A group of hop-heads and publicans challenged our Beer Camp (#19) brewers to push the extremes of whole-cone hop brewing. The result is this: a 100 IBU, whole-cone hurricane of flavor. Simply put- Hoptimum: the biggest whole-cone IPA we have ever produced. Aggressively hopped, dry-hopped and torpedoed with our exclusive new hop varieties for ultra-intense flavors and aromas.

Hops, hops and more hops are the stars of this big, whole-cone Imperial IPA. Resinous ‘new-school’ and exclusive hop varieties carry the bold and aromatic nose. The flavor follows the aroma with layers of aggressive hoppiness, featuring notes of grapefruit rind, rose, lilac, cedar and tropical fruit – all culminating in a dry and lasting finish.

An annual big IPA from Sierra Nevada, clicking in at 10.4% and 100 IBUs, this is another excellent, full-flavor offering. The whole cone hops make an explosive hop taste (seeming to be almost +100). The only thing I might ask for is a more expressive bouquet and hazier appearance--but those are personal preferences. A near perfect beer for the style. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Burnt orange pour. Aroma of tropical fruits and a little alcohol. Flavor starts bitter with the first few sips, but then becomes sweeter. Finish is bitter. Definitely an aggressively hopped beer. I had Ruination a few months back after not having it for about four years. The Ruination seemed a lot less aggressive than four years ago. This bottle of Hoptimum reminds me of how I felt Ruination used to taste.

Probably just better to read everyone elses reviews here. Lots of grapefruit, pine, big citrus flavours, slightly catty. Alcohol well hidden for such a big ipa. You already had it and loved it.

Great color, great nose. Piney, citrus hops dominates. Full bodied without overwhelming malt. Nice orange rind background. Hops n more hops. Not syrupy like most big ipas with an abv this high. Great beer!!!!

On draft at Maggie’s Attic. Amber colored with a thin white film on top. This is big and very hoppy; sharp and bitter. Juicy grapefruit, tropical fruity, and citrus rind flavors are joined by a touch of resin, unwelcomed perfume notes, floral notes, and some tangy alcohol. The malt bill is rather thick for balance, but also sweetens it up a little too much for my liking. This is pretty good but the alcohol isn’t hidden in this thing so it can become a chore to drink. More isn’t always better. While I’d get this again, I like some of Sierra Nevada’s regular IPAs better than this.

Wasn’t a fan. Looked good. Smelled more piny than fruity to me. More like a cleaner than anything. Taste was quite bitter and hoppy with piny flavors more so than fruitiness. Very resiny. Rich, syrupy body especially as it warmed and this beer just gave me a headache. Didn’t want to finish the last half and dumped it. One of the very rare beers of Sierra Nevada that I don’t like, as typically everything of theirs I enjoy. Maybe just changing tastes...

You taste a lot of different aspects of the hops in this one. Really enjoyable DIPA.

Bottle pour clear yellow with orange hue. Née of tropical and pine hop. Taste very bitter forward, rein, floral, and grassy hop. Mid palate malty sweetness and a long finish.

Fresh off the truck from the Biergarten. Thanks Freddy! 12oz. served into a snifter glass. A - Golden orange with a hefty white head that stays through the entire session. S - Wow! Smells very fresh, floral, leafy green, sweet grapefruit, pineapple, green pine resin, mild onion, T - Dense perfume hops, sweet mango, cantaloupe, tangarine, grapefruit, intense pine resin, all backed by candy like sweet malt. The finish is provides a ridiculously long bitter finish. M - Smooth thick feel with moderate creamy carbonation. If you like hops, this is your dream come true. I’ve had insanely hoppy beers in the past but none come close to pulling the aroma, bitterness, juicy flavor, and balanced malt that this perfect beer provides. As I rate this I find myself going back to every IIPA that I’ve tasted trying to find a better candidate...but I can’t. Serving type: bottle 05-03-2012
