COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Barrel-Aged Narwhal is our deliciously dark Imperial Stout aged in Kentucky bourbon barrels. Barrel aging is a strange science; it mellows some characteristics of the original beer while intensifying others. Narwhalís aggressive roastiness has calmed, but the rich, chocolate-like malt backbone is brought to the fore. Black as midnight, this intense stout is complex with notes of cocoa and espresso balanced with hints of vanilla and toasted coconut from the oak casks. Nearly as rare as itís nautical namesake, try Barrel-Aged Narwhal while you can because like the creature itself, it will soon dive into the depths and leave nary a trace behind.

Tallahassee, Fl. - Brass Tap - Midtown - on tap. Deep dark brown pour, sticky khaki colored head, decent lacing. Bourbon induced aroma, trace of dates. Bold flavor with some top shelf bourbon, hints of chocolate some licorice, a brief hint of cherry fruitiness. Decently thick mouthfeel. Usual not blown away by BAs - but this on sits right.

Bottle, black and thick, fantastic walnut colored head fades to a skiff. Aroma is bourbon, vanilla, coffee, toffee, molasses, anise, burnt sugar, dried plums, raisin, shoyu, cookies, chocolate, toasted bourbon. Taste is toffee, vanilla, coffee, cookies, anise, plums, raisins and cherries, molases, boubon, oak, toasted barley, faint hops and anise bitter finish. This is a bit boozy and sweet, but nicely complex, super rich. Palate is thick, rich, but not syrupy, carbonation is moderate, but a bit almost too much for style. I was very excited for this. I love narwhal. But this might be too far. Itís definitly too sweet. Itís still a fantastic beer, but itís not gonna make my top ten. Ok, the more I drink this, the more I like it. Had to raise my rating.

Pitch, oily pour, khaki head. Vinous, sherry/port aroma over roast. Sweet, boozy, raisinettes. Pretty smooth, though you know the ABV is there. Itís warming like wine. Chocolate notes in the aftertaste, cake dough at the very end. Sweetness clings a bit too long. On tap, Brass Tap, Tallahassee.

Bottle shared by Michael at the Pig. Pours a very deep brown with small mocha head. The pronounced aroma is dark fruits, deep rich malts, dark chocolate cocoa nibs, roasted nuts, and some coffee. Taste is dark chocolate and coffee first chased by a hint of caramel and vanilla. Thick, medium to full body. Ending is cocoa and marshmallow with a barrel boozeness.

Thanks Bob! Rich black pour with a mocha brown head. Aroma is roasted malt, bourbon, cocoa. Taste is cocoa, bourbon, chalky, light roasted malt, hints of vanilla, and oaky dryness in the finish. It is a different monster than the regular narwhal. I did a side by side after rating in my notebook. BA is so much creamier. Both are fantastic, but the BA is so much tastier and more complex. Great lacing.

Fairly dark color with smattering of khaki head. Smell of roasted malt dominates, some musty oak, bourbon. Taste is a roasty charred hop with coffee, chocolate, cigarette ash. Barrel is pronounced, strong smell, vanilla flavors. Good solid barrel aged stout, does its job well. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

750 ml. Pour is opaque ebony and has an enduring disc of creamy espresso foam on top. Nose of dark chocolate, anise, dark toast, lightly soured figs and red wine. Mouthfeel is silky smooth with low-medium carbonation and a soft, but hefty body. Great balance with no stickiness and just a nice touch of the big abv. Flavors of semi-sweet chocolate, toasted oak, whiskey, vanilla and coffee. There are definitely more complex and flavorful Imperials out there, but this one is well constructed. Dangerously smooth and drinkable for the biggetiness of the abv.
