Narwhal Imperial Stout is the latest beer in Sierra Nevada’s High Altitude Series. This malt-forward monster is bold – with notes of baker’s cocoa, molasses, and dark roasted coffee. This massive imperial stout is incredibly complex, rich, and intense and will develop in the bottle for years to come.

Style: Imperial Stout
Hops: Magnum, Challenger

With grateful thanks to my learned off-sider, Bartlett. There’s just something about the bigger beers that I just fall for hook, line and sinker. This one is a good exemplar of Imperial Russian Stout with its inky body, coffee coloured head and aromas of Chocolate, cocoa nibs, coffee, licorice and dark oak. In the silky, oily body there were flavours of the same with caramel roastiness and a definite savoury licorice note. It sat on the palate and developed slowly, alternating between sweet, vegetal, savoury, bitter, sweet again and moreish. It was difficult to imagine anything I didn’t like about this beer.

Birra magnifica.

Bottle originally from Bitter Virtue, Southampton. Black as any beer I’ve ever seen. Not a lot of carbonation and what there is dissipates quickly. Aroma of chocolate and pine resin. Wow, very hoppy for an imply stout and absolute heaven on the nose. Taste is sweet with a bitter finish, more hoppy - almost floral - flavours coming through along with the normal chocolate/coffee/liquorice flavours so common in strong stouts. This is a masterpiece.

Pours a dark, dark black with a bubbly dark brown head that leaves quickly. Aroma of coffee, malt and plum. Big dark chocolate and coffee taste, along with touches of malt and alcohol. Mouth is thick, but incredibly smooth. This is a very nice stout.

UPDATED: OCT 14, 2014 Bottle 2013. After 1 year cellaring, this beer’s coffee and chocolate characteristics are amplified. Any sort of sweetness is very subdued and it leaves a nice bitter chocolate palate. We’ll see what 3 years does to the next one. Highly recommend aging this because even after a year, the beer has become more enjoyable.

355ml bottle from Appellation Wines, cheers Ash! Pours jet black, thick brown head. Massive dark chocolate nose, creamy and inviting. Another big snort brings coffee, more rich chocolate. Taste is heavy and sweet, with some herbal hops and liquorice. Long dark chocolate sweet finish. Nice.
