COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A group of hop-heads and publicans challenged our Beer Camp (#19) brewers to push the extremes of whole-cone hop brewing. The result is this: a 100 IBU, whole-cone hurricane of flavor. Simply put- Hoptimum: the biggest whole-cone IPA we have ever produced. Aggressively hopped, dry-hopped and torpedoed with our exclusive new hop varieties for ultra-intense flavors and aromas.

Hops, hops and more hops are the stars of this big, whole-cone Imperial IPA. Resinous ‘new-school’ and exclusive hop varieties carry the bold and aromatic nose. The flavor follows the aroma with layers of aggressive hoppiness, featuring notes of grapefruit rind, rose, lilac, cedar and tropical fruit – all culminating in a dry and lasting finish.

Bomber bottle. bottle.... Pours orange/amber with moderate offwhite head, good retention and lacing, a little darker maybe than a typical IIPA. Great aroma, tropical fruit, resin, floral notes and a toffee/doughy malt sweetness. The taste is subtle as a sledgehammer - huge grapefruit/resin bitterness overwhelming just about everything else, though you do get a nice toffee note from the malt before the finish, which is also hugely bitter and lingering. best in small doses.

Pours orange amber with exceptional clarity. Thin head that fell fast, no real retention. Left some fine, soapy wet lace. Nose is spicy with some citrus. First thing you smell is yeast and it smells like a pils. Dank. I even thought to myself "Ooh this is gonna be good." Light caramel malt, tropical fruit. Oranges and grapefruit. Lots of alcohol on the nose. Earthy and a little grass. Taste is the definition of hop bomb. I have been saving the phrase and I choose to spend for the first time on this beer. Resiny, oily and bitter. The tropical qualities of the fruits are lost in the background. Piney, boozy, lots of alcohol on the palate. Not subtle, not hidden not masked. There is plenty of malt in this. Goes from light caramel to bread and honey as it warms and some sugar to top it off. Mouthfeel is sticky , heavy, chewy, plenty of alcohol and alcohol dryness with just a touch of sweetness from the malt and from the fruits to remind you that they were there. The malt saves this beer but the fact that so much of it is needed to balance all the hops means that it adds to the heaviness. It felt like the hops were thrown in for the mere sake of hops and there was no real complexity or fruity flavor. The bitter was tolerable but combined with the heaviness and the alcohol it was altogether unpleasant. It drank hard. Short on actual flavor.

12 oz bottle from Whole Foods This was new experience. The IPA poured a very clear golden color with a HUGE head. There was lacing. this is good looking ale. The aroma was moderately sweet with grapefruit and citrus. The higher alcohol may contribute to the sweeetness and pineapple like flavors. The Imperial IPA has a nice medium body and aveage carbonation. The finish has sweetness and a slight burn on the lips. It is excting that Sierra Nevada is coming East to Asheville , NC.

Nice bright gold translucent color with small off-white head and little lacing. Aroma and flavor are just all bitter hops with a light malty finish. Grapefruit and bitterness- not much else going on. Pretty simple hop bomb with a lot of alcohol.

Tried out of Bottle. Aroma was OK. Not exciting. Mouth feel was a little Heavy. I was hoping for a clean crisp beer. Taste was a bit malty but for a 10.4 I can’t complain. Hops seem to get lost. I would buy it again...mostly because I like the label.

UPDATED: MAY 23, 2013 on draft and it poured a golden orange almost copper color. minimal carbonation actually a soft carbonation. white head doesnt last long. solid aroma of hops that are mostly floral with citrus undertones. the one thing i like about this beer is that it was very smooth. had a decent bitterness on the tongue but didnt last long..almost a dry flavor. the flavor itself was very good and smooth. will have this one again.

The aroma is just fantastic and fresh. The flavors are great, extremely hoppy without being overbearing. Not oily at all. Bitter finish but not woody or overly piney. Best DIPA I have had to date and this is coming after visiting Three Floyds and having several of theirs.

Pours a hazy dark orange/copper with two fingers of white head and decent lacing. Pine and grapefruit aroma with some citrus and marmalade. Big grapefruit hop flavor with pine needle bitterness and resiny taste up front on palate. In the middle of the mouth you get some of the marmalade and malt sweetness followed by more grapefruit and citrus. Finishes dry with a lingering bitterness and warmth from the 10% ABV. Mouthfeel is just shy of being sticky with a moderate/full body and medium/high carbonation. A very well crafted DIPA that has lots of hop flavor and hardly any alcohol noticeable. Enjoyable but a sipper for sure.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a tulip. Bottled on March 19, 2013 per Julian date code printed on bottle. Appearance: Pours a clear medium gold with a 1-2 finger fluffy eggshell white head which dissipates slowly, leaving a ring around the edges and a pool of bubbles in the middle. Nice head retention and lacing. Smell: Excellent blend of hoppy goodness that features aromas of sweet citrus, grapefruit, pineapple, bready malt, a hint of pine and a touch of alcohol. Taste: Pine, floral hops and bitter citrus up front followed by bready malt and grassy hops in the middle before ending with a huge blast of bitter, resinous hops at the finish. Aftertaste is extremely bitter and long-lasting. The IBUs really come through while the alcohol is well masked. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied with a good amount of carbonation. Very smooth and the hop oils really coat the mouth. Drinkability: Very good drinkability. This doesn’t seem like a beer with 10.5% ABV. Overall: Excellent beer overall. This is a hophead’s dream. At 100 IBU, this one is very bitter - and I like it that way. If you like hoppy beers, this is a must try.
