COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Barrel-Aged Narwhal is our deliciously dark Imperial Stout aged in Kentucky bourbon barrels. Barrel aging is a strange science; it mellows some characteristics of the original beer while intensifying others. Narwhal’s aggressive roastiness has calmed, but the rich, chocolate-like malt backbone is brought to the fore. Black as midnight, this intense stout is complex with notes of cocoa and espresso balanced with hints of vanilla and toasted coconut from the oak casks. Nearly as rare as it’s nautical namesake, try Barrel-Aged Narwhal while you can because like the creature itself, it will soon dive into the depths and leave nary a trace behind.

A dark imperial stout with a thin brown head. In aroma, beautiful sweet chocolate malt with coffee grind, vanilla, bourbon barrel, licorice, burned wood, very nice. In mouth, a nice sweet fruity chocolate malt with cherry blossoms, rhum, vanilla bean, molasses, alcohol warmth, beautiful. Bottle at Thirsty Monk.

On tap poured a clear dark reddish brown with a small lasting brown head. Aromas of bourbon, roastiness, bitter chocolate, coffee and light licorice. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of bitter chocolate, bourbon, roastiness and light coffee with a smooth lingering chocolate bourbon finish.

Keg at Toronado, SD, 12/11/14. Black with a moderate tan swirl and edgework. Nose is rich dark fruits, light charr, bourbon well represented, chocolate, brown sugars. Taste comprises woody BA licks, coconut, Dark Chocolate Bounty Bar, liqourice, spice, rich chocolate, Bourbonics. Medium + body, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Decent BA impy.

Tap at Churchkey for CBC. Inky black pour. Medium tan head. Wispy lacing. Nose is pretty intense black cherry and semisweet chocolate bar. Mild toasted coconut isn’t quite there. Hints of puppy breath. Body is rich, not too dense. Not super silky like the normal version. Moderate bourbon heat, hints of rum cake and coconut. But overall inferior to normal Narwhal. In the finish some sharper alcohol heat. Still a dessert beer to pair with mousse and chocolate cake.

My Bottom Line:
This very warming Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout juxtaposes bourbon, vanilla and wood atop lingering dark cocoa.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam sits atop the darkness.
-Barrel sure is assertive in this one ; a bit too much so for me.
-Mouthfeel is not too heavy, making this more drinkable than a Bourbon County Stout, for example.
-Black bean allusions are made as well.

Bottle.

Bottle share. It pours with a murky dark mahogany body that supports a weak tan head. The aroma offers up smooth slick sweetness in the form of candy like bourbon booze and sugary sweet malts and then the sweetness intercedes among the dark roasted malts notes and chocolate. Very nice. The taste is smooth and sweet and nectar like with slick bourbon sweetness mixing with sweet malts, a molasses and vanilla sensation. Behind those notes are murmurs of spicy oak, dark roasted malts and dark roasted coffee and then a pleasing and firm chocolate yumminess. Wow, this all comes together very nicely. Solid!

Draft. Black beer with a tan head. Chooclate and light bourbon aroma with light dark malts. Chocolate and bourbon flavor with light brown sugar. Medium bodied. Chocolate and brown sugar linfer with bourbon.
