COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A group of hop-heads and publicans challenged our Beer Camp (#19) brewers to push the extremes of whole-cone hop brewing. The result is this: a 100 IBU, whole-cone hurricane of flavor. Simply put- Hoptimum: the biggest whole-cone IPA we have ever produced. Aggressively hopped, dry-hopped and torpedoed with our exclusive new hop varieties for ultra-intense flavors and aromas.

Hops, hops and more hops are the stars of this big, whole-cone Imperial IPA. Resinous ‘new-school’ and exclusive hop varieties carry the bold and aromatic nose. The flavor follows the aroma with layers of aggressive hoppiness, featuring notes of grapefruit rind, rose, lilac, cedar and tropical fruit – all culminating in a dry and lasting finish.

Purchased at D&D Liquors in Chicago, IL; enjoyed at a friends place while bottling some of our homebrew. Appearance is a slightly light, semi-cloudy gold with a thin white head that rims around the glass. Aroma of pure hops, very piney with a bit of citrus, also a bit floral, smells pretty damn good. Taste is pretty damn hoppy, not a fierce bitter finish, but pretty potent. Large floral notes, can taste what whole cone hops taste like, also tastes potent from alcohol content. Great stuff, glad to have purchased.

Bottled sample via and shared with oakbluff. Gold in colour with medium carbonation. Aromas are of white grapefruit, weeds, and a whole lot of wood. Woody in the mouth as well, backed by pale malt, and mild tropical fruit. Quite bitter. Not bad, but this bottle was obviously a bit stale, so a re-rate at some point is definitely in order.

Bottle. A river of hops into the nose: manure, citrus, resinous. Deep clear golden-brown tea color, light tan 1-cm head with very tiny streams of slowing rising carbonation. Initial flavors are all hops, mid palate is hops with just a bit of malt to balance, and final is pure burning hop bitterness and alcohol. Aftertaste goes on and on; a real hop tattoo on the tongue. Medium-heavy body, somewhat chewy and sticky. A fun beer, to be sure, a sort of novelty. But, you know, they really did go a bit too far with this one. Can hoppiness become cloying? A sipping beer -- and I found that I didn’t really want more than half a bottle.

Bottle. Pours light hazy golden orange with a decent off white resilient head and lace. Aromas of evergreen hops, pine, citrusy resin over a nice sweet malt toffee and grains. Medium-full body, sweetness balancing the big hop bitterness - almost a bit too much sweet slickness, but nonetheless tasty. A lingering munich malt character lingers through the sweet oily finish among a nice big bitterness.

Pours copper-amber into the glass, with a frothy pock-marked eggshell head that reduces to a cap that leaves streaked soapy lacing. The nose is of floral, pine, alcohol and tin. Flavors are caramel, light biscuit, sopping pine resin and a twinge of astringent alcohol... but extremely well integrated. The finish is a peppered, boozy pine that lingers on the oily, slathering palate. The carbonation is perfectly active for a full-bodied offering such as this, without overtaking the mouthfeel and knocking the balance out of whack. A complex, oily, substantive brew here, and I completely love it.

A lot like Sierra Nevada’s Torpedo, but better. Lots of hops, grass, a little citrus, and heavy pine, over a malt base of caramel and some other flavors I’m not sure I can identfy. Overall, this is an excellent beer; Sierra Nevada prove themselves once again.

Pours gold with a big white billowing head. Orange, lemon, and earthy aromas. Citrus and resinous notes with big simcoe flavors balanced by a subtle malty sweetness. The finish is dry. Medium to high carbonation with a nice creamy mouthfeel. Goes down easy for such a bitter beer. The abv is well hidden. Solid IPA.

Don’t quite understand some of the low ratings here. You have to know what you’re getting into with this one. It is a pretty major hit on the taste buds though. Really nice super hopped up beer.

Now thats how you do an imperial ipa! It’s perfect. Strong bitterness, but totally not offensive and way drinkable!......WTG Sierra Nevada........
