Narwhal Imperial Stout is the latest beer in Sierra Nevada’s High Altitude Series. This malt-forward monster is bold – with notes of baker’s cocoa, molasses, and dark roasted coffee. This massive imperial stout is incredibly complex, rich, and intense and will develop in the bottle for years to come.

Style: Imperial Stout
Hops: Magnum, Challenger
Malts: Two Row Pale, Chocolate, Honey, Carafa, Roasted Barley

UPDATED: SEP 21, 2013 Aroma of dark fruit, coaco, brown sugar, caramel. Pours jet black, caramel colored head. Medium/heavy body. Lots of chocolate, roastiness, more brown sugar. Nice balance of bitterness. This is one of my favorite imperial stouts.

This is exactly what I imagine a perfect imperial stout is like. Creamy, sexy, notes of black plum and dark, dark chocolate. Rotting fruit and heavy cocoa. The head was fairly thick and caramel colored. I love the aftertaste (like chocolate aftertaste), and I highly enjoy that pouring this brew from a bottle was just as delicious as a good tap. Can’t wait to try it from the tap, though.

Black pour with a tall, creamy, mocha brown head that has great retention. Aroma is full of chocolate and coffee, some dusty grain, roast, floral and fruit notes and light smokiness. Flavor is big, big chocolate and coffee up front, followed by dark caramel, burnt sugar, roast, light smoke, chocolate syrup, hints of sweet bread spice and a little licorice to the finish. Heavy body, creamy, slightly syrupy feel throughout until the slightly more dry, slightly chalky and oddly a little slimy finish almost like it has oats. Great stuff overall, delicious and complex, but approachable imperial stout, like Old Rasputin, or Expedition.

Strong cocoa aromas. Pours deep black with a thin brown head. Strong malty flavors with a bit of sugary sweetness at the end to balance the bitter coffee notes.

UPDATED: DEC 2, 2013 Pours black with medium, frothy tan head. Aroma of coffee, chocolate, hints of dates and burnt sugar. Taste is creamy chocolate sweet at first followed by a huge coffee bitter that rounds off with a licorice and molasses finish. Body is rich and creamy with soft carbonation.

Opaque black - brown beer, tidy tan head. Palate is slightly viscous and dry. Rich malt, licorice and aniseed. Touch of coffee. Trace of tangy dark fruits. Some roast bitterness. Dry finish, Unremittingly dark and dry. Tasty but hardly the world class beer some would have you believe.

Type: 12-oz. bottle Glass: ½ pint glass From: VONS in Big Bear City, Calif. Price: $9.99 for a 4-pack w/ VONS membership card Purchased: Sept. 13, 2013 Consumed: Sept. 13, 2013 Misc.: 2013 batch Poured a pitch black color with 1-to-2 fingers of almost still tan head, that dissipated rather quickly. Even a bit purple in the color there. Some sporadic spots of lacing, but well below average. Minimal retention on the top on the way down. Smelled a deep liquor up front, like an Irish whiskey or something similar. Also molasses, dark cocoa, maple syrup, toffee, caramel and rum. Could smell the strong alcohol for sure. Tasted dark cocoa, cocoa, chocolate milk, molasses, toffee, caramel, Irish Whiskey and rum. So basically like the smell, but smoother. Alcohol was well hidden, unlike the smell. Medium-to-full body. Creamy-to-sticky texture. Soft carbonation. Long, smooth finish. I was slightly disappointed in the Narwhal. Whether you consider it a Russian Imperial Stout (Beer Advocate), an Imperial Stout (Sierra Nevada and Rate Beer), neither lived up to what I was expecting.

A very rich stout with a strong flavor of cocoa and a little coffee. Has a sharp, somewhat bitter finish.

From a bottle on the JMT. Pours very dark brown with a creamy tan head. Really good beer. Chocolate, molasses, smokey flavor. Low/medium body and carbonation.

Black pour with a brown head. Aroma is roasted malt, little hops and coffee. Taste is roasted malt, cocoa, dry, little bitter in the finish. So-so lacing. A very tasty beer that I am glad to see in my area.
