4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Appearance: 4/5Pours a silky, solid black. No hint of light shines through. A dark brown head slowly bubbles to the top before it dissipates to a small covering. Then persists ever so slightly throughout consumption.Smell: 5/5Immediate blast of dark, roasted chocolate. Smells like winter time with a nice dark chocolate candy bar. Roasted, slight hints of coffee, major chocolate notes. Little to no boozy smell, really a great smell. Wish they sold yankee candles with this smell. Just a hint of citrus bring some great balance. Hard to pick up, but slowly builds.Taste: 5/5Doesn?t disappoint. Again, major roasty chocolate flavor, slight undertone of roasted coffee but doesn?t pack a major coffee flavor until the very second you think the flavor has dissipated from your mouth, then the coffee hits you all at once. It?s fantastic. Dark roasted malt coats your mouth, with a slight sweetness, balanced well by the bitter. A big stout, puts hair on your chest. The coffee breath when it fades is great.Mouthfeel: 5/5Carbonation dances on your tongue despite the expectation of weight. Coats your mouth with bitter at first, which open you to the full body flavor. Quickly washes away, to give you a lingering tingle. Bold, not too heavy.Overall: 4.8/5One of the best Imperial Stouts I?ve had. Great balance, not too boozy nor too light. Imperial chocolate with hints of coffee, a great roast, but not so big you can only drink one.

4.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
Packaged on 11/3/15, my bottles of Narwhal are still pretty fresh. While I’ve decided to write my review and record my notes after the initial tasting, I’m planning to age the other two and update my notes as needed. If I can be allowed to milk the nautical theme, Narwhal pours black as the deepest sea with tan colored foam on the surface. Aroma propels cocoa, bold coffee, booze. Flavor is bettersweet, roasty, and complex. Feel is full and dry. Even Sierra Nevada’s malt-forward beers tend to be aggressive. With 60 IBU’s, I thought Narwhal might be like that too. Surprisingly, it’s more rich than bitter, even in its freshest state. I’m looking forward to seeing how this will change.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
12oz bottle poured into a snifter. There’s a slight acetone aroma initially, but this fades, and is replaced by cocoa, coffee, raisin, and sweet bourbon caramel with a light, faint hint of wood. It pours jet black with a viscosity to the pout and topped by a brown, frothy head that has moderate retention and leaves a light, messy lace. The taste is a high bitter cut by a medium high sweetness that strengthens late to balance it out. The beer is thick and creamy with a soft foamy carbonation and a full body that’s woody with dark chocolate and raisin notes and turns smokey with caramel and resin before finishing with a smokey pine and roasted character with a sharp bourbon warmth that ducks away quickly and turns to dark chocolate raisins. The aftertaste is smokey wood, caramel and chocolate nuts with a mild lingering quality.

4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours an opaque black with with a small brown ring that leaves sticky lace on the glass. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, dark cocoa, molasses, touch of alcohol and coffee. Taste is a complex blend of sweet dark chocolate, coffee, bitter roasted malts, alcohol and some sweet molasses on the finish... Great imperial stout that doesn’t seem as big as its abv.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
12oz bottle. 2015 vintage. Appearance: Black and opaque with a khaki brown foam cap that lingers a bit.
Aroma: Light roasted coffee with some raisin and cherry notes. Somewhat subdued.
Taste: Deep, rich malt sweetness with a strong roasted edge. Some dark fruit and sherry notes intertwine, with noticeable bitterness accentuated by slightly astringent roast.
Mouthfeel: Medium with some viscosity and a light to moderate carbonation. Touch of alcohol warmth.
Finish: Slightly slick on the tongue, with a touch of dark fruit and a strong lingering roast.
Overall: You can tell this is a fresh version, with a strong roast component dominating the overall profile of this beer. Aroma is maybe a little subdued to some other imperial stouts, but overall very good. Over time I’m sure this will improve as the roasted edge softens into some fruitier flavors.
