Barrel-Aged Narwhal is our deliciously dark Imperial Stout aged in Kentucky bourbon barrels. Barrel aging is a strange science; it mellows some characteristics of the original beer while intensifying others. Narwhal’s aggressive roastiness has calmed, but the rich, chocolate-like malt backbone is brought to the fore. Black as midnight, this intense stout is complex with notes of cocoa and espresso balanced with hints of vanilla and toasted coconut from the oak casks. Nearly as rare as it’s nautical namesake, try Barrel-Aged Narwhal while you can because like the creature itself, it will soon dive into the depths and leave nary a trace behind.

I love the narwhal but the BA narwhal is sensational. Bourbon and Oak take over as the heroes, however, the chocolate, coffee and bitterness still play a great role in balancing everything. Pours a very dark brown with thin beige head. Loads of vanilla, whisky, earth, coconut and slight choc on the nose. Mouth feel is super smooth with flavours of vanilla, earth, light hops before chocolate and coffee and finished with a lingering ’scotch’ warmth that carries everything that little bit further. Seriously loved this and couldn’t think of a better accompaniment for a steak.

Good roasted malts, chocolate and some vanilla and coconut inside. Good brew for sure. The booze is nothing overwhelming. Good balanced.

Pours totally black with a brown head. Aroma is malt, roasty, chocolate, coffee, caramel, plenty of oak with hints of dark fruit and bourbon. Taste is medium to high sweet leading to a oaky and roasty finish. Fantastic!

Bottle sampled at ZEBF ’15. Pours near black with a small tan head. Aroma of roast, malt, dark chocolate and light barrel notes. Flavour is over moderate sweet and bitter with more barrel and vanilla coming out in the palate. Medium to full bodied with soft carbonation.

Bottle from my bro. Pours a thick looking black. Small light tan head. Aromas of chocolate marshmallow, oak, bourbon. Taste is semi sweet and only lightly bitter. Flavors of roasted barrel, vanilla, chocolate, light coffee. Finish is Demi sec with lingering notes of barrel and light dill. Decent, not mind blowing.

Pitch black with a mocha colored head. Nose is coffee, chocolate, vanilla. Flavor is so much vanilla, bourbon, chocolate, coffee. Long, complex, incredibly unbelievable, thick, rich, like chocolate cake. Blowing my mind. Phenomenal.
