Narwhal Imperial Stout is the latest beer in Sierra Nevada’s High Altitude Series. This malt-forward monster is bold – with notes of baker’s cocoa, molasses, and dark roasted coffee. This massive imperial stout is incredibly complex, rich, and intense and will develop in the bottle for years to come.

Arrival: October, 2012

Bottle from Great Grog. This inky black beer pours with a quickly disappearing tan head. Flavours of chocolate and liquorice dominate with currants and red fruit followed by roasted coffee on the finish.

12 oz. Pours an opaque ebony with a small disc of cream on top. Aroma is espresso, green herb, char and dark bittersweet chocolate. Tastes of the same mix plus some orange zest. Bit of a harsh finish with too much roast, abv and hop is a minor detraction. Heavy body is smoothly carbonated, to the bitter side and has a nice tongue tingle. I get the "richness and intensity" but maybe this needs some aging to develop the advertised complexity.

Black of color with a brown head. An aroma of roasted malt, coffee, liqurice and almost burnt. A flavor of roasted malt, coffee, liqurice, weak sweets and bitter.

Very dark with tan head. Aroma of cocoa and roasted goodness. Immediate flavor is dark chocolate, syrup, and roasted coffee. Some booziness comes through in the flavor and is definitely warming on the way down. Full bodied. Tasty beer for cool fall nights. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

UPDATED: AUG 28, 2013 4-pack of 12 oz bottles for 10 bucks. Pours jet black with a brown head. Looks nice. Alcohol is readily apparently in the aroma, overpowering the chocolate and coffee underneath. Taste chocolate, malt up front and a lingering bitterness on the back end. The alcohol is definitely there as well. Texture is thick and pretty oily, average carbonation. I wanted to like it more but the alcohol is too present in this beer to be a truly great imperial stout to me. They get a couple extra points for doing something different though.

Pours a menacing, viscous black crowned by a large, dark-tanned, creamy looking head. Smells of leather and tar. Vinous with hints of alcohol, coffee and bitter chocolate. Taste is similar, full bodied with soft carbonation.

Bottle at home in Salisbury, CT - picked up about six months ago in NH. Pours thick, dark brown-black, somewhat oily with a large, deep beige head. The aroma gives off burnt malts, dark chocolate, hefty roasted malts. Medium to big sweet flavor with liquidy dark sugars, baking cocoa, bitter earth, burnt wood, some molasses, mild raisin and raspberry. Full bodied with fine to average carbonation. Sweet, lightly warming finish with bittersweet cocoa, general dark chocolate, dry chocolate cake, dirt, lightly torched wood. Pretty robust overall.
