone Imperial IPA. Resinous ‘new-school’ and exclusive hop varieties carry the bold and aromatic nose. The flavor follows the aroma with layers of aggressive hoppiness, featuring notes of grapefruit rind, rose, lilac, cedar and tropical fruit – all culminating in a dry and lasting finish.

Oh yes, hops is the word. Nice deep amber-copper with a slightly offwhite head. Aroma is hops and citrus. Taste is plenty of hops, but the balance of the sweetness due to the potent ABV and the hoppy bitterness is a bit peculiar. First comes all of the sweet and then, briefly interrupted by some fruit, all of the bitter notes in a dominant finish which seems to never end. First sip is a bit surprising, but it settles...

Pour from bottle to snifter, bright gold pour with monumental head. First whiff of the nose is supremely piney with a layer of sticky peach, mango, and pineapple underneath, a toasty caramel backbone as well. The taste is very pine-forward, astringently floral, very resinous. Lingering is not pleasant, not my style really. It has some nice flavor going on, but the astringency outshines any of the hop characteristics with a soapy linger that is far too long. Old bottle? Maybe my worn palate is burnt out on these high-gravity doubles. I’ll try another day.

355ml brown bottle poured into a Sierra Nevada branded Spiegelau IPA glass. Appearance is clear amber with a large beige frothy head, that reduced fast leaving some lacing. Aroma of pine, grapefruit and a hint of caramel . Flavours of grapefruit, resin, orange peels, caramel and bread. Taste is medium sweet and heavy bitter. Palate is full bodied, slightly sticky texture and average carbonation. Sierra Nevada Hoptimum is a great Imperial IPA, maybe a little too sweet.

12 Fl OZ ($2.49 Bottle) this was a surprise! A good one too. coming in at 10.4 ABV and 100 IBU this is a monster. not just a smash in the face of power like some IPAs but a wealth of flavors that show you they thought about the flavor profile more than 3 seconds. This is not a beginners beer; if you’ve had this early on in your career go back and try it again. Glad to see real IPAs of substance for sale.
