COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Barrel-Aged Narwhal is our deliciously dark Imperial Stout aged in Kentucky bourbon barrels. Barrel aging is a strange science; it mellows some characteristics of the original beer while intensifying others. Narwhal’s aggressive roastiness has calmed, but the rich, chocolate-like malt backbone is brought to the fore. Black as midnight, this intense stout is complex with notes of cocoa and espresso balanced with hints of vanilla and toasted coconut from the oak casks. Nearly as rare as it’s nautical namesake, try Barrel-Aged Narwhal while you can because like the creature itself, it will soon dive into the depths and leave nary a trace behind.

This is my kind of beer. Pours a completely opaque black eith a dense tan head. The nose is heavy and robust with huge espresso and chocolate notes, a pinch of anise and a ton of rich, woody barrel emphasis. Rich bourbon and woody roasted notes. Sweet up front with roasted espresso and anise, light vanilla. The finish is woody and lightly bitter with roasted malts. Barrel notes are perfectly done and linger in the aftertaste.

tmoreau (3421) - Lombard, Illinois, USA - FEB 19, 2016
Shared 2015, 750 ml. bottle poured to snifters, showing a black/brown hue, with a presentable layer of tan head foam, and wavy cling to the lacing. The nose was medium roast, with mocha notes, light maltiness, and barrel induced vanilla & coconut that assisted in tempering the roasted nature. Medium+ bodied, with fair carbonation, the taste was similar, added a roasted & earthy bitterness, and pleasant, bourbony warmth.

750mL of 2014 pours a dark brown/black with a medium tan head. Aroma of bright barrel sweetness, oaky vanilla and whiskey, sweet undertones of chocolate and molasses. Texture is slick and sweet, moderate oaky vanilla and whiskey, well balanced with slightly more dry chocolate and molasses, light leather, coconut and marshmellow and a light alcohol and bitterness on the finish. Nice approachable balance.

Bottled, trade with Benzai, thanks! Opaque black appearance, brownish head. Powerful nose of roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, vanilla, wood, some licorice, alcohol. Very complex flavor, sweetness and bitterness, roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, vanilla, wood, alcohol, very boozy. Lasting bittersweet finish. Very powerful, complex, and balanced imperial stout. A little bit too boozy for me, but nevertheless very good.

(Bottle, 0.75 l, at tiong’s tasting, thanks tiong, 20160109) The beer poured black. Its head was medium sized and lightly brown. Aroma had wood, vineousness and vanilla. Palate was full bodied and warming with low carbonation. Flavours were vanilla, booze, wood, sweetness and burnt malts. Aftertaste was woody and burnt. The wood was bit overdone.
