COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Barrel-Aged Narwhal is our deliciously dark Imperial Stout aged in Kentucky bourbon barrels. Barrel aging is a strange science; it mellows some characteristics of the original beer while intensifying others. Narwhal’s aggressive roastiness has calmed, but the rich, chocolate-like malt backbone is brought to the fore. Black as midnight, this intense stout is complex with notes of cocoa and espresso balanced with hints of vanilla and toasted coconut from the oak casks. Nearly as rare as it’s nautical namesake, try Barrel-Aged Narwhal while you can because like the creature itself, it will soon dive into the depths and leave nary a trace behind.

Pitch, oily pour, khaki head. Vinous, sherry/port aroma over roast. Sweet, boozy, raisinettes. Pretty smooth, though you know the ABV is there. It’s warming like wine. Chocolate notes in the aftertaste, cake dough at the very end. Sweetness clings a bit too long. On tap, Brass Tap, Tallahassee.

Bottle shared by Michael at the Pig. Pours a very deep brown with small mocha head. The pronounced aroma is dark fruits, deep rich malts, dark chocolate cocoa nibs, roasted nuts, and some coffee. Taste is dark chocolate and coffee first chased by a hint of caramel and vanilla. Thick, medium to full body. Ending is cocoa and marshmallow with a barrel boozeness.

Thanks Bob! Rich black pour with a mocha brown head. Aroma is roasted malt, bourbon, cocoa. Taste is cocoa, bourbon, chalky, light roasted malt, hints of vanilla, and oaky dryness in the finish. It is a different monster than the regular narwhal. I did a side by side after rating in my notebook. BA is so much creamier. Both are fantastic, but the BA is so much tastier and more complex. Great lacing.

Fairly dark color with smattering of khaki head. Smell of roasted malt dominates, some musty oak, bourbon. Taste is a roasty charred hop with coffee, chocolate, cigarette ash. Barrel is pronounced, strong smell, vanilla flavors. Good solid barrel aged stout, does its job well. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

750 ml. Pour is opaque ebony and has an enduring disc of creamy espresso foam on top. Nose of dark chocolate, anise, dark toast, lightly soured figs and red wine. Mouthfeel is silky smooth with low-medium carbonation and a soft, but hefty body. Great balance with no stickiness and just a nice touch of the big abv. Flavors of semi-sweet chocolate, toasted oak, whiskey, vanilla and coffee. There are definitely more complex and flavorful Imperials out there, but this one is well constructed. Dangerously smooth and drinkable for the biggetiness of the abv.

Pours a perfectly dark black color with a thin but decent head. Aroma is cocoa, bitter, chocolate, bread, yeast, bourbon, licorice, stone fruit, malt, and a hugely thick molasses note with caramel. Taste is much the same, notes of chocolate, bourbon, caramel, bitter, huge vanilla, booze, coffee, huge bread. Overall a great beer, love this one aged on Maker’s. Worth grabbing a couple if possible, one for now, one for aging.

Black, huge beige head. Smells really nice, bourbon and coffee, some vanill and chocolate, too. Taste is oaky with going overboard. Some vanila, some red wine. Very smooth.

750 ML Via trade in Hawaii Pours dark cola color, settles jet black. Dark leather head that slowly falls away to a decent collar. Good retention, good ABV legs. Nose is slightly hot (alcohol), chocolate, prune, vanilla, toasted coconut, and roasted malts. Some tar in this as well. A little hot in the mouth. Alcohol pretty evident. Chocolate fudge, vanilla, oak, caramel, roasted malts. Slick and oily. Full bodied BA RIS. May need a bit of time to cool down. Not as much barrel character as I like. More of the RIS side of the beer. Solid either way
