Narwhal Imperial Stout is the latest beer in Sierra Nevada’s High Altitude Series. This malt-forward monster is bold – with notes of baker’s cocoa, molasses, and dark roasted coffee. This massive imperial stout is incredibly complex, rich, and intense and will develop in the bottle for years to come.

Style: Imperial Stout
Hops: Magnum, Challenger
Malts: Two Row Pale, Chocolate, Honey, Carafa, Roasted Barley

Availability: 12 oz bottles, Draft
Arrival: October, 2012

For what it is, it’s fantastic. But even though I like dark beers, this one is just too dark. Aroma is pungent, strong, piercing. Appearance is blacker than pitch - this is something you pave roads with; head is khaki-coloured. No light shines through this thing - this is pure pitch darkness. Taste is overwhelmingly powerful, a full-assault on the senses. A tiny sweetness tries to sneak through the ridiculously roasted malt flavor. Lots of coffee, chocolate, bit of ash. This is heavy, heavy stuff. At colder temperatures, it’s palatable, and not even bad, despite the fact that I’m a dry stout guy, not an imperial stout one. For what it is, it’s grand...just too much for me.

Appearance: Black with cm thick tan head. Aroma: Liquorice, treacle, spiritous, slight aniseed and floral. Taste: Medium bitterness and sweetness, low/medium sourness. Palate: Thick smooth texture, medium body, low carbonation, lingering liquorice, aniseed, bitter sweet spiritous finish, with a final net of sourness. Comments: Tasty and glass lace. Dark brown/borderline black pour with a small mocha head. Aroma of dark chocolate, espresso, raisins, honey and roasted barley. Taste is heavy on the sweet side and medium to low in bitterness. Smooth carbonation and long chocolaty aftertaste.

Thick black brown no reaction to light with a creamy tan head. Scents of raw dark chocolate. Great bitter chocolate taste with a light creaminess. Dark that fades to a little bourbon bitterness. Good Strong Dark.

Bottle. 2013 bottle. Better Beer Of The Month Club. Black with a frothy light brown head. Roasty aroma with coffee liqueur, a bit of alcohol and a bit of cocoa notes. Bittersweet flavor, roasty, with espresso, dark chocolate, liqueur notes and a bitter finish, roasty and hoppy. Rounded-mouthfeel. Very good.

12oz bottle poured into a tulip glass. Opaque black with a big, thick, mouse-like flavorful (and alcoholic!) mocha head. Nose is loaded with dark chocolate, coffee, roasted malts, brown sugar and carobs. Some hop earthiness and faint ash. Rich chocolate flavor, creamed coffee liquor, heavy roast, malt sweetness and medium bitterness. Faint tartness. Full body, perfect soft carbonation, a bit too alcoholic, quite heavy but complex. Cool.

Pours motor oil black and thick with a cappuccino head. Aroma is roasted barley, cocoa nibs, chocolate, slight licorice, some dark fruit sweetness, and a huge malt molasses note. Taste is bitter chocolate, thick syrupy malt, molasses, vanilla, some booze, roasting coffee beans, bready, some burnt caramel. Huge flavor, a bit thinner on my tongue than some others of the style, but perhaps makes it more drinkable. Overall a great beer, love what they did with this one.

A: raisin, licorice and malt. Ap: used motor oil pour with a thin dark khaki head. T: very intense taste. Medium sweetness, slightly bitter. Alcohol prevalent. P: is a little thin for the style. O: a good beer but a few draw backs in some areas lets this one slip a little.

Bottle at home from drinkstore
Very dark brown with dark tan lacing. Rich roast barley and sweet cocoa. Full bodied, light carbonation, sweet, rich malt, dry toast, touch of lactose perhaps. Dry roasty malt, fairly abrupt, boozy but still light in the mouth. Rich but one dimensional
