4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
This beast is jet black, inky black. Dark tan head. Aroma is cocoa, licorice, coffe, roasted malts, and some ETOH. Thick, creamy, full mouthfeel. Taste is strong malts, mild bitterness. A beast of a stout, I like it.

4.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 20/20
UPDATED: MAY 22, 2016 Opaque, stark black color, tall, frothy and lasting tan head.
Attractive, moderate nose with the aroma of fresh coffee.
Introduced by an obvious alcoholic burn and taste, full body and moderately intense roast and alcohol flavor, creamy and dense mouthfeel (like nitro) but surprizingly lean body after the dense mousse extinguishes itself, good length, intense, tasty, rich and fruity finish, excellent balance.
Predominantly but not aggressive roast bitterness, which, along with perfectly measured high acidity disguises abundant sweetness, reaching perfect bittersweetsour balance.
Complex flavor profile, alcoholic, coffee liqueur flavor, molasses, tar, dried fruit, oak, vanilla essence, cola, barley drops, English plum pudding or mincemeat, bready.
Excellent, rich but not cloying stout, easy to like, perhaps the go-to rich stout, even if not the most extreme.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
Poured from bottle at Monks Kaffee in Dubuque Iowa. Black with flat head. Light coffee aroma. The taste is hard to describe - a ton going on in this one. A slight fruity cherry taste wrapped around a malty cocoa oily creamy and coffee monster. A pile of. happiness. The high ABV is well hidden. Really good beer. Best Sierra Nevada I've had

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
This has a nice sweet and toasty, beguiling aroma that hides the bite the flavor has. It's only a bit hot but still pretty tasty with some malty and hoppy goodness. It's nice and smooth on the tongue too.

4.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Aroma contains dark fruits and is vineous and a bit alcoholic. There is some burnt wood but otherwise the aroma is more that of a barley wine than an imperial stout. Strange enough I can actually notice sand in the aroma
Pitch black with thick beige head
A bit sweet with some almond in the taste. There is a pretty intense dark chocolate presence in the taste. Even if the the taste begins a bit sweet the bitterness wins the tug o’ war. The finishing bitterness is really intense and is the typical dark chocolate bitterness.
Full body, creamy and also a bit oily texture
This one is relly fantastic, I was bit sceptic judgin by teh aroma but the taste is fantastic

Ebony pour, good biscuit head. Espresso, vanilla, chocolate, caramel from the roasted malt, molasses, leather, peat. Earthy, full bodied and decadent. Slight bitterness towards the end. Great stuff.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Black colour with tan head. Toasted malt, licorice and black currant in aroma. Flavour is really complex. Toasted malt, black currant, licorice, dark fruits. Body is medium with a somewhat dry mouthfeel, for the style. Medium bitterness, a lot of it coming from the toasted malts. Long finish. This is a delicate Imperial Stout, not as sweet and heavy as many. Great beer!

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
2012 Bottle: lots of herby and grassy hop aromas, toasted and chocolate malts. No head at all, I think due to the age, pitch black. Lots of bitterness backing up the chocolate malt flavours, strong dark chocolate. Bitterness lingers, sweet boozy flavours as well. Drinkable imperial stout, lacking the depth of some others, but really approachable, loads of chocolate flavour.

Unassuming testament to longevity in the industry. Not every brewer can make a beer like the Narwhal. It takes know-how and practice to develop a beer with this much complexity and at the same time hide the high abv with a finish like velvet. Excellent

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Best imperial stout I've had. Not sickeningly sweet, great hop balance, full palate, still refreshing. Obvious overt cocoa, molasses, and even sour citrus. Maybe just a tad too bitter. Great.
