COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Barrel-Aged Narwhal is our deliciously dark Imperial Stout aged in Kentucky bourbon barrels. Barrel aging is a strange science; it mellows some characteristics of the original beer while intensifying others. Narwhal’s aggressive roastiness has calmed, but the rich, chocolate-like malt backbone is brought to the fore. Black as midnight, this intense stout is complex with notes of cocoa and espresso balanced with hints of vanilla and toasted coconut from the oak casks. Nearly as rare as it’s nautical namesake, try Barrel-Aged Narwhal while you can because like the creature itself, it will soon dive into the depths and leave nary a trace behind.

C&C 750 mL bottle from Beer Run. Huge thanks to OldGrowth whose forum thread made me realize I was at 99 Sierra Nevada ratings and had this gem sitting in the cellar, a perfect choice for #100! Near black, medium dark brown head, decent retention. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, bourbon, oak, earth. The taste is dark fruits, roasted malts, bourbon, vanilla, oak, dark chocolate. Medium-full bodied, low carbonation, fairly hot. Solid beer, yay for 100 Sierra Nevada ratings! And oh shit, 10.5K to boot!

Bomber. Killer beer. Jet black pour with a beige head. Sweet boozy woody aroma and taste. Marshmallow and bourbon. This is excellent.

2014 bottle. Like the original but some age and barrel have done this one right. Vanilla, barrel, lovely chocolate, hints of marshmellow, hints of dark ripe fruits, coffee. Real nice!

Bottle shared during the Cad’s 10th anniversary bash - Clerkenwell, London. Picked up in a trade! Pours oily black with a creamy tan head. The nose holds good charred malts, dark chocolate, raisins. Medium to big sweet flavor with some oily chocolate, light vanilla, subtle earthy bitterness, some figs, dates. Full bodied with fine carbonation and creamy texture. Lightly warming to finish, with rich chocolate character, some oily chocolate, more vanilla, subtle dark fruits. Good depth, great balance. Sierra Nevada showing how it’s done.

I love the narwhal but the BA narwhal is sensational. Bourbon and Oak take over as the heroes, however, the chocolate, coffee and bitterness still play a great role in balancing everything. Pours a very dark brown with thin beige head. Loads of vanilla, whisky, earth, coconut and slight choc on the nose. Mouth feel is super smooth with flavours of vanilla, earth, light hops before chocolate and coffee and finished with a lingering ’scotch’ warmth that carries everything that little bit further. Seriously loved this and couldn’t think of a better accompaniment for a steak.
