Narwhal Imperial Stout is the latest beer in Sierra Nevada’s High Altitude Series. This malt-forward monster is bold – with notes of baker’s cocoa, molasses, and dark roasted coffee. This massive imperial stout is incredibly complex, rich, and intense and will develop in the bottle for years to come.

Style: Imperial Stout
Hops: Magnum, Challenger
Malts: Two Row Pale, Chocolate, Honey, Carafa, Roasted Barley

Availability: 12 oz bottles, Draft

I was surprised by a lack of head, the big bitterness up front, the lovely malt middle and then the dry finish. I also picked out some fruits in this. I may have been making that up though. Not spectacular enough for me to do a virtual high five with you, but I’d tip my glass in your direction.

After a few beers that weren’t what I was expecting I decided to crack open a bottle of Sierra Nevada’s Narwhal Imperial Stout. Clocking in at 10.2%, I’ve heard good things about this beer but it sold out last year. This year I acted fast and secured a bottle as soon as I saw it. A thick viscous black pour with a thin burnt orange head that quickly vanished. The aroma is umami, soy, soft cocoa that reminds me a bit of the Stone Smoked Porter. Full-bodied, slick mouthfeel this sucker is thick! Savoury notes up front, then roastiness followed by the alcohol burning down your throat & ending with bitter chocolate & coffee in the aftertaste. This is a really savoury beer, meaty, complex chocolate, roast notes and some dark bitter chocolate too.

Bottle at a homebrew meeting. Pours super dark with a thick creamy tan head. Nose of roasted malts. Tastes like it smells. Awesome.

Super bowl at Will’s. This was very good, thick and black, hint of vanilla and espresso on the nose. More espresso and milk chocolate, smooth. Overall well done, if a bit nondescript.

2013 bottle, poured into a sierra nevada small goblet, pours a rich baltic black, the head seems to rise out of no where, and conjurs to a thin rim round the glass with spotty lacing. Aroma is dry cocoa, dark coffee, baking chocolate, and a malt haven. Taste is very malt forwand, sweet coca, bold coffee, thick molasses, chocolate syrup, rasins, and slight figs. Mouth feel is dry, bitter, then a sweet aftertaste with the abv warming it up nicely. A full, rich, deep and satisfying brew here, glad i picked this one up.
