A group of hop-heads and publicans challenged our Beer Camp (#19) brewers to push the extremes of whole-cone hop brewing. The result is this: a 100 IBU, whole-cone hurricane of flavor. Simply put- Hoptimum: the biggest whole-cone IPA we have ever produced. Aggressively hopped, dry-hopped and torpedoed with our exclusive new hop varieties for ultra-intense flavors and aromas.

Hops, hops and more hops are the stars of this big, whole-cone Imperial IPA. Resinous ‘new-school’ and exclusive hop varieties carry the bold and aromatic nose. The flavor follows the aroma with layers of aggressive hoppiness, featuring notes of grapefruit rind, rose, lilac, cedar and tropical fruit – all culminating in a dry and lasting finish.

Amber with thick head. Meaty and fruity aroma. Oily texture. Full bodied, but the alcohol is well hidden behind fruit, malt and bitterness in good balance.

Nice golden yellow colour with a white head. Nose is strong of hops with some fruity aromas like tangerine pushing through. Ofcourse with a beer with this great IBU the mouth is dominated by huge bitterness, though well balanced. Medium body with somewhat thick texture. Alcohol very well hidden. Really nice hop bomb this one from Sierra Nevada!

Poured from the bottle of a 4-pack to a pint glass, the first drink i took knocked me back a bit, wow! I get confused reading the wine taster like reviews of beers, I never taste the apricots or the sandalwood highlights people claim. I do on the other hand know good beer when i drink it and we have a good one here. I’m not sure how the hops and bitter balance works but if I can drink a 4 pack of a 10.4% beer in an hour I think it qualifies as balanced. Sierra Nevada strikes again with another winner!

Bottle at home. Pours medium dark orange with a frothy head. Aroma is hoppy but have probably lost some over that Atlantic. Bitter! Not that balanced.

UPDATED: NOV 4, 2014 I loved this beer when it first came out. This is by far my favorite style of beer. I do not know what happened to sierra Nevada. This as with all their IPA styles offers no flavor from the hops just the bitterness. The malt attempts to balance this but it just does not happen.

Firm lasting head. Fruity fragrance. Shallow aroma and restrained flavors but very overhopped. Not a balanced beer.

Bottle, 355 ml at Patrick’s Irish pub, Ljubljana. Pours orange with white head. Hoppy aroma. Incredible amount of hops, hop bomb. Piney and fruity. Long dry bitter finish.

(355mL bottle from Systembolaget) Pours clear medium orange with a smallish but long lasting whitish head with lots of lace. Aroma sweetish, resinous dank hops with tropical fruit and sweet citrus, quite floral as well, some fresh pine and a bit of caramel - not a massive aromatic punch but reasonably strong. Flavour is where this beer is at, sweetish pale etc. malts at first with dried tropical fruit, peach, orange, loads of hop oil resin though which really builds through the palate, floral and spicy and what you’d expect loads of whole cone hops to taste like, with some pine needle and a softwood plank sort of note but not really earthy. Quite a malt backbone to it but the sweetness isn’t crippling at any point, and dries out a lot with quite heavy bitterness on the finish - alcohol well hidden but hop resin lingers on the palate for ages (several minutes, actually). Palate medium full and oily, softish carb. The hop flavor in this beer is really big, quite bitter and resinous, and stands out because of it. More bitter than, for example, Ruination. It’s still pretty sweet (maybe that malt core is needed), but the biggest weakness for me was the aroma. Maybe the cost of shipping to Sweden. Still really nice stuff, though suited to a one beer night!

---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
