4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
UPDATED: FEB 7, 2014 This beer was a very pleasant surprise. I found it while perusing the offerings at my local grocery and found a stout I wasn’t familiar with. A quick check on ratebeer, and I took a 4-pack with me. I wasn’t disappointed.
Pours black with a full tan head. The aroma is full and wonderful. The flavor is even better, if that is possible. Rich and chocolatey and sweet and a little bit bitter. This is a full-flavored sipping beer that is perfect for an evening as the temperatures are getting cooler. I shared the first two with friends, drank one more tonight, and have one left. This is a beer I’d love to find again. The spot on the shelf was empty yesterday, so others have apparently noticed, too.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Very dark color with half a finger of tan head. Smells of coffee, alcohol, chocolate, anise, grape. Thick taste with some charred bitter at first with some roasted coffee, then some chocolate, some more hop bitter and a little spice and considerable heat. The hop is a little more present than the malt, but still has a big malt profile. Maybe some caramel and vanilla notes as well. But a lot of char and roastiness, pretty good overall.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle poured into a Pint glass Pours jet black, completely opaque. Three finger thick brown head that dissipates within a minute or two, leaving behind minimal lacing. Intensely malty aroma, smells of dark chocolate. Pleasant taste that doesn’t overwhelm; milk chocolate, coffee, and a hint of alcohol at the end with just a hint of warming. Thick creamy mouthfeel, full bodied, froths a bit as you swish it around. Minimal carbonation, and the lacing that does appear quickly slides back into the liquid. A good sipper, in a blind tasting I would have guessed this to be a standard stout, not an imperial. Smooth, delicious, reasonably priced, but not outstanding in any way. A solid beer overall.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Almost jet black pour with sizable brown head. It’s an amazing looking imperial stout. Big notes of dark chocolate and coffee on the nose, a huge malt bomb. Taste is everything I want in an imperial stout, more of the baker’s cocoa and coffee, slight alcohol esters. Super creamy mouthfeel and drinks incredibly easily for 10.2 ABV. This is easily one of Sierra Nevada’s best offerings and a top notch imperial stout, I would love to try a barrel aged version of this. Cheers.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
The aroma is dark chocolate, licorice, chalk. The appearance is a lovely jet black, deep tan head. The flavor is dark chocolate, molasses, licorice. The finish is sweet, chalky, pine, roast. Thick in body, oily. Nicely done. Sierra Nevada is the quiet performer, always turning out quality beer.

Inky, with a big tan head. Great tap handle. Tangy, licorice, slight astringency. Overall the beer has an unfinished edge to it, but it’s still very drinkable. Medium body. On tap, Whole Foods.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Tallahassee, Fl - Whole Foods - on tap. Dark black, licorice-like pour with a thick mocha colored head. Aroma has some dirty feet accents, a touch of creosote. Full-bodied flavor with nice bittersweet baker’s chocolate accents, some creosote, a back end of licorice. Thick, sticky mouthfeel. Can’t get the image of the Narwhal on Elf out of my head - "Bye, Buddy. Hope you find your dad."

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
12 oz. bottle. It pours a dark brown color with a small brown head. The aroma is dark chocolate heavy with some minor notes of coffee and honey sweetness. Maybe a touch of herbal, floral hops. The flavor is nicely roasted with more dark chocolate, honey, coffee with a mildly bitter, chocolaty finish. Very nice imperial stout that gets higher marks because of the awesome value.
