Barrel-Aged Narwhal is our deliciously dark Imperial Stout aged in Kentucky bourbon barrels. Barrel aging is a strange science; it mellows some characteristics of the original beer while intensifying others. Narwhal’s aggressive roastiness has calmed, but the rich, chocolate-like malt backbone is brought to the fore. Black as midnight, this intense stout is complex with notes of cocoa and espresso balanced with hints of vanilla and toasted coconut from the oak casks. Nearly as rare as it’s nautical namesake, try Barrel-Aged Narwhal while you can because like the creature itself, it will soon dive into the depths and leave nary a trace behind.

750 ml bottle, 2015 vintage.
Black, with a tan head, that dissipates without much lace.
Aroma is chocolate, vanilla, oak, bourbon.
Flavor is on the sweet side, creamy chocolate, sweetened coffee, vanilla, bourbon, with some toasty oak dryness that keeps it from getting sideways.
Mouth-feel is smooth and creamy, carbonation is soft. Never gets boozy despite the high abv.

Hazy sepia, thin cream head. Spicy nose, woody and peppery with cognac hints. Sticky sugar front palate, boozy with oxidation stick mid, way disappointing compared to the nose.

Bottle, shared with company. Not as dark or viscous as the regular Narwhal, with a boozier character with lots of bourbon in equal proportion to the dark malts. Nice, but I prefer the non-bourbonized version I think.

Sampled at Great American Beer Festival 9/24/15. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, vanilla, oak, toasted grain and light coconut. Similar flavor. Full bodied, smooth and complex. Pretty nice overall.

Deep black pour with really attractive creamy tan head that lasts quite a while. Prominent aromas of oak, bourbon, molasses, espresso, chocolate, cherry. Decadent flavours - rich chocolate, port wine, coffee roastiness and bitterness, oak tannins, some vanilla. Full bodied and really smooth, creamy and oily. Fantastic barrel aged imperial stout, so sinful but feels so right.

How: Bottle (750 ml) at Mont-Carmel tasting. Bought at Craft Beer Cellar Waterbury.

>>> A good but hot barrel-aged RIS like so many other. Enjoyable when you don’t think about the price tag.

- Black with a small brown head and little lacing.
- Main flavors are bourbon and roasted malts.
- There’s a nice red fruits / red wine presence that add some complexity.
- It’s a bit hot, alcohol is more present than I expected. Not to the point of being problematic (Bruery-like) though.
- Body is full, carbonation is moderate, mouthfeel is chalky and finish is warming.

Flavors: Bourbon, alcohol, roasted malts, red fruits, caramel, mild spiciness.
