COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Barrel-Aged Narwhal is our deliciously dark Imperial Stout aged in Kentucky bourbon barrels. Barrel aging is a strange science; it mellows some characteristics of the original beer while intensifying others. Narwhal’s aggressive roastiness has calmed, but the rich, chocolate-like malt backbone is brought to the fore. Black as midnight, this intense stout is complex with notes of cocoa and espresso balanced with hints of vanilla and toasted coconut from the oak casks. Nearly as rare as it’s nautical namesake, try Barrel-Aged Narwhal while you can because like the creature itself, it will soon dive into the depths and leave nary a trace behind.

UPDATED: APR 21, 2016 12 oz bottle. Pours a thick, oily black with a pencil thin chestnut colored head. Aromas of dark chocolate, dried figs, alcohol, and some floral notes. Chocolate, walnuts, black cherry, coffee, bourbon. A little booziness that fits right in. Thick and sticky, velvety.

Humongous from go to whoa - choc vanilla coconut roasted malt - super syrupy - very very rich - too much so - hard to finish my glass - thankfully shared the bottle! Definitely sensory overload - enjoyed but more is not necessarily better.

Pours deep black into a snifter. Mocha head with excellent retention recedes to coat surface. Chocolate, bourbon and espresso aromas. Thick with vanilla and hot chocolate upfront turning to dark caramel and bourbon burn

Pours a deep dark brown color. Small tan head head that lasted throughout. Aromas of bourbon and wood. Flavor was a lot of bourbon, hints of smoke, chocolate. Full bodied and creamy. Tasted more bourbon than beer. WOW, this is a flavorful beer!!

My first bourbon barrel aged beer. I felt the bourbon overwhelm the expected flavors of chocolate and coffee you expect from a stout. That being said it was pretty smooth with minimal alcohol taste and the bourbon comes through loud and clear. An intense and fun beer to try at the NC brewery at the end of an awesome brewery tour. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

A: Pitch black with a nougat coloured head that goes away quite fast. N: Vanilla, coffee, cocoa, some fruityness to it as well. T: Vanilla, coffee, chocolate, bourbon O: Not as heavy as expected. Some heat from alcohol. Nice balance between sweetness and tart hint. Light bitterness as well. Very nice even though I could enjoy even more barrel aging.

Aroma has cork cardboard barrel scents up front with not much richness showing. Taste is bitter soy cork cardboard with hints of coffee mocha marshmallow bakers chocolate. Pours jet black with coffee crema head. Thick and oily looking. Nose is dark roast and burnt malts, lots of oak, some some light vanilla. Good carbonation. Taste is mostly dry with some wood tannin drying the tongue as well. Flavors of dark bitter malts, sweet barrel notes, and a long oaky finish.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a large dark brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of nice dark chocolate notes with some bourbon and vanilla notes. Taste is a great mix of black chocolate notes with some roasted malt notes and some bourbon notes and vanilla. Body is full with good carbonation with some light warming notes of alcohol. Not bad but I was expecting even more complexity.
