Barrel-Aged Narwhal is our deliciously dark Imperial Stout aged in Kentucky bourbon barrels. Barrel aging is a strange science; it mellows some characteristics of the original beer while intensifying others. Narwhal’s aggressive roastiness has calmed, but the rich, chocolate-like malt backbone is brought to the fore. Black as midnight, this intense stout is complex with notes of cocoa and espresso balanced with hints of vanilla and toasted coconut from the oak casks. Nearly as rare as it’s nautical namesake, try Barrel-Aged Narwhal while you can because like the creature itself, it will soon dive into the depths and leave nary a trace behind.

Deep black pour with really attractive creamy tan head that lasts quite a while. Prominent aromas of oak, bourbon, molasses, espresso, chocolate, cherry. Decadent flavours - rich chocolate, port wine, coffee roastiness and bitterness, oak tannins, some vanilla. Full bodied and really smooth, creamy and oily. Fantastic barrel aged imperial stout, so sinful but feels so right.

How: Bottle (750 ml) at Mont-Carmel tasting. Bought at Craft Beer Cellar Waterbury.

>>> A good but hot barrel-aged RIS like so many other. Enjoyable when you don’t think about the price tag.

- Black with a small brown head and little lacing.
- Main flavors are bourbon and roasted malts.
- There’s a nice red fruits / red wine presence that add some complexity.
- It’s a bit hot, alcohol is more present than I expected. Not to the point of being problematic (Bruery-like) though.
- Body is full, carbonation is moderate, mouthfeel is chalky and finish is warming.

Flavors: Bourbon, alcohol, roasted malts, red fruits, caramel, mild spiciness.

Pours a good black with a light beige rim that leaves some lacing. Nose is of bourbon, light licorice and vanilla. Taste is of chocolate, alcohol, slight dark fruits and pretty bitter. Moderately sweet. Body is full, carbonation moderate and the alcohol is a bit hot. Overall a pretty good but not exceptionnal american imperial stout. Way too boozy, though.

pours unclear very dark brown, orange-mahogany tint, with a reviving light beige cap, nice lacing. bourbony roasted maltiness, ice red wine, minty yet soft resin, coconut. light to low carbonation, medium-full body - oily; warming and spicy-bourbony finish. very good. as good as tawny version - and still far - in a good way - from fresh (harsh) narwhal.
