COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Barrel-Aged Narwhal is our deliciously dark Imperial Stout aged in Kentucky bourbon barrels. Barrel aging is a strange science; it mellows some characteristics of the original beer while intensifying others. Narwhalís aggressive roastiness has calmed, but the rich, chocolate-like malt backbone is brought to the fore. Black as midnight, this intense stout is complex with notes of cocoa and espresso balanced with hints of vanilla and toasted coconut from the oak casks. Nearly as rare as itís nautical namesake, try Barrel-Aged Narwhal while you can because like the creature itself, it will soon dive into the depths and leave nary a trace behind.

I really like regular Narwhal, so naturally, barrel-aged narwhal is that much better. Take an already well-rounded imperial stout, add some bourbon and some wood, and you get an even more well-rounded imperial stout.

Poured from a 750 ml bottle into a chalice on 05.22.15. A: Cocoa, bourbon, brown sugar, milk chocolate, oaky woodiness, and fig. A: 1 finger tan head that recedes to a ring and fluff. Midnight black body with some red on the sides of the glass. T: Milk chocolate, bourbon, nuttiness (back end), and coconut dominate. Cherry (back end), oak, fig, and vanilla are subtle. P: Very smooth and light in the mouth. Itís syrupy but not heavy. O: It does not feel like 12.9% going down. Itís so silky smooth. Itís a very enjoyable, complex, but balanced treat.

750 ml bottle into snifter, bottled on 10/16/2014. Pours dense pitch black color with a 1-2 finger dense dark tan head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, caramel, toffee, toast, vanilla, coconut, bourbon, oak, light dark fruit, light butterscotch, and roast/oaky earthiness. Incredible aromas with awesome complexity and balance of dark/roasted malt and bourbon barrel notes; with good strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, caramel, toffee, toast, vanilla, coconut, bourbon, oak, light dark fruit, light butterscotch, and roast/oaky earthiness. Light herbal/roast/oaky bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, caramel, toffee, toast, vanilla, coconut, bourbon, oak, and roast/oaky earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity and robustness of dark/roasted malt and bourbon barrel flavors; with an insane malt/barrel balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and full bodied; with a very smooth, creamy, silky, and lightly slick mouthfeel that in incredible. Alcohol is extremely well hidden with only a slight alcohol warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is a world class barrel aged imperial stout. All around insane complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roasted malt and bourbon barrel flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the huge ABV. A truly mind blowing offering.

Not much head, still-looking. Black-brown and syrupy. Very sweet, rich, deep aroma: toffee, toasted coconut, nougat, maple, vanilla. Very smooth flavor. Just a slight whiskey harshness and green oak note in front is smoothed at swallow by sweet toffee, toasty oak, chocolate and butterscotch. Tongue-numbing, oily medium body. Deeelish.

Pours coal black with a two fingers of a thick, tan head. The nose is chocolate, coffee, vanilla, oak and booze. The taste is consistent with best BA Stouts: complex with strong notes of coffee, chocolate, oak, and subtle vanilla booziness. its a perfect dessert.

Dark mahogany pour with a mocha head that left a decent amount of lacing inside of the glass. Espresso, vanilla bean, oak, bourbon, and brownie. The alcohol is a bit aggressive and overpowering. Although the individual components sound delicious and decadent, they donít elevate one another. Good but not great.
