Narwhal Imperial Stout is the latest beer in Sierra Nevada’s High Altitude Series. This malt-forward monster is bold – with notes of baker’s cocoa, molasses, and dark roasted coffee. This massive imperial stout is incredibly complex, rich, and intense and will develop in the bottle for years to come.

This imperial stout is a real and complex one of a kind! Pitch black and mounted by a nice pale beige head, the beer’s aromas are nose-filling: malt, roated malt, coffee and chocolate. Pretty common nose for an imperial stout. I get some alcohol and a bit of whiskey as well. Just by making the beer dancing in the glass, you expect a medium to full body from the beer. The taste brings back the aromas described above so no need to say again, but the mouthfeel has a fine acidity that cuts right in the middle of the tongue making the beer almost sparkling on the palate, and this has nothing to do with the beer’s carbonation wich is average. Very good and interresting beer!

oil-black with a medium-light-brown head, fine/creamy carbonation of an inch that sticks around as a film (slow rate of decay.) Aroma is chocolate, touch of soy sauce, lemon-grass with hint of lavender, some sap, touch of caramel. Body is medium-heavy, syrupy and a bit oily with moderate carbonation, medium-fine coarseness, soft feel with very little burn. Flavor is a touch smoky light caramel sweetness with light chocolate, a touch of woody pine, light bitterness in the finish. Toasted marshmallow. A delicious imperial stout given that it has not been barrel ages - you can tell they worked a while bringing out interesting yet balanced flavors. I particularly like the smoky/woody/caramel notes in the flavor - that is grand!!

Real dark and rich imperial stout with a coffee taste. Not metallic, very smooth. Perfect for those cold winter nights by the fire. Subtle tasting, not overwhelming. Really nice. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

UPDATED: DEC 10, 2015 12 oz 2012 bottle. Unlike most people, I’ve had the barrel aged version of this prior to trying the regular version which, as you can infer, I’ve cellared for a good while. Well, I’m happy to find that this regular RIS is exceptional if not quite as tasty as the barrel aged version. It certainly looks great: opaque black with a durable light brown head and lovely lacing. The high ABV is evident in the nose and feel but otherwise fairly well hidden. Plenty of dark roasted grain flavor with minimal char and very light smoke -- just right IMO. Excellent bitter-sweet balance and mix. Feel: Full but not quite thick body. Near medium, soft carbonation. O: Excellent. I haven’t tried a fresh sample yet but I’d bet waiting until this is about 2 years old is a wise move. (rating confirmed in June 2015 with an now older bottle.)

Pours murky black color with tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, cocoa, raisins, and coffee. Big roasted malt flavor with bakers cocoa, dark roast coffee. Lots of dark roasty flavors. Some dark dried fruit flavors in the middle and finishing with a coffee and bakers cocoa bitterness. Some booziness. Really nice.
