COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Barrel-Aged Narwhal is our deliciously dark Imperial Stout aged in Kentucky bourbon barrels. Barrel aging is a strange science; it mellows some characteristics of the original beer while intensifying others. Narwhal’s aggressive roastiness has calmed, but the rich, chocolate-like malt backbone is brought to the fore. Black as midnight, this intense stout is complex with notes of cocoa and espresso balanced with hints of vanilla and toasted coconut from the oak casks. Nearly as rare as it’s nautical namesake, try Barrel-Aged Narwhal while you can because like the creature itself, it will soon dive into the depths and leave nary a trace behind.

Pour out of 750 mL bottle, thick black pour with caramel colored head, aroma brought notes of nice dark fruit, molasses, and dark chocolate into a nice oaky, vanilla and bourbon note, some slight roasted malt, touch of yeasty spice as well. Taste is nice dark fruit, molasses, some caramel into big cocoa powder, bitter cocoa into some coffee, nice vanilla and oak come through, finishing fairly sweet, slightly bitter. Nice carb level and mouthfeel. Very well done, they kept the base beer, which I love, prevalent in the beer and highlighted some bourbon into it.

Bottle at home with my dad. Pour is pitch black with a small tan head and great lacing. Sweet cocoa, roasty, light vanilla, some booze, toffee, caramel, a hint of wood, and earthiness in the aroma. Taste is big coconut, dark chocolate, woody, a hint of vanilla, toffee, and graham crackers with a touch of alcohol on the backend. Slick mouthfeel with medium carbonation. A little boozy but still tasty.

Poured from 750ml bottle, pours black with a fast dissipating brown head, aromanhas a decent amount of vanilla at first mixed in with a kick of bourbon and chocolate, the flavor has a chocolate front end with a slight kick of booze in the finish, a little sweet and hot in the finish, leaves your mouth dry, actually kind of just meh, really expected more.

750mL bottle, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma brings out toasted coconut and vanilla upfront, followed by chocolate and medium bourbon. Flavour is very complex, with notes of bourbon barrels, vanilla and chocolate. Wonderfully cohesive -- the bourbon barrels are used very well, transforming the base beer from great to excellent. Lots more dimensions to this. Excellent.

Bottle gift from Shawn Robinson. Nice notes of roasted malt, chocolate, vanilla, wood and roast. As the brew warmed, the chocolate and wood become very dominant. Very good.

Bottle from the Bier Stein, Eugene. Pours a rich, dark, velvety black/brown, little to no tan head. Aroma cacao, dark chocolate, oak, vanilla. Body rich and roasty, with just a hint of warming and nutty bitterness. Well-balanced, and well done.
