| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 9, 2009 Sierra Nevada has graced us with not one but two new beers this year, although getting my hands on, much less keeping their Torpedo IIPA in stock is proving to be a feat of magic and miracles. On the other hand, their Kellerweisse Hefeweizen is much easier to find and just as delicious to sup. While I laud the Torpedo for its exuberant yummyness, I also chastise it for its lack of availability. That’s alright though; it is a temporary issue which will eventually be resolved. Hopefully. In the meantime, I am going to sup on many a 6pack of Kellerweisse Hefeweizen. Sierra Nevada finally got a wheat beer right. Even better, it’s a bottle-conditioned Hefeweizen which guarantees a longer shelf life and some maturation with age.
Clouds of orangesicle, yellow cream, and white marshmallow puffs fill my glass with rich beauty; truly a work of art. Her white head floats suspended, lazing about with nonchalant lessez-faire while I make sure to swirl the bottle dregs into my glass. The dregs WILL be mine! As I pour the last of her luscious chunky bits into my glass, a billowing bouquet of bananas, banana cream, banana bread warm from the oven with nuts aromatizing the air while spices and clove tease my senses. Amazingly smooth, creamy, and bursting with all the hefeweizen esters I love so much. A touch of toasted meringue and I am on to quaffing bliss. Just as her nose promised, the mouthfeel is also smooth, creamy, and boldly going where many beers before her have gone. Gliding over my tastebuds, banana cream lays next to banana pudding while I slice into a huge chunk of warm banana nut bread exuding cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove. Real butter is really good so of course I slather a generous amount over my banana bread which melts into the Kellerweisse Hefeweizen’s gorgeous palate. My breath is warm with clove and spice while toasted nuts lightly dry my palate just in time for another generous quaff. She is gentle as silk, belying her lightly chewy mouthfeel. As she grows just a touch drier, the palate evolves from banana bread warm from the oven to dry banana bread mix. Exquisite balance. Each quaff is traced by beautifully creamy lace and far sooner than expected, my glass is empty. Good thing I have more in my fridge because I feel a second coming.
German Hefeweizens are a love-hate relationship for many. I, of course, fall amongst the love ‘em camp. Great year round, they especially shine in the warmer muggy months where the sun shows no mercy and the skies are an endless deep blue sea. Excellent job, Sierra Nevada. A true German-style Hefeweizen, she is a proud new addition to a long established family of good beers.

The flavor is also wheat, this is a Hefe you DO NOT have to put fruit in. Hands down the best American crafted Hefe I have ever had. garrison (464), Cin. city, Ohio, USA

Tastewise, it’s good, but not as body strong as the German hefeweizens! RickTStiles (65), New York, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Jan 2, 2010 Pours hazy yellow with thick white head and excellent lacing. Yeast dominates the aroma with some dampness and a hint of cleaning fluid. Lots of bright cirtus and flowers in the body. Light banana in the finish. Solid hefeweizen that goes down easier (and faster!) than most. Naka (528), Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 2, 2010 Pours hazy amber golden with a small and quickly disappearing chalk-white head. Aroma has a heavy sweetness of bananas foster and clove. A noticeable bitter note as well. The flavors is a nice spicy hefe with the obvious clove, but also some ginger and slight hint of lemon. A balancing bitterness to it that is pretty floral. There is a lot of good body to this beer. Very enjoyable. weihenweizen (73), West Virginia, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jan 2, 2010 Refrigerated bottle poured into a weizen glass. Pours a hazy golden color with a white head. The taste is nicely balanced by clove and banana. Taste is really good except a little sour in the aftertaste. Good beer. Duhast500 (226), , Massachusetts, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jan 2, 2010 Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a wheat glass.
The color is a hazy orange with a slight yellowish hue. about two fingers of white foamy head and some nice lacing.
The smell is slightly fruity with a hint of bananas and some slight citrus flavors.
The taste is sweet with some wheat flavor mixed with some clove and citrus flavors. There is a bit of tangy flavor in the background that is ever so slight but give this beer a great fruit flavor that remains for a bit.
The feel of this beer is pretty light and goes down easy. Is one of the better beers I’ve had in the lower ABV range. This may be my new session beer.

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jan 1, 2010 While Kellerweis isn’t the best hefeweizen in the world, it’s much, much better than your average bland American pale wheat nonsense and actually comparable to German greats, like the Ayinger and Weihenstephaner, in my opinion. The beer pours cloudy and golden banana in color. The nose has a lot of good banana flavor. It could probably use a bit more of that rich, spicy wheat flavor of the best German versions, but it’s still quite good. I’ve been told that SN got the yeast strain from a small German brewery, and it certainly has the notes of an authentic German hefe yeast. The flavor is a tad sweet, but it dries out nicely in the finish. I was nervous about this beer when it was announced, but SN has put out what is probably the best widely available American wheat beer. votzer (8), Hixson, Tennessee, USA does not count | 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Jan 1, 2010 Nice head, hazy yellow appearance. Smooth easy to like taste. Enjoyed this one.
