Narwhal Imperial Stout is the latest beer in Sierra Nevada’s High Altitude Series. This malt-forward monster is bold – with notes of baker’s cocoa, molasses, and dark roasted coffee. This massive imperial stout is incredibly complex, rich, and intense and will develop in the bottle for years to come.

Pitch black. Big brown head that quickly disappears. Aroma and taste of roasted malt and bread. A bit sweet. Medium body.

From notes: Poured opaque, inky black with a small, thin caramel-colored head that was gone quickly. Aroma mixes notes of bitter chocolate and roasty coffee. Full body, moderately thick with an oily note that lingers in the finish. Flavor of dark, roasty coffee that gives way to a note of lightly bitter chocolate. The coffee becomes more pronounced as it warms. Very good.

Pours dark brown black with almost no head. A rim is tan in color and there are some finely-bubbled legs. The mild aroma is coffee and molasses. Taste is creamy sweet cocoa into molasses and roast coffee. The finish is burnt malt into a mild but distinctive hop bitterness. Some sense of the ABV but it is warming and subtle. There are notes of dry bakers chocolate as well. This is not as in your face and flavor-forward as some other top ImpS, but it has depth, balance and real drinkability. I enjoyed the hoppy finish which nicely balances the sweet malts. Excellent. Is there such a thing as a sessionable Imperial Stout? ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

33 cl bottle. Pours pitch black with small head. Roasted malts, coffee and chocolate in aroma. Similar notes in taste, with an unpleasant subtle flavor of ethanol. Oily and acidic mouthfeel with long, bitter finish. Nice, but not the best Imp S. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

@ Havregatan. Flaska från Systembolaget (39:-). Rostad doft, vanilj. Rostad (nästan bränd) smak, mycket salmiak, kaffe, viss sötma, alkohol. Fyllig, oljig i konsistensen, bra beska, torr, lång avslutning.

Thick and mouthy. Pours black with a soft amber head. Aroma in chocolate and roasted malt. Taste is heavy on roasted malt, coffee and fishes with a smooth bitterness.

355 mL bottle - 2013 versio. Pours just about as black as brown can be, though there is virtually no head. The aroma has a lot of chocolate, but there is also anise and a little roast and honey in there. The beer tastes very fresh - I can almost smell it brewing as I taste it. Lots of green hops in there for an IS. Roast, cocoa, a little coffee grounds, chocolate covered cherries - all of these things fighting to make their presence felt, but only barely succeeding.
