Narwhal Imperial Stout is the latest beer in Sierra Nevada’s High Altitude Series. This malt-forward monster is bold – with notes of baker’s cocoa, molasses, and dark roasted coffee. This massive imperial stout is incredibly complex, rich, and intense and will develop in the bottle for years to come.

Style: Imperial Stout
Hops: Magnum, Challenger
Malts: Two Row Pale, Chocolate, Honey, Carafa, Roasted Barley

Availability: 12 oz bottles, Draft
Arrival: October, 2012

UPDATED: AUG 28, 2013 4-pack of 12 oz bottles for 10 bucks. Pours jet black with a brown head. Looks nice. Alcohol is readily apparently in the aroma, overpowering the chocolate and coffee underneath. Taste chocolate, malt up front and a lingering bitterness on the back end. The alcohol is definitely there as well. Texture is thick and pretty oily, average carbonation. I wanted to like it more but the alcohol is too present in this beer to be a truly great imperial stout to me. They get a couple extra points for doing something different though.

Pours a menacing, viscous black crowned by a large, dark-tanned, creamy looking head. Smells of leather and tar. Vinous with hints of alcohol, coffee and bitter chocolate. Taste is similar, full bodied with soft carbonation.

Bottle at home in Salisbury, CT - picked up about six months ago in NH. Pours thick, dark brown-black, somewhat oily with a large, deep beige head. The aroma gives off burnt malts, dark chocolate, hefty roasted malts. Medium to big sweet flavor with liquidy dark sugars, baking cocoa, bitter earth, burnt wood, some molasses, mild raisin and raspberry. Full bodied with fine to average carbonation. Sweet, lightly warming finish with bittersweet cocoa, general dark chocolate, dry chocolate cake, dirt, lightly torched wood. Pretty robust overall.

Black colour with small head. Aroma of bitter chocolate, coffee, roasted malts, very strong aroma. Very, very undiluted and oily, alcoholic with coffee-like bitterness, tinge is like fresh oak wood, malt, biscuit, maybe a touch of vanilla and some fruitness. This beer has something nice for every tastebud on your tongue. Great stuff!

Pitch black with a nice dark tan head. Aroma of roast, dark caramel, sherri, dark red fruit, coffee, chocolate. Taste of lots of roast, alcohol, ash, coffee, bitter chocolate. Carbonation a bit high, but still a very full mouth feel. Palate dry, roasty, and warming.

Narwhal is another example of an overall comment I have of the entire Sierra Nevada portfolio of beers: Technically clean, but lacks depth of flavor. Sierra is the sixth largest brewery in the U.S. and its mass production level prevents it from delivering exceptional beers in any category. We owe Sierra a thanks for pioneering the craft beer business, but unfortunately, its beers have become more macro than micro.

Bottle from CBC Brixton. Pours a dense black/brown with a tan head. Aroma is a bit of veg, choc, espresso, touch of leathery peat whisky. Full bodied and foamy. Big coffee, licorice, choc, rum, a bit smokey, boozy. Very nice.
