COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Barrel-Aged Narwhal is our deliciously dark Imperial Stout aged in Kentucky bourbon barrels. Barrel aging is a strange science; it mellows some characteristics of the original beer while intensifying others. Narwhal’s aggressive roastiness has calmed, but the rich, chocolate-like malt backbone is brought to the fore. Black as midnight, this intense stout is complex with notes of cocoa and espresso balanced with hints of vanilla and toasted coconut from the oak casks. Nearly as rare as it’s nautical namesake, try Barrel-Aged Narwhal while you can because like the creature itself, it will soon dive into the depths and leave nary a trace behind.

Pours jet black with coffee crema head. Thick and oily looking. Nose is dark roast and burnt malts, lots of oak, some some light vanilla. Good carbonation. Taste is mostly dry with some wood tannin drying the tongue as well. Flavors of dark bitter malts, sweet barrel notes, and a long oaky finish.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a large dark brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of nice dark chocolate notes with some bourbon and vanilla notes. Taste is a great mix of black chocolate notes with some roasted malt notes and some bourbon notes and vanilla. Body is full with good carbonation with some light warming notes of alcohol. Not bad but I was expecting even more complexity.

2015 edition, poured into a snifter. Pours deep ink-black, completely opaque, with a 1-finger dark tan head. Aroma of oak with touches of bourbon and chocolate. Body is medium-to-full, just slightly oily. The ABV is impressively well-controlled, with no real booziness at all and just a touch of astringency to the finish. Flavor of chocolate mixed with caramel-sweet bourbon and a touch of char underneath. A note of coconut appears as it warms.

750 ml bottle from Systembolaget. Pitch-black with a medium brown head. Aroma of roasted malt, whiskey, dark chocolate, coffee, licorice and alcohol. Taste reflects the aroma, but more oak. Medium to full-bodied. Medium bitterness. And low carbonation.

One of the better bourbon barrel aged stouts I have tried. Glad I picked it up when I found it. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

750 ml Bottle. 2014 bottle, pretty much aged to perfection. Full head that died to a thin lasting ring of tan head. Aroma is mild lasting bourbon on top of chocolate, roasted espresso beans, vanilla hints.

Oh dear god! This is awesome. Flavor follows the aroma, great mouthfeel. Screw a long winded review. This is a quality imperial stout if you haven’t already sampled it, find a bottle.

2015 bottle. This was poured into a snifter. The appearance was a dark brown close to black color with a thin glaze of a little head. Seemingly collared lacing here and there. The smell starts off with the sweet bourbon over a big roasty blissful coffee bean. Delicate cocoa bean underneath. The taste replicates the smell nicely. Bourbon boozy sweetness slides into the aftertaste. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a great sipping quality about it. Cabonation has pretty much died off (hmmm...that was kinda quick considering that this was only a 2015 bottle, yeah well). Overall, barrel aged imperial stout, damn, this is really nice. SN did a stellar job with this one. I’d have again, maybe I just had at the right time.

Basically liquid bourbon barrel. The roastiness is coal, burned wood and tobacco. Quite dry and bitter. Sweetness is medium. It has a very long finish with bourbon biting on the end. But all that is dominated by bourbon, vanilla, cocoa and wood notes. Serious BA beer.

Bottle@home, from Wine Spot, Cleveland, USA. Strong aroma of licorice, bourbon and some cocoa. Pitch black color with small beige head. Strong balanced taste of licorice, roasted malts, and some vanilla and cocoa. Bourbon nicely on the background. Wide taste spectrum and long aftertaste with slightly roasted malts and licorice. Strong body with light carbonation. Overall, high quality with bourbon implemented quite well. Could have bit more complexity.

Thanks to !like for sharing. Black, medium carbonation for the style. Booze aroma with whiskey. Heavily roasted and burnt grain. Rich palate. This is sold in 750 bottles, and that is too much for one person.
