Barrel-Aged Narwhal is our deliciously dark Imperial Stout aged in Kentucky bourbon barrels. Barrel aging is a strange science; it mellows some characteristics of the original beer while intensifying others. Narwhal’s aggressive roastiness has calmed, but the rich, chocolate-like malt backbone is brought to the fore. Black as midnight, this intense stout is complex with notes of cocoa and espresso balanced with hints of vanilla and toasted coconut from the oak casks. Nearly as rare as it’s nautical namesake, try Barrel-Aged Narwhal while you can because like the creature itself, it will soon dive into the depths and leave nary a trace behind.

750ml bottle, thanks Sami!

Pours pitch black with a small head. Aroma of roasty malts, oak, wood, vanilla, coconut, cocoa, mocha and espresso. Taste is sweet, oaky and woody with loads of bourbon, vanilla, cocoa, coconut, some espresso and chocolate. Finish is sweet, oaky and woody with some bourbon, vanilla and cocoa. Quite sweet and oaky, pretty generic but balanced bourbon BA IS.

Bottle shared by BelgianBeerGal. Black with an oily sheen and a thin beige head. Chocolatey and a little boozy, but sweet. Nice bourbon flavor with a hint of vanilla.

Bottle from.....somewhere in TX. Dark brown color with a thin briwn head. Aroma is dark fruit and bourbon. Flavor starts with molasses, then some brown sugar and finishes with lingering, warming bourbon. If you like bourbon, you?ll love this. Big and tasty.

750 ml bottle to snifter (2015 vintage; shared with the Mrs.). Looks good; a very slightly translucent very dark (almost black) cola with foamy beige head. Smells good too; dark malt, chocolate, oak, vanilla, and a bit of marshmallow alongside notes of coffee and coconut. Tastes like it smells with a pleasantly bitter full-bodied mouthfeel that’s lightly warming but smooth for the abv. Good stuff.

Bomber shared with friends. We had this at the end of the second evening of tasting, and have little recollection of the tasting notes, but it was a great beer, definitely one I want to try again.

Draft at NC taproom. Pours black with a half inch of khaki foam. Leaves trace lacing in the glass. Big bourbon notes on the nose. Big bourbon on the tongue as well. I like bourbon but I wish I could pick out some other flavors. Hides it's 13% well. Finished clean. Still it's a nice bourbon stout. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

I love the none barrel aged narwhal. This barrel aged version is quite a treat however the price is quite steep considering the cost different between to two. Notes of dark roast coffee, chocolate, vanilla and a warming alcohol flavor on the back end. Really great.
