COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Kellerweis is one of the only American Hefeweizens made using the traditional Bavarian style of open fermentation. This difficult and labor-intensive technique adds uncommon depth and flavor complexity. Our hazy-golden hefeweizen is deeply flavorful, refreshing and perfect for a sunny day. To serve, pour two-thirds into a glass, swirl and pour the rest.

Generally not a weizen drinker myself, but this is pretty nice. A good bit of wheat tang to it, some citrus and banana. Refreshing beer.

From a 12 oz bottle - pours a hazy golden color with a very thick, long standing foamy white head. Lots of lacing. Aroma of banana, spice, and yeast. Nice smooth taste of sweet banana, lemon, wheat and clove - much more of a German Hefeweizen than many of the American version but not overdone on the banana like some that try to be more German. Perfect balance.

UPDATED: DEC 7, 2009 Obscured lemon. Creamy stark-white froth displays good retention. Phenolic nose of plastic and clove, with subtler scents of dough, sulfur, dried pineapple and banana taffy. Soft, fine-bubbled carbonation. Thin and watery body. Initially spicy and arid with clove and sharp plastic notes, yet notably toasty as well. Not a whole lot of vibrancy to speak of, as the rampant toastiness creates a disagreeable tandem as it joins the overripe banana/banana taffy qualities. Though the body is fairly dry, dabs of baked apples exacerbate the dullness while contributing substantial flabbiness and weight. Decently layered in the malt department, as dry crackery malt overlaps the slicker and beefier wheat tang, but there is very little depth to speak of. Finishes clove-spicy and lightly floral, with dull banana notes lingering alongside hints of borderline astringent toasted grain and doughy yeast. Explosiveness as well as subtlety, cleanness and vibrancy (e.g. in this case the hop definition is poor, and the banana character is artificial/taffylike/overripe) are key elements that can make or break this style of beer. Sadly, it lacks all of those features. The wheat is also mushy and the beer is tainted by sulfur notes. Love the open-fermentation approach they took, but I can’t say I am impressed. Was so hoping to love this as one thing the world is lacking is reliably fresh, well-crafted weissbier. Bummer.

UPDATED: AUG 14, 2012 Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a hazy bright golden color with a large yellow-white head. The aroma was dryish, wheaty and had notes of clove and bubblegum. The flavor was dryish, musty and wheaty with light elements of clove, banana and bubblegum. The finish was short, tangy and sweetish. Fairly full bodied. Good.

I’ve had this beer a few times now, usually after some yard or house work, but it’s such a nice refreshing summer beer I haven’t bothered with a rate until now. Hazy yellow-gold, big fluffy head with some pretty nice staying power. Wheaty, malty, with the right amount of banana, clove and citrus flavors. A light spice mingles in nicely. A touch sticky. Nice beer, one of the better Hefe’s I’ve had. Sierra Nevada seldom lets down.

12 oz bottle. Pours a cloudy yellowish gold with a large linen white head that lasted until the last sip and left very light lace. Pleasant aroma of wheat, sour lemon and cloves. The flavor is almost exactly the same as the aroma with wheat, sour lemon and a bit of clove. Fairly velvety mouthfeel. Very refreshing beer.

Bottled sample shared with oakbluff. Gold in colour with a bit of haze and strong carbonation. Aromas are of mild banana, green (somewhat minty) hops, vanilla, and a bit of bubblegum. The banana elements take on an additional citrus complexity in the mouth, along with more soapy Thrills bubblegum and a bit of clove and hops. Light bodied and refreshing.

UPDATED: JAN 10, 2013 12oz Bottle. The Pour was a hazy amber yellow with an average (1-2 finger) white foamy head that lasted throughout and produced fair streaky lacing. The aroma was a light grain malt and a mild doughy yeast with notes of banana, citrus (lemon), a bit of coriander and a hint of vanilla. The taste was slightly bitter and rather yeasty with a hint of citrus pretty much throughout, with the finish having a slight spiciness towards the end. The flavor was short lived with a mild citrusy yeast taste fading quickly from the taste buds. Mouthfeel was light in body with a thin creamy texture and a medium carbonation. Overall this was a really good Hefeweizen, with a nice creamy yeasty taste and a good drinkability. This is a brew that I will definitely drink again, especially on one of those extremely hot summer days...

Bottle, gave a cloudy sandy-orange pour with a white fluffy head, glass of beer reminds me of a creamsicle, left some nice lacing on the sides of the glass, aromas of ripe banana sweetness, lemon and orange citrus, wheat, faint spice and bazooka gum fragrances in the background, flavors are similar to the aromas, creamy mouth feel, a nice and easy drinking beer.
