Narwhal Imperial Stout is the latest beer in Sierra Nevada’s High Altitude Series. This malt-forward monster is bold – with notes of baker’s cocoa, molasses, and dark roasted coffee. This massive imperial stout is incredibly complex, rich, and intense and will develop in the bottle for years to come.

Appearance: 4/5Pours a silky, solid black. No hint of light shines through. A dark brown head slowly bubbles to the top before it dissipates to a small covering. Then persists ever so slightly throughout consumption.Smell: 5/5Immediate blast of dark, roasted chocolate. Smells like winter time with a nice dark chocolate candy bar. Roasted, slight hints of coffee, major chocolate notes. Little to no boozy smell, really a great smell. Wish they sold yankee candles with this smell. Just a hint of citrus bring some great balance. Hard to pick up, but slowly builds.Taste: 5/5Doesn?t disappoint. Again, major roasty chocolate flavor, slight undertone of roasted coffee but doesn?t pack a major coffee flavor until the very second you think the flavor has dissipated from your mouth, then the coffee hits you all at once. It?s fantastic. Dark roasted malt coats your mouth, with a slight sweetness, balanced well by the bitter. A big stout, puts hair on your chest. The coffee breath when it fades is great.Mouthfeel: 5/5Carbonation dances on your tongue despite the expectation of weight. Coats your mouth with bitter at first, which open you to the full body flavor. Quickly washes away, to give you a lingering tingle. Bold, not too heavy.Overall: 4.8/5One of the best Imperial Stouts I?ve had. Great balance, not too boozy nor too light. Imperial chocolate with hints of coffee, a great roast, but not so big you can only drink one.

I find the body a bit watery for my liking. Everything else is spot on. Big roasted notes, heavy espresso, dulcet tones of vanilla and a touch of anise. Smooth, rich but not overtly boisterous. Delicate but big and warming.

Pours a rich black from 12oz bottle into the glass. He head is dark brown at about two fingers. The aroma is rich in caramel and chocolate forward malt. Smooth roasted coffee and dried fig follow up the heaps of chocolate and caramel. On the tasting I get rich dark chocolate with a caramel core. A long dry coffee finish is pleasantly bitter and robust adding to the full body and creamy/oily mouthfeel. The 10.2% ABV is covered up expertly. Almost Russian Imperial Stout territory.

Svart med ett stort gulgrått skum. Rostade smaker med lite kaffe. En bra balanserad Stout som känns stiltypisk. Snyggt fast inget extra som lyfter. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Picked up a single 12-oz bottle at Heritage Liquors in Maplewood, Minnesota. Pours an opaque dark brown colored brew with a tan head that slowly dissipates and leaves behind some spotty lacing. Aroma of chocolate, a hint of black licorice and some coffee. Taste is full bodied, flavors include toasted dark malts, Baker’s chocolate, vanilla and some leatherl. Finish is quite smooth with a chocolate and black licorice aftertaste with some vanilla and a hint of molasses.

355ml bottle, packaged 081715. Pitch black with two finger brown head leaving moderate lacing. Aroma is chocolate, milky coffee, some signs of oxidation, molasses and black bread. Taste also shows early signs of port like oxidation, chocolate, coffee, black bread, light passing liqorice and growing bitterness not unlike a high cocoa percentage chocolate with orange zest. Smooth yet filling mouthfeel with warming alcohol, light carbonation and mild roasted coffee and cocoa aftertaste.

Bottle: Pours a near opaque with a thing tan head. Roasted aroma. Some chocolatey and toasted coconut notes. Soft oak in the background. Pretty fluffy texture; less slick than other Imperial Stouts. Flavor is a bit one dimensional. Some cocoa and roast, with an inky finish. Some dull oak notes.

Tastes very resinous- i.e. woody, black licorice, heavy malts. Has faint traces of walnut, oats, and whispers of baker’s cocoa and roasted coffee. Very impressive for a Stout. Best enjoyed in a chilled chalice glass (different than the Belgian Tulip glass). Toffee or Kettlecorn make good food pairings

Dark brown/black color. Roasted malt, cacao, chocolate, coffee aromas. Sweet taste of chocolate, vanilla, coffee and molasses. Long, heavy finish with sweet flavors lingering.
