A group of hop-heads and publicans challenged our Beer Camp (#19) brewers to push the extremes of whole-cone hop brewing. The result is this: a 100 IBU, whole-cone hurricane of flavor. Simply put- Hoptimum: the biggest whole-cone IPA we have ever produced. Aggressively hopped, dry-hopped and torpedoed with our exclusive new hop varieties for ultra-intense flavors and aromas.

Hops, hops and more hops are the stars of this big, whole-cone Imperial IPA. Resinous ‘new-school’ and exclusive hop varieties carry the bold and aromatic nose. The flavor follows the aroma with layers of aggressive hoppiness, featuring notes of grapefruit rind, rose, lilac, cedar and tropical fruit – all culminating in a dry and lasting finish.

355mL bottle Bottled 07/08/14 Clear, viscous golden body with a dense rocky white head. Tangy hop aroma; bitter orange, grapefruit rind, sticky hop resin, pine needle, floral/grassy notes with backbone of caramelly, toasty malt. Texture is slick, oily, somewhat syrupy with a moderate carbonation and fair amount of weight about it. Seriously sticky resiny hop character - almost like drinking sap. An all-encompassing bitterness underpins the whole palate with notes of green pine needles, grapefruit skin, orange oil, green tropical fruits, woody spice. A good measure of toasty pale malt is there, but it hardly makes a dent in the onslaught of hops! Warming finish, lingering woody sappiness - keeps going, and going! Full on, intense IIPA - what you’d come to expect from the style. Aggressive, doesn’t hold back. Couldn’t drink much of it, but damn it’s nice!

Amber with thick head. Meaty and fruity aroma. Oily texture. Full bodied, but the alcohol is well hidden behind fruit, malt and bitterness in good balance.

Nice golden yellow colour with a white head. Nose is strong of hops with some fruity aromas like tangerine pushing through. Ofcourse with a beer with this great IBU the mouth is dominated by huge bitterness, though well balanced. Medium body with somewhat thick texture. Alcohol very well hidden. Really nice hop bomb this one from Sierra Nevada!

Poured from the bottle of a 4-pack to a pint glass, the first drink i took knocked me back a bit, wow! I get confused reading the wine taster like reviews of beers, I never taste the apricots or the sandalwood highlights people claim. I do on the other hand know good beer when i drink it and we have a good one here. I’m not sure how the hops and bitter balance works but if I can drink a 4 pack of a 10.4% beer in an hour I think it qualifies as balanced. Sierra Nevada strikes again with another winner!

Bottle at home. Pours medium dark orange with a frothy head. Aroma is hoppy but have probably lost some over that Atlantic. Bitter! Not that balanced.

UPDATED: NOV 4, 2014 I loved this beer when it first came out. This is by far my favorite style of beer. I do not know what happened to sierra Nevada. This as with all their IPA styles offers no flavor from the hops just the bitterness. The malt attempts to balance this but it just does not happen.

Firm lasting head. Fruity fragrance. Shallow aroma and restrained flavors but very overhopped. Not a balanced beer.
